Re: Teacher/Student ratio in Nursery school....

I'm not sure what the "recommended" ratio is.

But I know that in Bella's class there are at least 10 kids (it's different each day). 1 teacher and either 1 or 2 aids helping every day.

I don't have any info., but mine has 12-13 kids, 1 teacher, and 2 assistants at all times. I remember another post you replied to and I think your DC goes to the same place my friend's DS goes to...I can't believe the ratio for 2 year olds!

Re: Teacher/Student ratio in Nursery school....

In the 3 yr old room at my daycare there are anywhere from 11-14 kids depending on the day with 2 full time teachers and they get a floater to help during lunch and putting the kids on their cots. I am in CT though.
I know when I was in NY, the daycare we were going to put Joey in said that the 3 yr old ratio was 1 teacher for every 8 3 yr olds.

Re: Teacher/Student ratio in Nursery school....

Just went on NYS Dept. of Ed. site. I believe it is only voluntary registration for nursery schools (if less than 3 hours per day) and 2 year old programs aren't discussed. I think if they aren't certified, teachers don't have to be certified or follow a specific curriculum. Here's more info:

NYSDOE Regs

Q. What is the required adult-child ratio in registered nursery schools and/or kindergartens?

In a registered school, at least two adults must be available to each group of children at all times. In addition, the following adult-child ratios must be adhered to (indoors and outside):
Three Year Olds: 1-8
Four year olds: 1-10
Five year olds: 1-15

Yes, the above info is correct.

I'm a PK teacher (4's) & we have to have a 10:1 ratio.

In our 3's room it is 8:1.

In my DD's school (3) they have 14:3 ratio (2:45 minutes)

Re: Teacher/Student ratio in Nursery school....

Thank you all so much. I have a meeting with the director at 1 today. I feel like I am being reasonable asking for additional staff in her room now. Geez I only have 1 3-year-old and it's hard enough keeping an eye on her myself!

I was about to post the same question.

My DS' class has 19 (!) three-year-olds and 2 teachers (well, one teacher and one assistant).

I think the ratio is a disgrace and plan to say something. The class started with 16, which was large enough. Then last week they added three more kids (a local preschool closed and our school took the kids). I understand wanting to help our the families who were stuck when the other school closed, but they need another assistant.

Ours is 12:1:1 at the most. That is the school cap, they say they are allowed 14:1:1.

Re: Teacher/Student ratio in Nursery school....

Update - I met with the Director today. She didn't seem to be very concerned and said that this is how they have beenoperating for over 10 years and haven't had any problems. She even called me at home later to tell me that the actual law is for 3 hours or more but since they are 2.5 hours the ratio is acceptable. Well, not to me itisn't.

I then went to another school that I didn't go with initially because of scheduling issues, but it seems we can work those out. Now I just have to make a decision --- which I am usually very good at but this time I am so torn....

I hate to pull the "I know the whole story card" but I'm sorry it didn't go well today.

I hope you stay because Amelia would miss Ale. But I know that you have to do what is best for you and of course Ale.

DD's class has 1 head teacher, 2 Assistant teachers, and then b/c it is a co-op there is one parent in the classroom every class - so basically 4 adults and 19 children. Usually there are 18 children but this year they took one more.

I'm sorry your meeting didn't go better - you have to be comfortable with the situation or you will not be happy. It's a tough decision.
