Teeth clenching at night

I grind my teeth sometimes and wear a mouthguard to protect my teeth...but I sometimes feel like I'm clenching and it's hard to control at night. I don't know if it's just my guard being tight, but...anyone else do this?

All the time - with and without the guard.

My dentist told me its stress-related.

i don't feel stressed....well, about work, I am.

Does it cause damage to clench? I know grinding does; I had one tooth bonded because I had thin enamel on it. But after 20 years, I'm amazed it was only one tooth.

It will aggrivate your TMJ. I clench all day long - I'm more aware of it now - but I still find myself doing it. It definitely contributes to some of my headaches as well.

A muscle relaxer will help...

All the time, I have TMJ and just started seeing my Chiropractor again and it helps so much, she is also doing acupuncture to relieve the stress. Love it, today was the first morning I woke up with no pain, great.Chat Icon

No, TMJ is your temporo-mandibular joint. TMJ is a misnomer - it's not a condition as everyone has a TMJ. At least that's the way it was explained to me by a Dr and a PT.

The muscle relaxer will help b/c it's your cheek & jaw muscles that are tensing causing the clench.

I see. So clenching doesn't aggravate your teeth or do damage; it just can cause pain.

Your grinding (which I'm told I do as well Chat Icon) is what will do the damage to your teeth.

Yes. The guard prevents damage, but they don't stop the grinding. I wish.....My guard is all scratched on top. I still do it...that's the proof. I wear the guard on my bottom row.

Re: Teeth clenching at night

You may think you don't have pain, but iut can manifest in other areas..headaches, sinus pressure. I went to an ENT for my sinuses and he said a lot of what I was perceiving as sinus pain and pressure was really TMJ Syndrome related.

I also find that when I'm sick or have a headache I naturally clench my jaw more, and even if you're not grinding your teeth, you could still be holding your jaw tight.

Sometimes you can be prescribed a mouthguard, muscle relaxers or even an anti anxiety medication like xanax to take before you go to bed at night. I find chiropractic to be pretty effective at reducing the pain and misalignment, even if it doesn't stop me from clenching again.

I'm a clencher... it caused me to have a much longer recovery from having my wisdom teeth pulled... but I dont' do anything about it.

I find myself grinding my teeth too when I'm falling asleep... it's a noise that send chills down my spine Chat Icon

Re: Teeth clenching at night

I have TMJ and clench...I suffer from wicked migraines!

Apparently, it's stress related for me (and I have genetic "jaw issues" Chat Icon )...but since there's nothing I can do about the level of stress in my life, I "grin and bear it"...Chat Icon

The guard helped...but drinking does too! Chat Icon

Seriously, sorry! Chat Icon

Re: Teeth clenching at night

it can cause TMJ. It can also cause ear issues (I cannot remember the name of it now...) and it can also cause root damage to your teeth if it goes on long enough.
