terrible cough
DS has a terrible cough, not croup. This is his first cough, he's 2.5. When do you take them in for a bad cough? He has a runny nose and is congested. I think it is just a bad cold but the cough has me alarmed since it woke him up really early this morning. Is there anything I can do for him at home? We have a cold mist humidifier running and his head is elevated extra high. I wish my shower got steamier b/c I'd sit in there with him. Oh and I'm TRYING to get him to drink lots of water.

Re: terrible cough
It sounds like you are doing everything you are supposed to. I generally cut dairy out when they have a cough.
Have you gone to the pediatrician yet? If it's a bad as it sounds, he may need an antibiotic for bronchitis.
Hope he's better soon!

Thanks. I am super paranoid about bronchitis b/c I have bad asthma which turns into bronchitis. I always worry that he too will get like this too. If it continues I will definitely bring him in. My poor guy

Re: terrible cough
Put Vicks on his feet then cover with socks. If you have raw honey, you can give him a honey lemon mixture. Hope he gets better soon!

terrible cough
Little colds makes a Honey Elixir (non medicated) to help soothe the throat. My doc also said if its super bad and keeping them awake that motrin may help reduce the swelling, itch and pain of the cough. Good Luck.

There is also something called Zarbee's- same thing- honey elixier It seems to quiet her cough. Also- if it's a post nasal drip causing the coughing- benadryl is good too

Re: terrible cough
Thanks for all the ideas. I'll take a look for that honey thing. I think it is a drip causing the cough.

yep I use Zarbee's too in a pinch.
And yes I use benadryl or claritin to dry her up but I would suggest talking to a doc for that first, even tho its over the counter.
At 2.5, she was taking one full tsp of benadryl every 4-6hrs OR one half tsp of claritin every 12hours (never both). I find benadryl works better with a cough/cold but claritin is good for maintence and long term.

terrible cough
use a saline spray in LO's nose and suck out the mucus. Vicks also makes a night light insert that has the vicks vapors and we use that for DD when she was sick and it helped her breathe.

Re: terrible cough
My DD has a bad cough too. My Dr said if she is wheezing, can't catch her breath or can't take a deep breath without coughing , then she needs to be seen.
You can give her honey, that is proven to help. (Although I didn't notice a difference in DD) My Dr said the darker the honey the better. Humidifier, which you are already doing.
Hope he feels better soon.
