Re: The War on Christmas
I really haven't noticed if I've heard it.
What strikes me as funny is that now I am afraid if I wish someone Happy Holidays they will get offended if they think I am trying to be politically correct and should be saying Merry Christmas.

Re: The War on Christmas
I really never notice.... However, I dont understand why someone would be offended if they were not Christian and someone wished them a Merry Christmas. As a Christian I would never be offended if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah. I think people just like to get upset about something these days.

Re: The War on Christmas
I got a few Merry Christmas' mostly Happy Holidays. But, if someone said Happy Hanukkah to me. I would smile & say it back. No biggie IMO.

Re: The War on Christmas
It's sos tupid.
The point is, whether someone says Meryr Christmas, Happy Holidays, happy Kwanzaa, whatever, they're wishing you well. Smile, say it back and get over it.
Yesterday I was buying a wreath and I said "Happy Holidays" and the florist said "Merry Christmas." I guess he assumed from the huge christmas wreath i was carrying that I'm Christian!

I just think its disrespectful and cant believe people are oh just say Mery Christmas.
What if you dont celebrate it? How can you look at someone and know if they do or dont?
Does it take that much effort to change it to Happy holidays so the Jewish people dont have to feel completly taken over by what the country has made Christmas into?

I don't get offended, but I don't like people assuming that I celebrate Christmas. Being wished Merry Christmas means nothing to me, b/c as a Jew, Christmas does not have meaning for me. However, I can appreciate the sentiment behind it, and will respond with "Happy Holidays."

I don't think you end up thinking about it a lot if you are in the majority of people who celebrate Christmas. When you are a minority, and are regularly confronted with it, it is impossible not to think about it.

Is that the same as asking a vegetarian if they wear leather?

No, my point is, by saying God bless you, you're assuming the person believes in God. I see it as the same thing and many people who will only say Happy Holidays that I know of still say God bless you. If you really want to be picky, how do you know I believe in God?

I say "bless you". I see your point, that people who dont' believe in g-d may not want to be blessed. However, I"m usually saying it to people who I know, and pretty much all my friends and family believe in one g-d or another. Maybe I should switch to gezuntheit.

Re: The War on Christmas
I usually say happy holidays if I'm not sure what they celebrate only because I Don't want to ofend any one. I get wished a happy hanukkah by one of our clients all the time and she knows i'm not Jewish. I rather get wishes of a happy holiday then a grumpy have a nice day.

Ah. No, I don't say "god bless you" when someone sneezes.
ETA: I actually don't see it as the same comparison. A lot of people say Happy Holiday's to encompass ALL the holiday's the occur in December - Christmas is not the only one. I don't say "Happy Holiday's" so as not to offend anyone - I say it b/c it includes EVERYONE (Christmas, Hannakuh, Kwanza, New Year's!).
A good portion of the country believe in God...I do not, but that isn't the reason I don't say "god bless you". But that was covered last week, no?

Re: The War on Christmas
Maybe we just all just say nothing so as not to offend those who don't celebrate anything
My viewpoint is this: I am Catholic; I would not be upset in the least if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah. I would be pleased for them to have wished me well at all. Isn't that what the season is all about anyhow????
As for me...I say "Happy Holidays" to those I don't know. At work I say "Merry Christmas" since I work in a Catholic school

Well, I think they are because I know many people who don't believe in God and could take offense to a God bless you.
As far as it all goes, I'm sorry, I think that if you are offended by someone wishing you good will at this time of year, even in the form of a Merry Christmas or a Happy Hanukkah or Happy Holidays, then you need to reevaluate whether you really would like this to be a pleasant world or not. I try to look for the good. If someone's kind enough to wish me anything in good spirit, I'll take it. Wish me a Merry Wednesday, who cares. I'll take it.

Re: The War on Christmas
Should people say Happy Holidays unless they know you?
Yeah, probably.
But I guess I just feel that there are so many other things that are so much more important going on than to stress over a holiday greeting.
So, would I be a little taken aback if I were wished a "Happy _____ <insert holiday i don't celebrate here>"
But I would not be offended.
So, Merry Christmas/Happy Chanukah/Happy Kwanzaa/Happy Holiday's/Happy New Year/Chinese New Year/Vietnamese New Year, etc.
Did I miss any?

Re: The War on Christmas
I just cannot get over how some of you think people shouldnt feel offended that you assumed or someone assumed they were a certain religion.
That they should just be grateful anything was said at all.
Its called LAZINESS and prejudice at least to me.
If you dont know someone you say Happy Holidays, simple as that, cause not everyone celebrates Christmas.
And if you do know them and say Merry christmas anyway, then your an idiot....
I guess relgious intolerence is a HEATED subject for me, so I get put off when people take it lightly or say ahhhhh get over it...
Why should anyone have to get over it. If people just respected that people are different to begin with.
I AM all for spreading HOLIDAY cheer...But Do that.....
