seriously people are too sensitive these days- everyone is looking to sue everyone - people just need to chill!

I just think its disrespectful and cant believe people are oh just say Mery Christmas.

What if you dont celebrate it?
How can you look at someone and know if they do or dont?

Does it take that much effort to change it to Happy holidays so the Jewish people dont have to feel completly taken over by what the country has made Christmas into?

it goes beyond just saying Merry Christmas vs Happy holiday's- my statement is in regard to fact that you have to spend so much time worrying about who you are going to offend everytime you say something- it's getting in the way of just living and enjoying life-
who cares if the girl at stop and shop says merry christmas- there are worse things that can happen to you in a day besided getting the wrong seasons gretting
JMO!

edited to add- I get mistake for Jewish all the time- the name Beth doesn't help much in that matter- and when some wishes me a happy Rosh Hashanah- I don't get offened- I politley say thank you and tell them I am not jewish and move on

I have a question to those who are offended by the Merry Christmas....do you say God bless you when someone sneezes?

Is that the same as asking a vegetarian if they wear leather? Chat Icon

No, my point is, by saying God bless you, you're assuming the person believes in God. I see it as the same thing and many people who will only say Happy Holidays that I know of still say God bless you. If you really want to be picky, how do you know I believe in God?

well I think the difference is that may more people belive in God....All relgions do...where as this is a relgious holiday(christmas) in a diverse world of others besides Christians........

The two arent similair....

I don't believe in God... But I don't take offense if someone says 'God bless you' In fact, I say it. It's more out of habit than anything.

I celebrate Christmas as more of a family/togetherness thing as opposed to celebrating the birth of Christ, since I'm really not sure that I believe he was the son of God either.

I'm way too confusing to figure out though... but this is when I come up with with I'm dealing with my insomnia.

I say "bless you". I see your point, that people who dont' believe in g-d may not want to be blessed. However, I"m usually saying it to people who I know, and pretty much all my friends and family believe in one g-d or another. Maybe I should switch to gezuntheit.

Oh, I don't think anyone should switch! I just think people should take the good will and move on.

Well, I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I don't like people assuming that I celebrate Christmas, yet I say "bless you." In all honesty though, I never think of the sentiment behind "bless you," just think of it as common courtesy.

As I said earlier, I dont get offended by "Merry Christmas," but I think it is just as easy to say "Happy holidays."

Um, I guess I just like to see the good in things. Too much energy is wasted on the negative. To each their own. And happy holidays to all.

But, not everyone is celebrating a holiday this time of year.

So really, if you think about it, how do you know that when you say "happy holidays" that you are not speaking to a Jehova's Wittness? Or and Muslim? Or any other countless number of religions?

(just playing devil's advocate here).

I see where your coming from.

I am different, I dont like to let things go because thats how this world became the sad place it is.

Some people mean CHEER when saying Merry Christmas. Some are intolerant of other relgions and cant fathom saying happy holidays.....

so I think to avoid the problem, since its the same amount of words, people should take the time to say the phrase that wont exclude an entire relgion ...

But to each their own view Chat Icon

Re: The War on Christmas

As many of you know I work for a bank. I have been saying have a happy holiday to all my customers. I just wouldn't want to say Merry Christmas to someone who might not celebrate it even though I do know what I mean...

Im all for celebrating the holiday's and decorating. Last year we got yelled at for having a Christmas tree and a menora and not a nativity scene cause a tree is a "holiday tree" UMMM NO ITS A CHRISTMAS TREE HONEY. None of my Jewish friends put up a tree and I don't light a menora

I just cannot get over how some of you think people shouldnt feel offended that you assumed or someone assumed they were a certain religion.

That they should just be grateful anything was said at all.

Its called LAZINESS and prejudice at least to me.

If you dont know someone you say Happy Holidays, simple as that, cause not everyone celebrates Christmas.

And if you do know them and say Merry christmas anyway, then your an idiot....

I guess relgious intolerence is a HEATED subject for me, so I get put off when people take it lightly or say ahhhhh get over it...

Why should anyone have to get over it. If people just respected that people are different to begin with.

I AM all for spreading HOLIDAY cheer...But Do that.....

Hmm, I'm kind of offended by this post. Sorry. Wishing someone a "Merry Christmas" qualifies as religious intolerance now?

Again, I just don't think it's something that needs to be stressed over.

I have many more things going on in my life that deserve attention instead of being offended because someone assumed I celebrated a different holiday.

Several of which I am neglecting as we speaking.

So, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to prepare my classroom for tomorrow, pack up some papers, and head home to spend time with my dog who had another chemo treatment today.

Re: The War on Christmas

I tried this once before, so I'll take another stab at it (adding the caveat that I really don't mind when someone wishes me a merry xmas)...

To all those who don't understand:

I am jewish. I don't celebrate christmas. There are many times that I very much feel that I am a minority (for example, this week I went to the Hallmark store and asked if they sell menorah candles. The woman responded, "what is a menorah?"). For the past 6 days I've been celebrating Hanukah, which has significant meaning to me because my ancestors went through hell and back again, survived the worst of conditions in the holocaust, all so I can light the candles with my husband and daughter, say the prayer, and not have to worry that someone will come knocking down my door and take me away. So, this week has a lot of meaning for me and I'm just overjoyed to celebrate it with my young daughter. At the same time, all week, while I'm celebrating this holiday, day and day out, when I'm shopping, eating, out and about, I'm told over and over and over again, Merry Christmas. Not the worst thing in the world, and honestly, I don't give it much thought (until I read these posts), but in the very teeny weeny back of my mind, yes, it's a little bothersome to be wished merry christmas when I'm not celebrating Christmas. I'm celebrating Hanukah, so please have the consideration to wish me a Happy Holidays and recognize that the entire country does not celebrate Christmas.

My bosses did not wish me a happy Chanukah even though they know I'm jewish. One of my bosses gave me a Christmas gift and the card said Merry Christmas.

Not offended, doesn't matter what is wished...it's with all good intentions.

Re: The War on Christmas

I hear happy holidays most of the time. Merry Christmas I hear once in a blue moon.

I tend to use happy holidays, though I'll use Merry Christmas with family and friends I know celebrate it. I work with a mix of people in a variety of religious groups, so that way, I'm not wishing one person a nice holiday and not another. I don't get offended by not hearing Merry Christmas at all--it's really the best way to speak to people you do not know well, or to a group of people who are from various religions.

I get mistaken for Jewish all the time too--it's my last name. Dhs actually, though he's not Jewish either. I'm used to it though--a lot of people thought I was Hispanic with my maiden name, though I am not.

Re: The War on Christmas

Wishing someone a Merry Christmas is FAR from religious intolerance.

I don't get offended by "Happy holidays". I appreciate the well wishes.
But I respond with Merry Christmas.
If someone wished me a Happy Roshashauna (sp?), I may be taken back, but not insulted.

My italian husband doesn't get offended when my Irish family wishes him a Happy St. Paddy's Day.

Gazundheit is just German for God Bless You.

If Jews are a minority, how are the few athiests of the world any different?

People just look for things to get insulted over. This world is out of control.
