Wow. Seriously wow. I feel so bad for your grandma and that she feels betrayed, but maybe her mind blocked it out for a reason (like you said) and the rest of the family saw that she recovered well and left "well enough alone"... I hope she feels better - and I also hope you find some info on what could have happened!

Maybe contact a TV station - I am sure they would love the story and probably have the resources to help!
I agree.
WOW! what a story ! Im so sorry that your grandma feels so sad/betrayed by it. It sounds like she's a true fighter, that she has lived with it for all these years with no problems! truly an amazing story.
I hope she gets some closure to it, that will bring her some comfort.

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
as odd and surprising as this story is, frankly, I don't think it's necessary to know why/when it happened. It happened long ago, and mercifully, your grandma survived and lived most of her life not knowing she went through such trauma. Most of all, it's important to respect your grandma's wishes and not press the issue with her. It's her head, therefore, her call.
If it were my family, I'd leave it alone.
In our family, my grandmother died in her 50's and my grandpa remarried.... My aunt found a picture of grandpa and the new grandma that obviously pre-dated my grandmother's death by about 10 years. She hid it. It was all for the best. we knew the new grandma merely as "grandma" and she was a loved member of the family... we don't need to know any sorted details of possible affairs in the past. It would only hurt the family as a whole.... KWIM? It's a little family secret most of our family doesn't even know about

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
I think we should leave "well enough alone" as well as my grandmother.
However, my mother and her brother (my grandmother's children) really want to investigate this.
Part of me wants to know what happened. Part of me doesn't.
My great grandmother eventually lived with my grandparents (after they married). She passed away in 1972...the year before I was born.
There was ample time for her to tell my grandmother what happened. Over 50 years, in fact.
The fact that she didn't, and nobody did, is what is intriguing my mom and uncle.
I don't know...it's hard to say what people should do in this situation.
It's MY family and I don't even know.
It is a bizarre and unique story.
How this plays out, God only knows.

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
WOW! omgoodness... this is like something you would see on TV. i think you've gotten some good suggestions on where you can investigate this further, but i think perhaps your greandmother was able to block the event out of her mind completely, which the brain can do with something tragic OR maybe like that little league kid who didnt' even know he was shot. who knows?
either way, i wish your grandmother peace in dealing with this... if anything, i would respect her wishes about how she wants this handled. if you are going to investigate it and she doesn't want to know, i would keep quiet about it. you wouldn't want to upset her further.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
OMG! That is def. a story of all stories!!!!!
Poor Grandma.....I can understand the pain and hurt she feels right now b/c she was never told. But, as you agreed, I think all should be well left alone and respect your Grandma's wishes of not "calling the papparazzi" sorta speak.
Perhaps, your great grandmother did know what happened......and maybe was so long ago she never felt the need to tell her.....or she was embarrased and wanted a certain part of her life "unknown". Maybe there were things your great grandma knew that she couldnt "share".
Thankfully, all these years it never bothered her and she is safe. Does your grandma have any type of scar in between her eyes of where it may have entered?
Good luck on any "internal" investigating you do........hope you find answers.......but I'm not so sure you will as it's possible noone knew.

I just read this, and read it again to my DH. We were both completely stunned!!!!
I agree with the OP that says that if she doesn't want it to be public knowledge, you should respect her wishes.
What an unbelievable story. To think that she might have been shot right between the eyes...

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
Holy crap!!!!
I would want to know as well. You're grandmother truely has no memory of anything around that timeframe or is it possible she just isn't saying? Sometimes older people are good at keeping secrets.
I would definetely dig around and find out what happened to her but also what the cause of death of her father was b/c they could be linked as you mentioned.
Also, something else to consider is that when your grandmother passes away, considering she has a bullet in her brain it could become a homicide case where the police would have to look into it if they determine the bullet in her brain led to her death.
I would not only look for past medical records on her but also on your grandfather as well as homicides and crimes around the time.
What is her prognosis now? Is there anything they can do for her dizziness? I feel so horrible for her. To live 80 yrs. and not know

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
It is a crazy story but be prepared that you may find out things you don't want to know. Maybe your family member was connected. Maybe there was some kind of abuse going on in the family and this was an accident. You never know what you might come across that you could regret finding out.
