Wow, it is probably a blessing that she didn't know all of these years and that she was able to cherish her memory of her father without controversy. Her story is more a miraculous survival, that she never had to suffer and feel the psychological pain of being a victim. If i were her, i would not want to know much about what happened. She is 80 years old, how will this information change her life other than cause her pain? At least know she knows not to ever get an MRI, that could be deadly.

As per my DH - if it is a 22 caliber bullet that was found in her head - these are best suited for assassination work, because it's a small caliber and makes less noise than larger calibers and it's extremely accurate. But...in order to be effective, you have to shoot someone in the head with it.
He says the military used to use them for assassination work.
Don't know if that helps at all - just a little bit of gun information.
Does she have any sort of scar on her forehead?

Is there proof about how your great grandfather died, maybe this accident was related to his death and that is why it was never discussed. Hope your Gma feels better!

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
Wow! If you are able to get films. perhaps a ballistics expert can point you to a type of gun, which could unravel pieces of the story. It may have been kept a secret because in those days, any sort of brain injury could have placed a stigma on her. She might have even been denied basic schooling if it was felt she had a brain injury. My own belief is that this is part of family history and it is the type of thing that many people research every day. I am sure that you can find a tactful way to find out. Most depression era stories should be told. My grandmother revealed a lot to me before she died. I am glad to have the information and I am not afraid to look for the pieces she left out. JMO. It is amazing what the human body can withstand. I have a client's X-ray films with so many visible bullets, yet she worked for many years after she was shot.

Please don't read into my reply in the wrong way. In my heart of hearts i can NOT believe a mother or father would KNOW that their little 6 year old was shot and never tell them that. I would assume that if if she went to the hospital that there would be some kind of stitch mark. I would respect my grandmas wishes and NOT look into this.

What an unbelievable story.
Everyone is offering great advise! We are all here to help you out
How is your grandmother feeling? I know you said they can not remove the bullet, so how are they helping her with the dizziness/headaches?
Lots of
(I am using the smilely face b/c even though this is a tough time, your grandmother survived a bullet and that in and of itself is amazing!)

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
What an amazing story! I am sure a morning tv show (today, GMA) would pick this up in a hearbeat b/c it is so interesting, but I understand your grandmother's point about privacy - something today's reality tv show personalities could take a hint from! Everyone gave great advice about looking up old newspapers, etc. I doubt there would even be a report about this b/c back in those times, especially if it was Mafia related, no one would want to get involved. So strange...good luck.

Wow...this is an amazing story....Maybe she does remember but she just doesn't want to tell anyone? Also, at her age she is lucky that she hasn't needed an MRI...that could have been tragic.....

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
New idea- Since you grandma doesn't remember how her Dad passed check with the state and you should be able to provide a death certificate and if a cause of death is known it should be listed on the certificate.
I can't get this story out of my head, I could only imagine what it is like for you, YOURE family. So wild and crazy
eta- I thought I did earlier. My father is a retired cop as well as a hunter. His first reaction to a .22 was but why shot someone in the head with that, it's not a known bullet to be a thru and thru. I don't know if that is right or not but he said that the first time I mentioned the slug. Also, I don't know if you know this or not but my parents live in my house to help me get to doctors and treatments and help take care of my son. They came up the day I was diagnosed (May 22, 2006) and have rarely left my side since. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know they were right here for me to tell I didn't start calling people and spreading the story. I don't know why I felt it was important for you to know that I just did.

Wow. This is such a crazy story. Definitely newsworthy! But I understand not wanting to upset your grandmother. Your theory seems very possible, but try to remember it doesn't mean your great-grandfather wasn't the amazing man your grandmother remembers him as.

Re: The weirdest, most bizarre, most unbelievable story I've decided to share with all of you. And a question.
That is the craziest story!! I personally would have to know more - heck I want to know more now and I don't know you at all! But I would definitely keep it from your grandmother as this is obviously, and understandably, distressing for her.
I just want to ease your mind a bit about the suspected mafia connection that your great-grandfather may or may not have had - if he was, so what? It doesn't mean he was a bad person, it doesn't mean he was a bad husband/father/family man. That was a time when the NYC government was so corrupt that even if he had been the Mayor it would imply he had a shady character - kwim? I'm quite sure there was no way around having a mafia association if you lived in Brooklyn and were Sicilian in the 20s. The same can be said for most people who lived in the city at that time, and certainly for anyone who owned a business.

That's such a crazy story. I think her fathers death and the bullet have to be related. How did she think he died? I would try to research it. It would drive me crazy not knowing. Even though she says she doesn't want to know there must be a million possibilities running through her mind right now. I hope she's feeling better.
