The William Floyd Shooting update and what should I do. updated with link to video
this is the update from News12
"Hunt is on for suspect in Mastic Beach school shooting
PLAY THE VIDEO Play the video (12/13/08) MASTIC BEACH – Police are searching for the gunman who fired shots at William Floyd High School Friday evening, injuring a teenage boy.
The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. following a basketball game between William Floyd and Mercy in Riverhead. Police say a 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. According to school officials, bystanders helped the victim inside after the shooting. He was then taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
The victim’s mother, Melissa Houstin, says her son is expected to undergo surgery to remove a bullet from his lower leg.
Witnesses say the gunshots were fired after a fight broke out between two gangs. Amateur video caught the incident on camera. That footage shows the fighting that preceded the shots, followed by the scrambling of the crowd.
School officials say they hope the footage from two security cameras installed outside the school will help police identify the gunman.
“We've been in touch with the Suffolk Police Department, and we're going to be looking at the entire security operation to see what we can do to prevent this from ever happening again," says School Superintendent Dr. Paul Casciano."
Now if you where in my shoes with your child going to this school. would you send her in on Monday? They still have not gotten the gunman and I am worried that the person will come back for his/her intended target. What should I do? Help me calm down ladies

I would think there would be a TON of security, but you have to do what you feel comfortable with.

ITA, i kept emma home when there was a threat last year. Keeping them home safe is better than worrying yourself sick all day about the what ifs

I interned as a SWer at William Floyd... I think their security totally sux! I cant believe they cant figure out where this Azz is. Where was security that night? How can they say that security will protect when they werent prepared at the shooting. How horrifying for a community.

Janet, we live a couple blocks from the HS, and no, I would NOT send my child to school there on monday.
We want to do whatever we can to make it so she isnt going to William Floyd in a few years, its going to be tough but if it means her safety then its worth it.
Have fun today girl

Re: The William Floyd Shooting update and what should I do.
I just spoke to my mom and she yelled at me for even thinking of not sending her. she just does not understand how bad this school is I wish there was a way to get her into a different school. I am going to call first thing tomorrow morning and tell them i will not send my daughter till I know that this person(child sadly) is caught. I never remember having to worry about a gun at Longwood ever. How in the world are theses kids getting their hands on gun.

I would send her. And what if they don't find the kid in a week? Two weeks? A month?

Honestly, I think you could possibly have this problem anywhere. I went to Miller Place HS and currently they are having a major problem with bomb threats. Unfortunately, this is kind of the day and age that we live in.
As for how a kid gets a gun, I am willing to bet money their parents have one or more.

The thing is, this was real. Someone was shot (a 14 year old) and when you have a child that goes to the same place it is terrifying Im sure.
We used to have bomb threats in my schools when I went, and it was scary, but we were evacuated ASAP and were outside until everything was OK.
I agree that you could have this problem anywhere, and unfortunately we do. But when you think you're in a safe place and comfortable and something changes that its scary KWIM?

I would send her. Security will be increased and the shooter has nothing to gain by returning during school hours. If he is really intent on finding his target, I really don't think he would pursue him in the middle of a crowded school.
Like someone else said - what if it takes them weeks/months to find the guy?? Are you going to keep her home indefinitely?

I'm not saying it isn't real. I am just saying that I am the child of an educator and I would have been sent to school. I think that at a time when a school has something like this is when you need the kids and the teachers to have unity

see that is one of the biggest problems at the school the kids are not afraid of the teachers or security there they laugh in there faces the kids run that school and they know it

Well I guess thats tough to do when you're worried about whats going to happen next. Im sure most children will be at school tomorrow, and Im not saying thats bad.
Its a really sucky thing, very unfortunate for everyone.

i dealt with bomb threats almost every week at school. or the fire alarm being pulled. scary but 90% of all bomb threats are kids not wanting to take a test or something like that. this was a gun, intended to be used and was used. a child lies in the hospital with a bullet in his leg. I guess i am looking for the school to actually show they have control of this and that there will be more eyes and ears at the school till this gunman is caught. They are not giving any answers but we are going to go over our policies to try and prevent this from happening again. that gives me no comfort in my daughters safty

BC they are eff'ing nutz I actually dont know if its a child or adult but I would like to think the search is open to anyone being a suspect. Remember that hockey dad a few yrs back that got into a fight defending his child. I cant remember the whole story but I think he killed the other kids dad. Dont remember the details. This was a basketball game the other nite, right?

Re: The William Floyd Shooting update and what should I do.
As a parent I would say keep your daughter home.
As a teacher in a school where the week before thanksgiving there were mulitple stabbings I would say to send her. ( I teach at a high school in NYC) You can't keep her home forever and I am sure that security will be all over the place. Yes it is a scary situation but as someone said before this is the world that we live in and it could happen anywhere.
I'm sorry you have to worry about this.

Re: The William Floyd Shooting update and what should I do. updated with link to video
I wouldn't send her. I just wouldn't feel comfortable as a parent sending my child to school after a school shooting. I don't know at what point I would feel comfortable, maybe when the school assured each and every parent that security is stepped up and you can visibily see it inside AND outside of the school and every single student that drives into that parking lot is searched.
