Long story short: I think it's horrifying.
I agree. I am appalled that parents would allow and that schools would allow it. I remember in 10th grade this one time I wore a very low cut low shirt to school ( my mom didn't let me, I snuck it) and my choice was cover up or call my mom to come pick me up.
I can't believe there is a market for this kind of stuff

I dont really get it. . .I never wore shorts to school. . . its hot in school for the first and last month - I had shorts that were to my knees, skirts, or pants with a light shirt. . . .
I dont wear shorts above my knee to work and can find plenty to wear, casual and dressy so shorts in school are not a necessity.
As for elsewhere, I hate this look. . . so gross. I remember once this girl stood up in church and you could see the bottom crease of her butt cheek. People around me actually GASPED when she stood up. And then, of course, her mother was next to her in shorts as well - not as short but pretty short as well. To church? its not even hot in there! its always freezing!

Question to teachers/parents.... Do schools ever discuss code of dress?
Do they ever send home notes warning child will be sent home if dressed inappropriately?
I am a HS guidance counselor. My school did... and we were often told that THEY thought the kid looked fine and to stay the hell out of it. 
I have a DD and another on the way. NO WAY is she wearing that when she's so young.

I am a teacher and have had to address this with some students and parents. The parents almost always side with the daughter claiming "All of the stores only have these short shorts, there are no alternatives" 
I don't buy it!
Many of these girls are big enough to wear a size 2/4 , there are a million places to shop.mparents don't know
How to say no. Then will complain when boys and old men check them out

Okay.
I do get why people are upset, but I can NOT find shorts that are appropriate for me to wear on certain occassions. The shorts sold in stores are ALL daisy duke length.

That is not true. I'm a size 0 and I manage to find shorts that are a respectable length

It is DISGUSTING. How are people not able to find normal shorts? I saw shorts in appropriate lengths at Kohls, JCP, Macy's, Ann Taylor Loft, Target and NY&Co, this year. Parents need to stop using it as a cop-out and buy their daughters appropriate clothing.

What's funny is- whenever we bring this up on these boards, everyone says NO WAY would I allow my daughter to dress like that.
I think if we did a poll right now, 100% would agree that their daughter would NEVER be allowed to wear clothes like that at that age.
YET- I see it SO much. So SOMEBODY is allowing it. A lot of parents, actually
(unless the kids are sneaking out and changing, etc)
So either we are all very puritanical on this site (myself included!) or there is a disconnect somewhere!

This is exactly what I used to do! I left the house in modest jeans & a flannel & changed into my other outfits once I was out of my parents sight. I know that most kids aren't doing that, but I'll bet that a lot of kids are!

I worked with an old nun who used to yell at the girls (all girls school) to be careful not to look like PROSTI-TOTS!!! Omg I'm laughing just thinking about it. Parents need to make responsible style choices for their DDs. Parenting is hard... Stand up for your daughters morals.

This is what I'm thinking/wondering! I'd say the majority of the time that I noticed it, the girls were with their parents. In a few of the cases I personally know the parents and consider them to be decent, educated people, which makes me even more

Old Navy sells shorts in 3", 3.5", & 5" lengths. So, clearly there are options.

That's a good point - I was 15 at the time (that's when I started working). At 12 or 13 I was at my mom's mercy when it came to clothes. I was allowed input, sure, but if I had even suggested an immodest outfit I would have been yelled at. When they're that young I think the parents either don't care or perhaps have been desensitized...which is pretty sad.

I haven't seen that many short shorts this summer but then again I really haven't been looking. What I can't stand though is those shorts or pants that say Juicy on the butt or other inappropriate phrase on young girls.

ACtualy, schools do have dress codes. They don't allow one's @$$ cheeks to hang out. Trust me, teachers and admins are disgusted...
However, more often than not, when you call such a young lady in said outfit down to the office and ask her mother to come up with more appropriate clothes, guess what happens???
The mother shows up in the SAME outfit  
Yup, middle aged, well endowed (usually) women in tube tops or spaghetti strap camis showing belly paired with skin tight pants (saw some leopard skin skinny jeans, belly out the other day) or shorts with the @$$ cheeks hanging out... walking into the main office
Seriously, THAT's how you show up to your kids' school???
Unfortunately, much of it goes by the wayside... we have to pick our battles in schools today.

i kid you not, a good friend was just telling my that her younger sister-in-law (16) was invited to a VICTORIA SECRET sweet 16! AKA wear lingerie!!!! Her mother did not let her go and thank god, all of the girls were dressed in NOTHING, literally lingerie at 16!
who in their right mind allows that? then allows their child (at age 16) to show up to a party dressed like that?!

Amazing considering I've managed to find shorts that fit me and my ass doesn't hang out! AND those very shorts are available in ALL sizes! Imagine!
It's what the kids are wearing today and god forbid they not do what everyone else is doing...
I'm sure if bermudas were all the rage they'd be rockin' them.
Lets just hope the trend from shifts slutty to something more appropriate.

i was at my niece's Sweet Sixteen last week and I wanted to die regarding how short the dresses were on some of these young girls.
My (going to be 14) cousin wears this shit. I swear she sat down one day and pulled her knees to her chest, I saw lips. I pulled her inside and gave her a quick lesson on how a lady sits, and that lips hanging out was not hot. I think she thought I was nuts. I didnt give a shit. Youre 13, your crotch should NOT be on display.

I'm in my 30's and I can't remember the last YEAR I left the house in actual "appropriate" shorts because ANY kind of shorts IMO look horrible on me.
I feel really bad for parents of girls, and girls in general who don't know any better but to put it all out there.
Nothing's left to the imagination any more.

I also know for a fact that VS sells shorts in 4 different lengths- from scandalous to frumpy!
And they come in size 0 I believe- so they CAN be found if you really want to..
I agree...I believe ON sells them in different sizes too. IMO as parent if you can't find shorts in an appropriate length then you need an alternative...capris, sundresses etc

In my day (damn I sound old lol) if you wanted to dress like a hooker you had to sneak it out of the house and then change into the getup somewhere else and pray you didn't get caught (by your own parents, or parents of your friends who would most def let them know what you were up to)... nowadays, it seems the parents are fully aware their kids dress like dime-store crackwhores and they're okay with their kid on full display for all the creepos of the world (i.e. the parents of the kid who hosted that nasty sweet 16). So sad these kids don't have a parent looking out for their best interest anymore!!!
