However it's hard in public schools. I teach in Queens and we have a uniform but there aren't many consequences if you don't wear it.
Well see that is the problem. If the school administrators aren't going to put a crack down on the inappropriate clothing, and won't monitor the uniforms, then it all goes to shit, and kids keep dressing how they are dressing.

That is not true. I'm a size 0 and I manage to find shorts that are a respectable length
I'm a size 0 as well. WHere do you shop for them? And I am not asking as a trouble making answer but I am interested. Even NY & Co shorts are super short. My go to for more respectable lenght shorts was always Old Navy and I couldnt buy them there this year either.
Gap, Ann Taylor loft, Macy's , old navy, banana republic, tommy hill figure , j crew
I never thought to check ny & co!
Some Moms may say, oh dd doesn't want to shop there. Oh well! You are the parent, set limits. I personally don't want my sons to see your girls dressed like that. What do you think these boys ( not my boys , they are only toddlers) are going to think about them?!

I don't buy it either. There are plenty of places that sell age appropriate clothing. Sadly, many of the parents dress just like the kids though.
I was so embarrassed for most of the girls at my son's chorus concert last year. They had tiny black mini skirts on, they couldn't even walk without having to hold onto them so they wouldn't ride up. I just want to share my 2 cents. I have a 13 year old SD so I'm all too familiar with the ridiculously short shorts and the arguing over it. I have to admit finding length appropriate shorts for her is no easy task, especially at this age when labels are paramount to everything. Can you find longer shorts? Yes. In Sears. Kohls. JC Penney. Can you find them in the stores that these kids are so desperate to wear to fit in (i.e. Hollister, A&F, AE, etc.)? Not a chance. It's hard because you want your kid to feel like he/she fits in and isn't wearing something embarassing to them but the stores themselves make it very difficult to balance the cool factor with the appropriate factor. I'm pretty lucky in that she isn't a total label whore yet but I see it coming down the pike. And I recall being like that myself. Ironically, all I wanted to wear was B.U.M. Equipment. Quite the opposite!
Thank you. THis is what I was trying to express. I do NOT knwo any 16 year olds that want to wear the "frumpy" length.
Not for nothing, I think there is definitely a happy medium between hoochie mamma shorts/skirts and old lady frumpy. I don't think you have to have your ass cheeks about to pop out to look current, but I guess I could be wrong. How hard is it to say "Ok, we can get some tops and jeans at Abercrombie but we'll buy more substantial shorts in another store"? It seems like parents either don't care and use the 'stores only sell stripper shorts' excuse. What happened to telling your child what is and isn't appropriate?
I am also disgusted that Justice sells shorts with the pockets showing! That is such a trashy look and now they put it on little girls? 
Exactly! I love all the excuses for lazy parenting

I agree with this. Listen when I was 17/18 and all through college I was practically nude but my PARENTS were not buying me these slutty clothes and I was not a minor.

I agree with this. Listen when I was 17/18 and all through college I was practically nude but my PARENTS were not buying me these slutty clothes and I was not a minor.
Oh trust me- I was the queen of slutty dressing as well.
Some of the outfits I wore to the clubs when I was in my early 20's were 
And to this day, I like a dash of sex appeal in my outfits! (Toned down of course!)
But again, when you are 18 and over and paying for your own clothes, who cares.
I just can't understand people like my SIL who buy 6 inch stripper heels for their 13 year old DD to wear to a bar mitzvah.

But at an even youger age in the late 70s early 80s shorts were SHORT and my mom had me in them. It was what the style was. My Butt was not hanging out but they were short.
I think its all jsut a cycle....big clothes with be in again at soem point.

Saw one Tuesday on Park Avenue. Her shirt did not cover her azz, she had on no underwear. It took all my strength not to tap her on the shoulder and tell her she forgot her pants. I mean I could see her butt clearly through the tights.

Not only that, they couldn't even walk in those heels.
You must go to Penn Station on a Friday or Saturday night. You could sit there all night and die laughing at the outfits and the girls trying to walk in heels. Even the cops by the bathrooms are HYSTERICAL.
Ha, i do this all the time - its great to watch them with their little itty steps they have to take because they can't walk in their super tight short skirts!

I really dislike my legs. I dont want anythign super short that shows them too much but once they get a little too long they also make my already way short legs look even shorter.
I'm 5'7" and wear a size 0.. My legs are also disproportionally lOng, so shorts are a pain
Honestly, I normally wear pants or dresses in the summer bc I don't think shorts really look good on any one.. But I have the most luck at target

in the middle school i teach at our principal has really tried to crack down on this problem. If a teacher thinks your short are too short or your outfit too revealing in general, the student goes down to the office and they give them a big ugly school related t shirt to wear over their clothes. i think if it happens repeatedly they get a written referral and then possibly detention, etc

our girls have to put on a GIANT tshirt and sweatpants if they show up in clothing like this-there have been tears shed

When I was that age, I was all about sexy clothes, but I had to hide it under a sweater, bring a change and change in the roller rink bathroom, etc. It was definitely not my parents that were allowing that. I remember my mother finding some platform shoes I had bought at the mall and throwing them away, whilst I wept on top of the garbage can, lol.
I am not one to judge anyone's parenting, because I am sure everyone picks their battles (especially with 13 year olds), but I guess the general permissiveness now is what is surprising to me.
We used to have to sneak around just to wear heels or a v-neck shirt. Now kids show up to Christmas looking like prosti-tots.
Also-as someone who is 5'10" and LOVES shorts....I kind of feel their pain. Except now its my husband who is on my case, not the dean.

These are what I wear, but I wonder if they'll be too big on you. I'm 6'1" and wear a 2 and even those fall down on me. I think I have the 5" and 3" inseams. I gravitate towards the 5" and my husband prefers the 3".

I only want to add to this because I spent the day at Rosh Hashana services and found myself saying to DH more than once "if we have a daughter she will not be allowed out of the house in an outfit like that on a normal day, let alone to services at a synagogue". I work in a middle/high school and honestly MOST of the time our kids are dressed pretty appropriately, but occasionally we get quite the outfit. But in TEMPLE? It just drives me crazy!
