Ehh I don't buy the "can't find shorts that aren't short in stores" argument.
I have seen girls with proper length shorts on.
I don't buy it either. There are plenty of places that sell age appropriate clothing. Sadly, many of the parents dress just like the kids though.
I was so embarrassed for most of the girls at my son's chorus concert last year. They had tiny black mini skirts on, they couldn't even walk without having to hold onto them so they wouldn't ride up. Not sure why the chorus teacher didn't tell them they can't sing in the concert if they weren't dressed appropriately.
My child will be wearing Matilda Jane style ruffles until she is 16

i kid you not, a good friend was just telling my that her younger sister-in-law (16) was invited to a VICTORIA SECRET sweet 16! AKA wear lingerie!!!! Her mother did not let her go and thank god, all of the girls were dressed in NOTHING, literally lingerie at 16!
who in their right mind allows that? then allows their child (at age 16) to show up to a party dressed like that?!

Re: This is a little late but what is/was with the young girls and SHORT shorts?
I was at the mall two weeks ago and there was a girl there who looked about 14. She had on a black shirt and black underwear. The shirt barely covered her underwear and yes you could see her cheeks when she walked. I was disgusted. My 5 year old son said to me - why did that girl forget to wear pants mom? I did not have an answer, but said that we don't dress like that, it was inappropriate, and she looks silly. I knew the girl heard me because she tried to pull her shirt down. I am horrified that the 3 inch hooker shorts can in any way be sold.

I just want to share my 2 cents. I have a 13 year old SD so I'm all too familiar with the ridiculously short shorts and the arguing over it. I have to admit finding length appropriate shorts for her is no easy task, especially at this age when labels are paramount to everything. Can you find longer shorts? Yes. In Sears. Kohls. JC Penney. Can you find them in the stores that these kids are so desperate to wear to fit in (i.e. Hollister, A&F, AE, etc.)? Not a chance. It's hard because you want your kid to feel like he/she fits in and isn't wearing something embarassing to them but the stores themselves make it very difficult to balance the cool factor with the appropriate factor. I'm pretty lucky in that she isn't a total label whore yet but I see it coming down the pike. And I recall being like that myself. Ironically, all I wanted to wear was B.U.M. Equipment. Quite the opposite!

Re: This is a little late but what is/was with the young girls and SHORT shorts?
I def. think part of it is the fashion industry. Yes, there are places that sell shorts that are longer but thats not where the girls are shopping. We were always into hartstrings which is now more for my smaller one. My older one who is 6 now wants justice. She belongs in a 6 shorts and I bought an 8 just so it would give her the style she wants but would get down to at least her mid thigh. My friends dd who is 4 yrs older then mine (10) walks around with justice clothes and the inner pockets are longer then the front part of the shorts. Its ridiculous. The way society dictates style, the kids arent going to be shopping in sears kids dept forever. Its just how it is in school.

I went to a 60th anniversary party this past weekend, and I could not believe what some of these teenagers / early 20's girls were wearing. Seriously. At a 60th anniversary party? WHO are you trying to impress?? Grandpa's BINGO friends?
Not only that, they couldn't even walk in those heels.

I'm not familiar with this store, Justice. But it seems to me like they sell slutty clothes for 6 year olds? If that is the case, there is something very very very wrong in this country and I almost want to move my daugther to a nunery or something.

You must go to Penn Station on a Friday or Saturday night. You could sit there all night and die laughing at the outfits and the girls trying to walk in heels. Even the cops by the bathrooms are HYSTERICAL.

This is a little late but what is/was with the young girls and SHORT shorts?
This has been my pet peeve for a while I have teen nieces and I just shake my head @ what my sister & BIL think is appropriate. The message thesIe young girls are sending is disgusting. Some of these girls have BABY FAT still and the itty bitty clothes dont fit. its painful to look at how tight and bunched up the crotch they are.. and the muffin tops!!!! OMG I so want to tell my nieces "you need to do some crunches and lay off the Starbucks before you even think about wearing that" But I keep my mouth shut.. they have parents.

Oh that's another thing too- a lot of them shouldn't be wearing these things- not just due to their young age, but due to not having the body for it. But they squeeze into it anyway. I also noticed a TON of young girls at the beach in tiny string bikinis- who should not have been!

My kindergartener doesn't even know what Justice is, and if she ever asked to shop there, I would say no. I'm not into sequins, bling, short shorts, etc. I don't wear that stuff myself. There ARE however some appropriate length shorts on there, I just checked it out. Obviously most of the parents aren't buying those though.
School uniforms are not a bad idea!

Okay.
I do get why people are upset, but I can NOT find shorts that are appropriate for me to wear on certain occassions. The shorts sold in stores are ALL daisy duke length.
.
That is not true. I'm a size 0 and I manage to find shorts that are a respectable length
I'm a size 0 as well. WHere do you shop for them? And I am not asking as a trouble making answer but I am interested. Even NY & Co shorts are super short. My go to for more respectable lenght shorts was always Old Navy and I couldnt buy them there this year either.

Kohl's, JC Penney, Lands End, Target, Macy's, Gap. I don't wear short shorts, and I had no problem finding the ones I need. Most stores that have a misses department have appropriate length shorts.

I would rather my kid in frump than tramp (and before anyone gets their shorts in a bunch, I'm not calling anyone's kids or any of the posters trampy).

Not for nothing, I think there is definitely a happy medium between hoochie mamma shorts/skirts and old lady frumpy. I don't think you have to have your ass cheeks about to pop out to look current, but I guess I could be wrong. How hard is it to say "Ok, we can get some tops and jeans at Abercrombie but we'll buy more substantial shorts in another store"? It seems like parents either don't care and use the 'stores only sell stripper shorts' excuse. What happened to telling your child what is and isn't appropriate?
I am also disgusted that Justice sells shorts with the pockets showing! That is such a trashy look and now they put it on little girls?

I THIKNK- that Victoria's Secret has size 0. (not 100% sure and I can't go on their website at work since it's SOOOO dirty. ) And you can pick your shorts in 3 inch, 5 inch, 7 inch or 9 inch inseams.

I don't find that Misses Department clothing fits me properly and shop mostly in the Juniors Department. I just choose not to wear shorts instead of finding shorts in the Juniors Department that I feel comfortable wearing.

OK just checked on my phone. VS does carry size 0 in shorts. The Eva short comes in 4 inseams- and size 0. And it's quite cute!

I'll have to order some and see how they fit. I'm sure they are on sale now.
I really dislike my legs. I dont want anythign super short that shows them too much but once they get a little too long they also make my already way short legs look even shorter.

However it's hard in public schools. I teach in Queens and we have a uniform but there aren't many consequences if you don't wear it.

I have long legs and I ordred the 7 inch inseam and it was PERFECTION on me. Not too short for my long legs- but also not to the knee - which I don't care for. It was the perfect coverage for my thighs
