I hate at home parties because I am always poor and always feel like I need to buy something as to not look rude, lol. Then I go home and think "omg i just spent $50 on a necklace that I could have bought at claires for $10". Oh well.

I usually only will go to them to support a friend that is selling stuff, but i loathe them..

exactly how I feel.

I truly think they would sell a lot more jewelry if they lowered their prices a little. Instead of trying to find the CHEAPEST thing there you'd probably end up spending more on more things. No matter how good they think their stuff is reality is you can find it in most clothing stores for 1/2 the price....therefore you feel like you are being ripped off and don't want to buy anything.
(one of my very good friends is a rep and I went to a party recently where EVERYONE there was saying the same thing).

I will say though, aside from this incident, I was not impressed with the jewerly items, ESPECIALLY when I saw the prices. And some women were spending hundreds! I could go to NY & Co or Kohls and get the same stuff. I was examining some of the pieces and was shocked at the flimsiness you were getting for a $100 necklace! If the quality were truly there, it'd justify the price. This was my first LS party though.

Re: This is why I don't like those at home parties

I feel the same way.

The last Lia Sophia party I went too, I think I spent $80.00 on 3 pairs of earrings and then felt like crap afterwards because it was the holidays, and we should've been using the $$$ for other things.

I also had one pair recently break and I know they boast their policy about fixing stuff, but I just haven't been bothered.

I know that's on me, but I still feel it annoying about at-home sales.

I only went because I felt bad for my friend. There were only 4 of us there plus the host.

I don't think anyone ended up ordering through the catalog either.

At least with Lia Sophia I remember their prices being MUCH more reasonable years ago. But the last few parties I've gone to (within the past two years) the prices were exorbitant but they quality is still mediocre, at best.

I didnt read the whole thread, so unless I'm missing that you got a discount or something - that is completely ridiculous and unprofessional! I am in direct sales and feel bad enough just asking the guests to be the next host. I cant imagine the balls on someone to try and pull this!

Just caught the gist of it - sounds like maybe she didnt explain the host incentive or whatever it was. Is she still holding any of your other jewelry "hostage" or just one piece?

I have no idea if I paid a hostess price or not. If I did I'll gladly pay the difference, or be entitled to a refund if I decide not to host a party. I don't want something for a price I'm not entitled to, but I emailed her and haven't gotten any response.

Honestly, I don't believe this for a second.

I'm sorry do you know her IRL? Because I do and I know for a fact she couldn't be bothered lying about something like this unlike some people on these boards she has better things to do with her time than make up stories about Lia Sophia parties.

I went to a Stella&Dot party and there was a necklace displayed for way over $100 (maybe $140s or so). I thought it was pretty. But not $140 pretty...I seriously saw an almost exact replica of the necklace in kohls for $20. I just cannot justify that! They have to be making a KILLING on profit off this jewelry! Re: This is why I don't like those at home parties

UGH, almost the same thing happened to me.

My friend had a party - so I went. She had a lot of girls, and I was kind of off in a corner chatting - they pass this basket around and i ask what it is and the rep says "oh just pick a prize" - so I do.

i had no idea it was to rope me into having a party - but I told her to charge me full price for items bc i wasn't sure if I could have one (none of my other friends are into it) and then Sandy happened so i never did- but i paid regular price for my items.

I was SHOCKED at how expensive it was! I spent $100 on a ring and two pairs of earrings. The ring was an amber color - well it was really a black stone with a coating bc after the first time i wore it the coating came off in places.

This woman also held up pictures of her babies (to guilt us into buying more Chat Icon ) and said how she makes so much money, etc. it was like a used car salesman, i felt uncomfortable. I didn't stand up and tell her how much money i made!

Re: This is why I don't like those at home parties

I would dispute the charges with my credit card and write off the friendship. There is no reason a real friend would do something like that to you. ETA: I don't go to the Lia Sophia parties because it is over priced for the quality you receive. I would much rather save up for real gold or silver items than spend $150 on knock offs. I would spend maybe $20 on something fake, but the prices they are charging are insane for what you are getting.

I once went to a party and the sales rep kicked things off by launching into a sob story about how she needs the $$$ to pay for her kid's college.

Honestly, right then I decided I was going to buy the absolute smallest thing and be done with it. Guilt trips are not a sales tactic, I will not reward that behavior.

Like I said in the other post, I see these parties like a school or sports fundraiser-- everyone knows the stuff is overpriced and mediocre, but you buy out of obligation. Difference is, at least I'm supporting a school or a team with a fundraiser. Defraying a manipulative sales rep's college bills doesn't give me the same feel-good vibe Chat Icon

Very good points! I do tend to accept the invitation with the notion of having to buy something, so I always try to find something in my budget. If the home parties need clients and word of mouth to survive, it doesn't behoove them to do something slimy in the long run. Also, if the items were priced a little more reasonably, they'd probably get a better turnout. It's hard to compete with retail stores that have similar items for a lot less.

I went to a LS party bought two pairs of earring and both of them broke with limited use. I think their stuff is $$ for what it is..costume jewelry that can be purchased at NY&Co for much less.

I dont believe that she didnt know she was getting the hostess price in turn for agreeing to host a party is what I am saying.

I agree. LIF Friday, call it what you will. I think she hoped to get the hostess incentive price and then duck out of the party. I don't believe the host lied bc it doesn't make sense. She would run into problems all the time doing that and the whole point for those people is to make buddies and chains of parties.

If you were that drunk and don't remember- does the receipt mention the price/discount?

ftr though they SHOULD refund her or offer full price. I don't think it's nice to keep that money.

I've been to many of these parties and I've never heard of any salesperson offering something in exchange for hosting. And knowing the OP, she is not the type to "duck out" of hosting. I'm not saying the salesperson lied, but maybe she didn't make it clear or forgot to mention that it was a hostess gift, or maybe it wasn't even a hostess gift, she paid full price, and the salesperson's just being unprofessional. Who knows???

It's not a party until your nasty face shows up.

It was from freaking October, it was only something that occurred to me last week that I hadn't received my item. And again, since you were OBVIOUSLY there with me, I totally agreed to a party to get a piece of jewelry for what, $10 off? And I'm SURE the rep has done it many times, come to think of it, because several of the girls won pieces of jewelry in other games that were probably leftovers from her "Jewelry Jail."

I am not going to call the President of Lia Sophia to demand my items, I'm going to chalk it up to a lesson learned that some reps out there might do underhanded things to get people to book parties, or that I'll make sure to completely understand what they're saying. I'll gladly support the other at home parties and reps who don't resort to these kinds of tactics.

This has to be the most ridiculous thread I have seen on LIF in a while (and that is saying something!). Calling the OP a liar and saying she was too drunk to know what was going on? Really? Is it SO hard to believe that the rep may have been unclear or slightly misleading? And what exactly would the OP gain by posting a lie like this on LIF? That just makes no sense to me at all...

Like OP, I don't do these parties either...but I don't see where this thread spun and she is "lying" about the incident....I'm "sure" the OP cares so much about what LIF feels about her so she needed to make up a story to garner LIF support...pfft.......geez...give the girl a break...she got screwed, it wasn't her fault.

Re: This is why I don't like those at home parties

Giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, it was a party situation, OP mentions wine, and I'm sure there was lots of talking, so the rep may have mentioned "oh you're the next hostess, so you get this discounted jewelry" and made it more like she won something great than really fully explaining the obligation involved, and like anyone at the party, OP was probably not really on the defensive looking to read the fine print.

It sounds like the rep is adhering to policy and not doing it for the sake of being a b---. it's NOT easy to have a business. If I were the OP, I'd approach the friend and say you're really sorry you can't host a party at this time. You didn't really understand the rules and you'd really appreciate it if you could 1) pay the difference and get th piece or 2) get your money back. 2 May not be an option (company policy) but 1 should be and if i were the friend I might just eat the $10 and give you jewely.

I've thought about direct sales, but i just couldn;'t bring myself to do it because I don't want family and friends to feel pressured in that kind of environment..though if they don't book trips with me i do hold a grudge Chat Icon Anyway i feel the situation is awkward by nature, she has pressure to get parties so she's pressuring you. I'd try to resolve it amicably.
