This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
I'm so done with being a NYC Teacher, done, done, DONE! How dare they put our lives and the lives of the children at risk. It's a skating rink out there! I of course am snuggled under the covers and not going in but come on already! When the hell is the USELESS UFT going to back us up and raise hell about this mistreatment?!?

Re: This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
My husband had to drive his honda civic from Suffolk. I'm having a heart attack.
He didn't go in Monday so he had to go in today. Too bad he had to use his personal days for the birth of our child
You guys better get a new contract soon.

I'm out in Suffolk too. I didn't go in either on Monday, oh well. I refuse to give in to them and be "scared" for taking off if it means keeping myself safe!

Re: This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
I have a feeling that now that there have been a lot more storms, places are going to start doing delays over closing altogether (especially schools).
If you don't feel safe though and have the time I agree staying home is for the best.
So far we have a delayed opening at my job (knew since yesterday) and I KNOW I'm just going in to mostly sit around because none of my clients go out in this.
I work for a hospital system that rarely closes so feel your pain.

I grew up in nyc. Schools closed twice. Hurricane Gloria and the storm of 96. It's nothing new. That's just how it's always been.

Ditto...its not this mayor, its just how its always been. I guess when all of the students and many teachers live within the boroughs and can take mass transit, majority rules? I don't see today as being a rough commute day within the boroughs. Messy, yeah...but everything is running.

This. Of course, we would all like to stay home when the weather isn't great, but that isn't realistic. NYC schools almost never close.

Many teachers DONT live in the city. DH teaches in queens and I'd assume 75% of the staff live in Nassau and Suffolk. His school is not near a subway or train station. Many kids take buses, which isn't safe.
The decision to close should be made district by district.

It's not realistic though. I would have to take a train and two buses to get to my school, and I am only four miles away by driving. My school is in Queens but not by any major bus line or subway. Not happening.
When they say "stay off the roads" but let's put kids on buses and have teachers drive, I have an issue with that.

This shouldn't be a surprise for NYC schools. They historically never close. It's not this mayor or the last.

I am watching The Today Show and Al Roker is pissed NYC has school today - he said it is absolutely inexcusable since the icy conditions are so dangerous.

FWIW, our district isn't closed but delayed.

True, me too. Bloomberg actually closed A LOT in comparison and I never understood why people complained bc he did close lol
That said I was all set to drive to my school, drop my son at daycare and I got stuck in my drive and DH had to shovel me out and push the car--I called in after that and said "sorry not putting my kid in the car in this". It is BAD out there and I live in Queens.

Where do they get substitute teachers in instances like this? Do they even have enough to fill the classrooms? It's obviously a safety issue to get the staff there. But, I read they don't close often because many of the children depend on the hot meals and supervision that they receive in school that they wouldn't otherwise receive at home.

They don't. They put all the kids in the auditorium and watch a movie. Education doesn't go on.

The last snow storm (not monday) 1/2 of our staff called out. 75% of us live on LI. I teach high school and they kept the kids in the gym for the first half of the day, they had lunch, and then they were divided by grades into 4 classrooms and watched a movie. We have 700 students and 100 showed up.

Yes this is what I heard as well. I know when I was a kid we all walked to school. It's wasn't far at all. Most kids came in early for breakfast. Most parents worked. Where would these kids go if the schools closed. Most parents couldn't just take off of work. Growing up snow wasn't a big deal. We just walked slower lol.

Is this really true? WOW. So risk life and limb to see a movie! Unbelievable.
And I will never understand telling everyone to stay off the roads. BUT lets keep the schools open. Sending students and teachers to school is not keeping the roads clear. Makes no sense.
As for what would NYC parents do with their kids if the school was closed. The same thing suburban parents do. You either find a back up baby-sitter or you stay home.
I never understood that either.

Couldn't the same be said for LI schools? Most working parents can't just take off but they don't have a choice. Why is NYC any different?
I am a LI parent and a NYC teacher so that argument kinda sucks.
My students also do not live around the block. Some of them have over an hour commute. Some walk for miles. It is only the elementary schools that are generally local.

Re: This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
I grew up in BKLYN, and while we hardly ever had a snow day, we frequently say in the cafeteria and watched Disney movies...with a Teacher's Aide/Para supervising us. They never had subs...they would either split our class and put 4-5 of us in other classes for the day or we watched movies all day. Complete waste!
How do you tell people to stay off the roads and be safe and in the same breath keep all schools open? My dad teaches in BKLYN and commutes from Suffolk..I hope he stayed home today!
