I think this thread has gone a little too far...enough is enough! I agree! I just don't understand even when going back to the op why she can't want the day off. But 9 pages later I guess it doesn't matter.

Of my 29 students, 10 take yellow buses to and from school. This is nycdoe. Not only am I concerned for their safety at their bus stops (at 6:45/7 am), I am concerned for their safety on those buses because of the slippery streets and narrower than normal roads due to poor plowing/shoveling.
The idea that all kids live in walking distance in the 5 boros is ludicrous. So is the idea that they take mass transit. Maybe a delayed opening or closure for elem schools but keep high schools open would make more sense. Maybe going on a boros by boros basis would make sense. There are no subway stops near my school.
On days with poor weather, I had maybe 10 students in attendance. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you spend over an hour in the car driving in, up to 30 mins looking for a place to park on the street because there is no nicely plowed lot, then slip and slide for five blocks to get to work, and then not be able to teach anyway because there aren't any students in your class.
If I had different job where my day wasn't dictated by whether or not anyone else came in to work, I would feel differently. If we had a parking lot I would feel differently! For the record, my commute is normally 15-20 mins but can take upward of 1.5 hrs if the roads are bad, so no lecture about moving into a house across he street from where I work please.
You can still teach whether one or all of your students show. Teaching doesn't require a full or new lesson every day. Kids can still learn - and probably learn better - when not everyone is there.
Oh look. Another know it all who isn't a teacher.
You can't teach because the school shoves five million kids in your room because they have nowhere else to stick them because they are so short staffed.
It's crowd control for six hours. That's a fact.
I'm a licensed teacher. But thanks, I guess you thought YOU knew it all.
wow
Do you actually teach?
Being licensed and being a teacher are two different things.
Just sayin.
Just answered that question. I work at a school that was open today. And I'm not complaining.
Just sayin. I heard there were alot of preschools open today. Thank god or that
Not a preschool teacher, but nice try
Are we moving on to putting preschool teachers down now? no, not at all. I actually love my dds teacher she's fantastic. I find it funny that you are all fighting over this girl wanting to stay home today. Big deal...you worked. Fantastic! What I do find funny is YOU playing guess my profession. Yeah, we know...the one that's opened today...
I told you I'm a teacher. I'm not sure what you're still trying to guess. I don't have to tell you what school I work in and "out myself" on here to validate that. Would you like to know my name and home address too?

And being an ignorant teacher myself, I have to ask the question (as I only taught in the city for one year) what happens to these children who supposedly ONLY get a meal when school is in session on weekends and during breaks/summer vacation? I am assuming these families who are poor are receiving assistance such as WIC and food stamps to feed their families? Or am I just confused? I have seen so many people on this thread say that these kids will go hungry if they don't go to school and I
They have summer lunch programs http://newyorkcity.nokidhungry.org/free-summer-meals
What happens?? Simple, they dont eat. If there is no food in the house & no school then they dont eat. I was one of those kids who went hungry at times. We also took advantage of the summer meals at the public schools. Some people even with public assistance are dirt poor.
You scratch your head because you can't believe that kids rely on those meals. But it is a part of life for alot more kids than you think. . I am sure people rely on those meals but there are many times that they are home without those meals. I am sorry you were in that situation. But there are many more people that take advantage of this then not. And I don't know why people think poor and homeless children only live in NYC. My mother has worked for the last 30 years at the poorest school district on li and was closed today (and Monday and a week or so ago). The reason NYC schools are kept open are NOT to feed these children despite what you may think. As I said before the city loses money for days not in attendance and that lost revenue hits the city harder than a smaller district on li/jersey. Hell Newark closed school on Monday at 7:50 when those children were already at the school waiting for the breakfast program. Again, unfortunately bueracracy doesn't care about the kids...as much as its nice to think they do.
You dont have to be sorry for me. I was just explaining that there are kids who starve if they dont eat in school. You mention people saying kids will go hungry if there is no school as if thats a false statement. I am simply letting you know kids do go hungry.
I also never said that is the purpose of school and why it should be open or not. Nor did I say only NYC is the only place with poor people. Im just letting you know it does exist, where kids will only eat in school and sharing that I know from first hand experience.

I won't argue with someone who is not going to bend...but...it is NOT sick time to have a child..women working in other fields (I will not say ANY other field, as I do not have that knowledge) do not have to take SICK time to DELIVER A CHILD. Don't even say it's a luxury because that is an insult...enough of the "free" days over the summer..if you think it's free time, ok, become a teacher...
I cannot believe this is the turn this thread has taken..fine..be cranky that teachers are cranky but honestly..to go after maternity leave...get a grip on yourself..
As a city employee I agree with you that it is silly to have to use your sick leave for maternity. I too had to exhaust ALL my sick days AND vacation days when I had my kids. No paid maternity leave whatsoever. Totally blows.
I'm in private and don't get paid maternity. I have to use sick and vacation time. Yes, it blows, but this certainly isn't only a city employee issue.
We already agreed that it sucks no matter what profession you are in...no one said it was just teachers having to do this
You're right. I only skimmed over pages 9-11.
This thread got out of control.

Where do they get substitute teachers in instances like this? Do they even have enough to fill the classrooms? It's obviously a safety issue to get the staff there. But, I read they don't close often because many of the children depend on the hot meals and supervision that they receive in school that they wouldn't otherwise receive at home.
Yes this is what I heard as well. I know when I was a kid we all walked to school. It's wasn't far at all. Most kids came in early for breakfast. Most parents worked. Where would these kids go if the schools closed. Most parents couldn't just take off of work. Growing up snow wasn't a big deal. We just walked slower lol.
Couldn't the same be said for LI schools? Most working parents can't just take off but they don't have a choice. Why is NYC any different?
I am a LI parent and a NYC teacher so that argument kinda sucks.
.
Dare I say it? The reality is in NYC you have much more poverty than the majority of towns in LI. There are many more families within NYC schools that rely on the food, shelter, and parents/families who have jobs that they cannot take off from since if they don't go in, they won't get paid.
This is really the reality, therefore, that adds to the mayor's pressures of not being able to easily close the school.
They pretty much confirmed this statement today by saying kids would not have a hot meal if they closed down. The mayor announced it in his briefing.

This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
The storm last week or whenever that was I went in and risked it. I drove from Long Island. Most people were off the roads but then finding parking was another issue. Over 50% of teachers were absent. Not ONE sub came. Classes were combined. Mass preps were given. It was actually a fun day with crafts and movies. I'm sure the kids liked it. Its scary to risk your life to get to work.
NO MORE SNOW!

On this site, it depends what it is.
Especially if it has anything to do with money, salaries, title/field, credit or debit cards.

so true!
I normally am very annoyed by teachers complaining bc I feel it makes us all look bad. It is one thing to vent to other teachers/educators who get it but to the general public I get that it looks like we don't appreciate the perks we do have, bc we DO have nice perks.
That said, the OP had she been a woman going work in say a medical office would never have experienced this backlash iMO I have seen enough teacher bashing threads on here to know that if you are a teacher you better keep your mouth shut about work gripes....
It sucks for ALL of us that we have to go to work in these conditions, some of us pregnant many of us carting around children--it sucks! Cant we all agree on that?
I mean we don't have 4WD and had I not been with my DH when I got stuck I would have been stranded pregnant with a 2 yr old and my car stuck in ice and snow --that is scary whether I work in a school and office or as an indian chief!

W..t..f !
Fwiw, in my circle of friends, I feel like the teachers are more of the "teacher haters" then anyone else. I have my own opinions about teachers but I have my own opinions about my field too. I don't complaint too much because I also know I have decent benefits and I don't want to seem ungrateful.

I think educators are simply frustrated with mixed messages. It's happening everywhere and it makes you feel like the only sane one in a world that is completely crazy. To hear your boss announce that roads are not safe and people shouldn't be on them.....only to then expect you to disregard that statement is annoying and no matter what your position was on this thread I can't imagine anyone who would not be annoyed by this. Whether it's roads, testing, evaluations..... teachers are being told to do lots of things that go against what should be done for our children and it's getting old. I know several great teachers who just up and left the profession in the last 18 months because it is getting that bad. And for what it's worth I think everyone should be able to make judgements about their driving situations in serious weather conditions, without necessarily being penalized.

I feel like whenever anyone complains about anything, you open yourself up to criticism from a peanut gallery.
Look at how easily threads get out of control on here alone over seemingly innocent or (more often) ridiculous topics.
Some people like to just argue, or have the last word about everything.
