Just got out of school...NYC teacher here. If you envy my maternity leave or summer vacation I encourage you to become a NYC teacher..... We are always looking for people who are "experts" in the field.

First of all I refuse to have the same "free pay" conversation again. It's not a paid vacation but, again, Im not going to prove myself in that area again.
You can use your CAR plus 20 days and then you are removed from payroll and have your health benefits taken away. The 20 days that you borrow put you "in the negative" so that the next year if you or your child is ill you have no sick time to use. I have friends who had their babies 5 years ago and thy are still in the negative. So, if they found anew job or choose to stay home they'd have to pay the city back the money. It's like a loan it's not free pay!
Then take the grace period if you want to stay on the payroll. I don't see what the deal here is.
And let me ask if it's not "paid vacation" then what is it? Do you really expect to double dip during the summer?
You're so ignorant. Really.
Every time you comment on anything on LIF I can't help but roll my eyes.
You're not a teacher therefore you have absolutely NO clue what you're talking about when it comes to the teaching work place, salary, sick days, maternity, etc........I don't give a crap what "research" you did. I find it so amusing how so many people think they are an expert when it comes to the teaching profession..........yet they never taught a day in their life.
You should stop talking now, nothing you say is worth even responding to anymore. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
It's funny how you can call me ignorant, but I have to correct a teacher on here because she doesn't know you can take grace before you borrow days.
It took me 5 minutes to look that up, yet somebody who is a lifetime teacher does not know the rules?
This entire thread is laughable. Now you wonder why the rest of the non teaching community rolls their eyes when these teacher posts come up. It's an absolute joke.
I feel very sorry for the teacher who gets your kids one day. I would not want to deal with such an ignorant, know it all, big mouthed parent such as yourself.
Get over yourself. You're pathetic.

Are you referring to my posts? You actually didn't "teach" me any facts as I was not the one posting on the grace and sick days.
Maybe before you make a snide comment in reference to what someone said you should actually know who you're speaking to. You know, do your "research" and get your facts straight.

I won't argue with someone who is not going to bend...but...it is NOT sick time to have a child..women working in other fields (I will not say ANY other field, as I do not have that knowledge) do not have to take SICK time to DELIVER A CHILD. Don't even say it's a luxury because that is an insult...enough of the "free" days over the summer..if you think it's free time, ok, become a teacher...
I cannot believe this is the turn this thread has taken..fine..be cranky that teachers are cranky but honestly..to go after maternity leave...get a grip on yourself..
I took unpaid leave, as do many private sector employees. However, for me, lack of maternity leave did not in any fashion prevent me from having my children. Silly argument.
I'm not saying it should prevent..but Ave likes to think that the answer to everything regarding teaching is that all of the things you want in order to have a lifestyle is to do without, so before he could say that maybe you shouldn't have a child if you don't want to give up your sick leave, I said it is not a luxury to have a child and I also said I knew not every profession was like ours one way or the other..I am coming to learn that more professions have maternity leave set up like ours..and it's shameful, but that's another discussion entirely...

The decision to shut NYC schools should be district based not city wide
That is how it is on LI. However, once one school closes. The rest of the usually follow.
But Monday,, my oldest had school, and my youngest did not. And today was the opposite.

This is true. I took maternity leave in May. I had to use all my days (including borrowed) before I received grace which for the record is like $150. This was my 3rd maternity leave. They also docked my summer checks because I didn't work the full year.... I was out may and june so i had to give back my August checks.

This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
I'm sorry but nothing irks me more than NYC teachers complaining of no snow days. This is not a new thing. It's something that everyone knows about - including you - when you accept a job as an NYC teacher, choose to live where you live, etc.
MILLIONS of NYC school kids ONLY eat the meals they get through the free lunch program at school. Many of those same kids and others would be left unsupervised if there was no school.
So when mass transit is running and NYC roads are pretty much completely clear to drive on, like they were this morning, of course there is going to be school. If you don't feel safe, use your personal days and stay home. Or take mass transit whether it means waking up earlier and taking two busses and train or not. Millions of NYers do that as their daily commute. Yea it may be an inconvenience but it's a way to get to work when you have - like everyone else that had to go to work today.
You have a job when many Americans don't. Stop complaining about it.

Yes and honestly I dont think many people use the grace days.
Can I just point out that Non teachers seems to have a lot of free time at work since they are able to post (on here and prob many other sites) throughout the day. I notice many regulars posting on many threads and wonder how they have so much free time. When im at work (teaching im currently on childcare) Im lucky if i take 5 mins to each my lunch.

You can't take grace before borrowing days. I've been on maternity 3 times, the last one in May.
Also they docked my August paychecks for the time I was on maternity in May and June. So I lost all of June (because my days and grace ran out) and all of August. If I got paid for not working the summer like you suggest then I should have received my August pay.

Posted by lynnd126 If you work in NYC and live in Suffolk, that is a choice you made for yourself.
If the DOE paid better I could afford to live in Nassau.
You could also rent in queens. Home ownership is not a requirement in life.
Rent in queens is the same as my mortgage in Suffolk.
Ok and your point being? Working in queens you would save a ton off your commute time and avoid this situation altogether. Sounds like a win to me. The point is, you choose to live as far out as you do.
Ah yes, renting an apartment my entire life, the real American dream.
Yes we choose to live in Suffolk. But DH can't choose not to go in, as previous posters pointed out using a sick day as a teacher is not easy. But it falls on deaf ears anyway.

And one issue we have that is unique is that we do t have parking lots so I have a shovel in my trunk so I can self plow out a spot. Yet this is the first time I made my own snow day by calling out. Of my 29 students, 10 take yellow buses to and from school. This is nycdoe. Not only am I concerned for their safety at their bus stops (at 6:45/7 am), I am concerned for their safety on those buses because of the slippery streets and narrower than normal roads due to poor plowing/shoveling.
The idea that all kids live in walking distance in the 5 boros is ludicrous. So is the idea that they take mass transit. Maybe a delayed opening or closure for elem schools but keep high schools open would make more sense. Maybe going on a boros by boros basis would make sense. There are no subway stops near my school.
On days with poor weather, I had maybe 10 students in attendance. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you spend over an hour in the car driving in, up to 30 mins looking for a place to park on the street because there is no nicely plowed lot, then slip and slide for five blocks to get to work, and then not be able to teach anyway because there aren't any students in your class.
If I had different job where my day wasn't dictated by whether or not anyone else came in to work, I would feel differently. If we had a parking lot I would feel differently! For the record, my commute is normally 15-20 mins but can take upward of 1.5 hrs if the roads are bad, so no lecture about moving into a house across he street from where I work please.
You can still teach whether one or all of your students show. Teaching doesn't require a full or new lesson every day. Kids can still learn - and probably learn better - when not everyone is there.

Well, that would be the intelligent, logical thing to do. Act like a grown up who has responsibilities and should tackle them without complaint, or minimal complaint, at that. If you don't like it, use a sick day. But even that creates an argument because they DON'T WANT TO take a sick day. Waaahhhhhhhhh.
But this is LIF. And LIFers just want to stomp their feet, complain, and attack anyone who disagrees.

I know this is a HUGE generalization but I see teachers, more than any other profession, complain about every.little.thing regarding their employment. Snow days, sick days. the UFT, the DOE, the mayor, the kids, the parents... look we KNOW you guys do a wonderful and often thankless job but the bottom line regarding your job - and EVERY OTHER JOB OUT THERE - is that YOU chose this. No one forced you to be a teacher. THAT is what makes you public enemy #1.
ETA: Also, when anyone brings up a good and valid point about teaching, or taking time off, or living somewhere remotely close to where you working instead of CHOOSING to live 45 min away, teachers are the first to get up in arms and claim that we are attacking them.

Oh look. Another know it all who isn't a teacher.
You can't teach because the school shoves five million kids in your room because they have nowhere else to stick them because they are so short staffed.
It's crowd control for six hours. That's a fact.

Roads were not passable when I attempted the trip. LIRR had issues all day although there are no trains by my school anyway. And one issue we have that is unique is that we do t have parking lots so I have a shovel in my trunk so I can self plow out a spot. Yet this is the first time I made my own snow day by calling out. I'm happy to have my job but I'm tired of teachers being public enemy #1 and ease do t tell me others weren't unhappy about their commute today ad I'm sure any person who is the least bit honest will admit try complained a little too
Roads were passable in Queens where I work and in Nassau where I live when I left my house at 7am this morning. I know just how bad the trains were as I had to wait an hour for one bc I chose to take mass transit instead of risk it with driving like I do every other day. I didn't complain bc I know this is NY, it snows, and that makes the commute suck. It's common knowledge when you live here.
Teachers are public enemy #1 when they complain - about schools not closing, about losing break days when schools do close, about not making enough money - because EVERYONE has something to complain about relating to their jobs yet teachers just seem to complain all the time. I dunno whether there's just more of them on here or what.
And ps...this is coming from a licensed teacher not just someone else who thinks they "get it"

Just got out of school...NYC teacher here. If you envy my maternity leave or summer vacation I encourage you to become a NYC teacher..... We are always looking for people who are "experts" in the field.
I just love how this was written..and agree
