I'm sorry but nothing irks me more than NYC teachers complaining of no snow days. This is not a new thing. It's something that everyone knows about - including you - when you accept a job as an NYC teacher, choose to live where you live, etc.
MILLIONS of NYC school kids ONLY eat the meals they get through the free lunch program at school. Many of those same kids and others would be left unsupervised if there was no school.
So when mass transit is running and NYC roads are pretty much completely clear to drive on, like they were this morning, of course there is going to be school. If you don't feel safe, use your personal days and stay home. Or take mass transit whether it means waking up earlier and taking two busses and train or not. Millions of NYers do that as their daily commute. Yea it may be an inconvenience but it's a way to get to work when you have - like everyone else that had to go to work today.
You have a job when many Americans don't. Stop complaining about it.
OMG..... this is what irks me the most. I work in the South Bronx.... extremely high povery rate... 15% of or students showed up today. Students are not left alone because most of the population is on welfare and is at home..... my students turn their noses up at free lunch and bring in loads of junk food to eat instead..... all provided by their parents. School opening is not about feeding the hungry, it is about losing $$$ from Albany.
Off topic a little.
But the senior citizen center I volunteer at is always closed on days like today. As are most if not all of them run by the city. And I can tell you most of them depend on those meals. But I guess it's ok for the elderly to not eat.
I understand they are concerned for their safety, but at the same time they aren't getting fed Guess it's the lesser of two evils.
Maybe its more dangerous for them to venture out?

The decision to shut NYC schools should be district based not city wide
This is the most reasonable comment I've seen on this thread.
My sister lives on one end of Staten Island and works on the other. There is no easy way to take transportation from one part to the other, unlike other parts of the city. Yes, there are buses, and one train line, but access in general is very different than most of the rest of the city (with the exception of NE Queens). This wasn't a problem today, but is on many other snow days, when there is a huge difference between Manhattan and SI.

Right. Which is why I said lesser of 2 evils. Either no food or risk getting hurt. But in the meantime they don't get any meals. Some of them come in for all 3. It's sad. Just as sad as a child not getting lunch. Even sadder in my book, since a child goes home to someone and chances are will get something to eat.

And being an ignorant teacher myself, I have to ask the question (as I only taught in the city for one year) what happens to these children who supposedly ONLY get a meal when school is in session on weekends and during breaks/summer vacation? I am assuming these families who are poor are receiving assistance such as WIC and food stamps to feed their families? Or am I just confused? This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!
This post is just ridiculous. Now people are going to start to compare a preschool teacher to a NYDOE teacher to LI teacher. All jobs from a garbage man, to a teacher, to a doctor to an investment bank all have their pluses and minuses and we need to stop comparing what everyone gets and doesn't get.
The weather sucks. People have to work. If your school is open then its your job to get there and you should make the effort to do so. If you can not, take a sick day or a personal day, just like every other job.

My senior centers are not closed. But those who are able to venture out to senior centers are more than able to prepare something for themselves at home on days that are closed, or days that it's too dangerous to walk, even if its just coffee and cereal. Those seniors who are physically unable to even go to senior centers on a good day get meals on wheels or have home health aides cook for them.

What happens?? Simple, they dont eat. If there is no food in the house & no school then they dont eat. I was one of those kids who went hungry at times. We also took advantage of the summer meals at the public schools. Some people even with public assistance are dirt poor.
You scratch your head because you can't believe that kids rely on those meals. But it is a part of life for alot more kids than you think.

Of my 29 students, 10 take yellow buses to and from school. This is nycdoe. Not only am I concerned for their safety at their bus stops (at 6:45/7 am), I am concerned for their safety on those buses because of the slippery streets and narrower than normal roads due to poor plowing/shoveling.
The idea that all kids live in walking distance in the 5 boros is ludicrous. So is the idea that they take mass transit. Maybe a delayed opening or closure for elem schools but keep high schools open would make more sense. Maybe going on a boros by boros basis would make sense. There are no subway stops near my school.
On days with poor weather, I had maybe 10 students in attendance. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you spend over an hour in the car driving in, up to 30 mins looking for a place to park on the street because there is no nicely plowed lot, then slip and slide for five blocks to get to work, and then not be able to teach anyway because there aren't any students in your class.
If I had different job where my day wasn't dictated by whether or not anyone else came in to work, I would feel differently. If we had a parking lot I would feel differently! For the record, my commute is normally 15-20 mins but can take upward of 1.5 hrs if the roads are bad, so no lecture about moving into a house across he street from where I work please.
You can still teach whether one or all of your students show. Teaching doesn't require a full or new lesson every day. Kids can still learn - and probably learn better - when not everyone is there.
Oh look. Another know it all who isn't a teacher.
You can't teach because the school shoves five million kids in your room because they have nowhere else to stick them because they are so short staffed.
It's crowd control for six hours. That's a fact.
I'm a licensed teacher. But thanks, I guess you thought YOU knew it all.
wow
Do you actually teach?
Being licensed and being a teacher are two different things.
Just sayin.
Just answered that question. I work at a school that was open today. And I'm not complaining.
Just sayin. I heard there were alot of preschools open today. Thank god or that
Not a preschool teacher, but nice try
Are we moving on to putting preschool teachers down now? no, not at all. I actually love my dds teacher she's fantastic. I find it funny that you are all fighting over this girl wanting to stay home today. Big deal...you worked. Fantastic! What I do find funny is YOU playing guess my profession. Yeah, we know...the one that's opened today...

I won't argue with someone who is not going to bend...but...it is NOT sick time to have a child..women working in other fields (I will not say ANY other field, as I do not have that knowledge) do not have to take SICK time to DELIVER A CHILD. Don't even say it's a luxury because that is an insult...enough of the "free" days over the summer..if you think it's free time, ok, become a teacher...
I cannot believe this is the turn this thread has taken..fine..be cranky that teachers are cranky but honestly..to go after maternity leave...get a grip on yourself..
As a city employee I agree with you that it is silly to have to use your sick leave for maternity. I too had to exhaust ALL my sick days AND vacation days when I had my kids. No paid maternity leave whatsoever. Totally blows.
I'm in private and don't get paid maternity. I have to use sick and vacation time. Yes, it blows, but this certainly isn't only a city employee issue.

I am sure people rely on those meals but there are many times that they are home without those meals. I am sorry you were in that situation. But there are many more people that take advantage of this then not. And I don't know why people think poor and homeless children only live in NYC. My mother has worked for the last 30 years at the poorest school district on li and was closed today (and Monday and a week or so ago). The reason NYC schools are kept open are NOT to feed these children despite what you may think. As I said before the city loses money for days not in attendance and that lost revenue hits the city harder than a smaller district on li/jersey. Hell Newark closed school on Monday at 7:50 when those children were already at the school waiting for the breakfast program. Again, unfortunately bueracracy doesn't care about the kids...as much as its nice to think they do.

First of all I refuse to have the same "free pay" conversation again. It's not a paid vacation but, again, Im not going to prove myself in that area again.
You can use your CAR plus 20 days and then you are removed from payroll and have your health benefits taken away. The 20 days that you borrow put you "in the negative" so that the next year if you or your child is ill you have no sick time to use. I have friends who had their babies 5 years ago and thy are still in the negative. So, if they found anew job or choose to stay home they'd have to pay the city back the money. It's like a loan it's not free pay!
Then take the grace period if you want to stay on the payroll. I don't see what the deal here is.
And let me ask if it's not "paid vacation" then what is it? Do you really expect to double dip during the summer?
You're so ignorant. Really.
Every time you comment on anything on LIF I can't help but roll my eyes.
You're not a teacher therefore you have absolutely NO clue what you're talking about when it comes to the teaching work place, salary, sick days, maternity, etc........I don't give a crap what "research" you did. I find it so amusing how so many people think they are an expert when it comes to the teaching profession..........yet they never taught a day in their life.
You should stop talking now, nothing you say is worth even responding to anymore. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
It's funny how you can call me ignorant, but I have to correct a teacher on here because she doesn't know you can take grace before you borrow days.
It took me 5 minutes to look that up, yet somebody who is a lifetime teacher does not know the rules?
This entire thread is laughable. Now you wonder why the rest of the non teaching community rolls their eyes when these teacher posts come up. It's an absolute joke.
Wow, I'm not a teacher, but your attitude is deeply disturbing. I hope you don't project it onto your children. Do you feel that the people who educate young people daily don't deserve respect ? The tone of all your posts implies otherwise.

We are suppose to be adults on this site not children. such a pet peeve of mine when trying to call someone out then defending oneself by saying " I meant it in general". C'mon, anyone who reads this and sees that one or 2 boxes above your comment is ME speaking of a preschool teacher. You then go on to say " now we are comparing preschool teachers". What a coincidence. but whatever.

The tone of all your posts implies otherwise.
...and the poster is wrong. You cannot take grace before you use borrowed days.

If you can not, take a sick day or a personal day, just like every other job. what an azzzzzz read my post above. Get a clue I said I was playing guess my profession like she apparently wanted us to. Step off your bs box and pay attention to the orig post.
I really hope you are not directing this at me and just quoted me wrong as I was AGREEING with you. Nothing I said was soapboxish, so I suggest you take a step back and relax.
i don't want to take a step back and relax. Your first line is totally directed at me so you take a chill and step off.
I was speaking in general that we do not need to start comparing jobs and if I wanted to single you out I would have but I did not. I know what you wrote, I can read. What I was referring to was the multiple posts starting to infer that a LI teacher doesn't know what a NYC teacher has to deal with and they a preschool teacher is different then them. If you read my next line instead of just fixating on the preschool part, I said that every job (and I listed others) has it's perks and minuses and not to compare.
I have no issue with you so lets just drop it. Just next time if you have an issue with something I write, ask instead of insult. Uncalled for.
