I'm not being snarky, but perhaps posts like this should be moved to or started on the "Teachers Only" board.

This wasn't snarky but several of your other posts were!

It's unfortunately my personality. Chat Icon Nonetheless, I am expected at work and teachers should be expected to go to work as well. It sucks, but honestly, while it makes their lives easier, snow day wreak havoc on non-teachers. They post these "woah is me" posts on a public board where many people struggled to get into work by scrambling for childcare or have to take a personal day.

I'm still waiting to hear an answer about whether teachers can take personal days.

I actually took a sick day today because yesterday when I left for work at 530am I slipped on ice and as I fell backwards I slammed the back my head into the bumper on my car and have a concussion.

NYC teachers get 10 days a year. If you take maternity leave you use the days in your bank. So I'm sure many teachers on here use their sick days very sparingly.

Let's not start on those "banked" days because we know many teachers don't use them so they can cash out on them when they retire. Let's not go there.

So I guess these people never get sick from all the kids coughing all over them all day?Chat Icon

I don't know any teachers who don't have to use at least some of their sick days. You surely must be referring to some very old teachers who have been in the system for years, haven't had a baby recently or don't have their own young children to take sick days to care for.

Based on the history of "teacher threads" on LIF we should all know by now this thread will never end well.

There will always be teacher haters, teacher lovers, teachers who complain, teachers who never complain, and on and on.

With regards to school closings, the NYDOE, teachers jobs, etc. NOBODY on LIF will ever agree. We should just leave it alone, no good can come from us all going back and forth. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Bottom line is that teachers are always the first to complain when schools are not closed, but you really do not see non-teachers complain (or not as loudly) when their offices are not closed.

I guess b/c people don't see school as a business.

This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!

I feel bad for ANYONE that has to go to work today, whether it's teachers, state workers or people in private sector. It stinks..it really does. Just all you can do is take your time and be careful on the roads..safety comes first!

The difference between LI and the city is that in the city they do not rely on school busses as much as LI. Kids in the city take public transportation. On LI it's all school busses.

And closing schools is more about the safety of kids than the teachers.

Exactly this. My K child has a 40 min bus ride on LI, they don't want these kids on busses.

Yes, we've established many times teachers can take personal days. WHY do think we were making the point that on days like this your kids is sitting in school doing nothing? Because many teachers DO take a personal day therefore schools are short staffed and classes need to be combined.

OK, than why not just take a personal days if you feel like it is unsafe for you to travel to work?

Maybe the disconnect here is because you are on LI right now and not in the city. However, I am in NYC right now, it is just slushy and isn't even snowing.

As I said above, sure teachers CAN take sick days. Many of them have their own children who get sick, to save those days for.And many if not most principals get really pissed if you don't show up b/c it really makes their day very tough with planning, etc. It's not like you call in and they say, Oh, Susie, stay home! Its no problem. They grumble and get pissed, b/c it makes their difficult day even more difficult trying to find ways to babysit (yes) all of the children that have come in, which is disproportionate to the staff that was able to safely make it in.

Every boss get pissed when you don't come in. In fact, many bosses will dock pay when the employee takes a snow day when the office is open. Teachers are no different than any other employee, except that teachers complain when they have to work when it snows. My facebook page was filled yesterday with teachers commenting that the mayor should have closed the schools before it even started snowing.

Probably because LI started calling delays and closures late last night......that's why they were getting annoyed.

LI schools are just more cautious. I think that's a good thing to be honest. I really wouldn't want my DD out on the bus today. The side roads are crap right now by me. I feel better having her home.

Bottom line is that teachers are always the first to complain when schools are not closed, but you really do not see non-teachers complain (or not as loudly) when their offices are not closed. If it's not safe to drive, or if it's too far of a commute, you don't go in. Plain and simple. When I worked, my job NEVER closed. Contractually we were not allowed to. If it was bad weather I chose NOT to commute 45 minutes. End of story! I don't get blaming the mayor at all.

Really? Because this post http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-anyone-else-822336-1.html from 2 days ago was up. I don't agree with blaming the mayor and honestly, I think my son's school should have been on a 2 hour delay so I could have gone to work too...But it is what it is. Blame the media then. They are all about how dangerous it is outside, Al Roaker and Craig Allen both blasted the Mayor for opening.... It is hard to understand why they are open when everyone is telling people to stay off the roads.

Where do they get substitute teachers in instances like this? Do they even have enough to fill the classrooms? It's obviously a safety issue to get the staff there. But, I read they don't close often because many of the children depend on the hot meals and supervision that they receive in school that they wouldn't otherwise receive at home.

Yes this is what I heard as well. I know when I was a kid we all walked to school. It's wasn't far at all. Most kids came in early for breakfast. Most parents worked. Where would these kids go if the schools closed. Most parents couldn't just take off of work. Growing up snow wasn't a big deal. We just walked slower lol.

Couldn't the same be said for LI schools? Most working parents can't just take off but they don't have a choice. Why is NYC any different?

I am a LI parent and a NYC teacher so that argument kinda sucks.

My students also do not live around the block. Some of them have over an hour commute. Some walk for miles. It is only the elementary schools that are generally local.

This is true. My junior high was a couple of miles away and my high school was in Manhattan, a bus and two trains and a two-avenue walk once I made it to the city. But I did it because that's where I wanted to go to school. Snow, ice, hurricane, hot-as-hell days.
My point is, if you choose to live so far away from your workplace, these issues will come up but its not the employer's responsibility to tell you not to come in. Make the choice yourself, just as you chose to live and work in two places that are not geographically close.

ITA. I hardly ever remember NYC schools closing when I was younger..the only time I remember was the blizzard of 96 and one time in the 80s. Today's weather is nasty and slushy but IMO not enough to warrant closing schools. It's winter time..snow happens. As long as mass transit is running I don't see why schools should be closed.

Unfortunately if you work far from home any type of bad weather is going to make it difficult to go in to work.

ETA: I think there is also a HUGE difference how the roads in NYC are vs the roads on LI. 96% of the time the roads in NYC are plowed and clear..not so sure about LI. Also a good majority of kids in NYC do not bus so you don't have to worry about that.

Mostly men lmao!

My husband has close to 200 saved days but not because of retirement, bc he refuses to miss a day of work unless he is very ill. Its more work to miss a day than to go in, truly!

So i am the one calling out for our kids.

I hate calling out because its so mich work to wrote up plans for a sub and then To catch up all week.

I think that most places should have been on a delay at least not just schools. Just to give people time to make arrangements for kids, shovel, and take their time to get to work

Just throwing this out there.

My brother posted this picture on FB this morning. He's in Staten Island.

IMAGE

Saying stay off the roads. Can't believe school is open. Watched this bus skid off the highway.

My two cents:
It's not safe for anyone when it's this slick out. The new NYC mayor is an asshole. They are using the NYC school teachers as babysitters because the parents can't get off of work either. It's a joke. I cannot believe some of you are arguing this point. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

wow! That's crazy! And to think people are arguing over who should stay or go to work today. Put a value on your own life and stop criticizing others over what YOU chose to do. So what the op wants to vent. So what you went to work. Hope your commute was lovely and hope you get home safe as well.
Also, the reason schools delay or open is $$$$$$ let's NOT play stupid and think that it's bc of low income families that struggle. C' mon now.

Re: This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!

I am not in this school district but my friend just posted this from the superintendent of her district. Most bosses should value their employees like this (not just schools).

ALL SYOSSET SCHOOLS AND OFFICES ARE CLOSED TODAY.

The details - (I know you like to hear the details!) - I've been tracking the various National Weather Service and related data to which I'm privy. The storm is not changing over to rain in our region any time soon. It has been snowing for several hours, and it will soon change to ice, not snow. The ice is moving due east from Pennsylvania and does not look like it will stop for hours. A delay won't do enough or give enough time. Our bus company contact was out on the roads as we now this year have arranged for him to be, from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., and he advised us "it's not safe to roll buses." And as of now, 5:20 a.m., the entire northeast quadrant of Nassau has decided to close, as has Nassau Boces. I believe others will similarly decide.

Safety first and this is a bad storm. We'll just have to make it up on Thursday, May 22, but that is exactly why we have built in several contingency days in the calendar.

Stay safe and be careful today - everything we do in school can be made up, but destroyed life and limb cannot.

I don't get why NYC schools don't close. It is so odd to me. What is the difference between NYC and Long Island, North NJ or CT? Here in North NJ, schools have closed every time there has been bad weather including today and Monday. Parents work here too. There must be another reason.

It has been addressed in this thread already - NYC school children use public transportation for the most part and unless there is 20 inches of snow, public transportation doesn't shut down.

This is what I said in another post..

Dare I say it? The reality is in NYC you have much more poverty than the majority of towns in LI. There are many more families within NYC schools that rely on the food, shelter, and parents/families who have jobs that they cannot take off from since if they don't go in, they won't get paid.

This is really the reality, therefore, that adds to the mayor's pressures of not being able to easily close the school.

Add in the poor mismanagement, the overwhelming size of the NYC DOE and it's all pretty difficult for the mayor to close and for it to be a smooth process.

Good point. I think it more about the availability of public transportation than the socioeconomic piece. I say this because ALL of the North NJ districts all closed including ones in areas with higher poverty. However, I"m sure that it does play a role.

This brings up an interesting point - how many people will be complaining come May 22? I know that when I was growing up my mother HATED when they had to use snow days because she counted on those extra-long weekends to plan vacations. Chat Icon

Bottom line is that teachers are always the first to complain when schools are not closed, but you really do not see non-teachers complain (or not as loudly) when their offices are not closed. of story! I don't get blaming the mayor at all.

Actually that's not true and it's threads like this that make other teachers look bad. My husband got his butt up out of bed early and walked to the subway, not a peep out of him. Not a peep when the trains were shut down at 59th and he had to take a taxi the rest of the way. Not a peep when he got to school late. Not a peep when he continues with his lessons. The majority of his students and coworkers live in the area of the school so it's business as usual for them.
