And today my beautiful nices, ages 10 and 8, are doing this. They were nominated by their friends. Not only are these dumping ice water on their heads, making adorable videos that my sister will post (much to the dismay of all the naysayers) , but donating THEIR OWN MONEY as well. And they won't be mentioning that in the video.
Why dump water? well you are doing something for others. You are exchanging your own discomfort in order to help raise money and awareenss.
Why run races? or do the polar bear challenge for organizations? Why not just say hey I'd like to raise some money for the XYZ foundation so you would please donate? Because you are doing something in exhange for getting others to donate. I'm running the NYC Marathon for cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. IS that stupid too?
None of what people put themselves through in order to raise money/awareness really makes sense does it? Its just a fundraising tactic. I can't believe how many people are making this into a debatable topic or something to argue over.

That is not what I am speaking about and I think others too. My point is that if you ARE going to do this or anything else to help a charity, you should be donating money. Everything has turned into wanting to do what everyone else is doing but they are not even understanding WHY they are doing it and/or the point of the challenge is not being met. I get that the awareness has been increased and yes, they have gotten more donations. I think all of us would just hope that if you choose to take the "challenge" (of anything basically) you would not be doing it because everyone else is. You would be doing it because you want to and that you want to donate money to help out a good cause.

this stupid ice water challenge....
I have not read all the responses but my biggest issue with this is that if people are not donating AND pouring water on their head then yes its kind of pointless and stupid. Also I think at this point I FEEL that ALS has a raised enough money and if this continues I think people should switch to other charities who also need help.

I'm not bothered by the videos even in the least. I actually find a lot of them quite entertaining. I have more of an issue with people doing it to avoid donating. It just rubs me the wrong way. I actually saw one of my fb friends not even use ice water and then go on to say it was too much money to buy ice. Really? How is that even helping this cause?!?!

But that's what it is set up to do!!!!
Apparently the "original" message was do it and donate $10, or don't and donate $100. For the past 2 weeks its about pouring water and NOT donating. I agree that THAT rubs me the wrong way. You can politely decline. Just don't do it to avoid donating. Thankfully I have not been nominated yet because I would politely decline.
I have no desire to be extorted to donate to someone else's cause. I donate to MY causes. Does not mean yours is worse, or mine is better. But I donate where I personally like, not by being shamed or extorted.
This is a great cause. Its not my cause.

Most of you are missing the point. ALSA has raised over 13 million as of today so even if you're self absorbed a$$hole facebook friends are not donating, SOMEONE is. SMH

I am not missing the point and I will still stand by what I say.
I think its pointless and stupid if you are not donating (even if its $10) and all you are doing is just pouring water over your head. I get that its obviously working which is why I also think people should start picking different charities to donate too to help those charities out.
it doesn't bother me that the videos are being posted I either ignore them or if I am bored I will watch them.

Agree
Even People mag had it wrong last week- they discussed the "viral sensation" where people dump a bucket of water OR donate.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
I also want to add for the people that complained about the people who didn't donate or just did it to be funny
Maybe they didn't donate, but the people they nominated might have so if they don't do it,that donation might not have been made
That's why all of he challenges are important

There is 1 question I have that has been bothering me. I'm 100% for adults doing this, raising money and raising awareness. Is anyone else struck by people dumping ice water on kids under 8 years old, babies and even pets? What about the fact mom is reciting to the kids (that appear to be mimicking and in lala land) what they should say, who they will nominate... many kids look reluctant to go through with it and I saw many little ones cry after the water was poured on them. In a day and age where you are in trouble for scolding a child for bad behavior how is everyone with mama's dumping ice water on little ones and the poor child screaming and/or crying and dada is laughing and video taping? Again, I'm not against a consenting adult making a decision to do this. I'm happy that awareness is increasing, it would be great if more unknown diseases/charities got some spotlight too. Is involving small children and animals taking a good concept over to the other side?
This is ridiculous! My four year old son did it with my husband and had a blast! By no way was I "taking him to the other side"! That is insulting! I tried to explain to him in a way that he could understand, and if he didn't, he had a great time and we donated in his name as well! It was a little bucket and he was so proud of himself! Everyone needs to stop blowing this out of proportion! People will complain about anything! Get off Facebook if you don't want to see it or scroll past! My lord! Why not look at it as a way to show your children how to be charitable and have a little fun in life ...just saying

I saw several kids cry and I felt sincerely bad for them. Good for your kids that's great that they enjoyed it! I was curious what people thought. Sorry I "offended"you.

this stupid ice water challenge....
Almost Everyone I know did both. But you know what. Some people who dumped water and didn't donate, couldn't afford to donate! There is one person I know who dumped 2 times because he was nominated 2 times. He can't afford to donate right now. But he nominated people who did.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
I had to post this from a blog I've been reading for years... she sums up why the IBC is relevant and not "stupid" (I personally think she hits the nail on the head)...
The grumbles I’ve seen usually fall into the following camps: 1. The Ice Bucket Challenge is “slacktivism” and does nothing to educate the masses about ALS. While I’m certain there are people participating in the IBC who don’t really understand the point of it, I think they are far outnumbered by the people who have had their eyes opened to ALS. I see at least two threads every day where a commenter states they’d never heard of ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease before the challenge. That’s a huge victory right there! If a person is suddenly aware of a disease without being personally affected by it, they are more likely to pay attention to it in the future, and more likely to donate funds when they’re available – especially the IBC challengers who now do have a connection to the disease, albeit a superficial one. While the campaign may not spread individual facts about ALS, it makes the disease itself known, allowing people to find out more information on their own time. 2. The Ice Bucket Challenge is just about people who want attention -if they truly cared they’d just quietly donate money. More than 1.2 million IBC videos have been posted to social media since the end of July. That’s 1.2 million pieces of free advertising and awareness, including HUGE celebrities lending their names to the cause. You couldn’t DREAM of better exposure than that! The numbers also prove that while lots people are posting videos, many of them are also making donations. In the last twenty days, the IBC has raised over $15.6 million for the ALS Association, which included money from over 307,000 new donors. In less than three weeks! Compare that to the $1.7 million the ALS Association raised in the same time period last year and you really see how successful this movement has been. 3. The Ice Bucket Challenge is bullying people into paying attention to a charity that doesn’t affect them/they don’t care about. This is the argument that saddens me the most. Why do we have to be personally touched by something to acknowledge its importance? Around 5,600 new cases of ALS are diagnosed every year, a small number to be sure. That does not mean it isn’t a devastating disease that’s unworthy of any research or attention. ALS doesn’t discriminate – literally anyone can get it. But guess what? No one is forcing you to participate. I’ve also seen plenty of videos where the person taking the challenge used the opportunity to mention ALS and the charity of their choice. 3b. There are more deserving charities than the ALS Association. UGH. I’m sure there are charities you have a personal interest in for a variety of reasons, but that doesn’t make the ALS Association less deserving. Talk like that diminishes everyone who has suffered from ALS, and that’s unfair. Every charity is important. Instead of whining about the charities you wish were benefitting from the challenge, donate to them. In fact, donate every time you see an Ice Bucket Challenge video. And while you’re at it, try to think about a way to raise awareness for your chosen charities that doesn’t devalue the importance of another charity. I would LOVE for there to be a viral movement like this that raised money and awareness for maternal/fetal health issues, prematurity, and NICU families. I do NOT want that at the expense of the ALS Association. I hope that with all of the money they’ve raised they’re able to make huge strides in research. And I hope that all of us trying to raise awareness for our causes remember that there’s room for everyone.

I don't think it's stupid but I dont think 1 - you should dictate what charity I donate to and 2 - how much I should donate. I got nominated and I'm not doing it. I give regularly to charities that I am involved with so I don't feel bad not participating.
This is exactly how I feel. I'd be far more inclined to do it if I could choose a charity of my choice. And just think about how awesome it would be to hear about all the different charities that people support. I know the ALS cause is a great one, and I'm glad it seems to be helping them. But I do very careful research before donating to charities, and there are many that could use a boost like this challenge is giving.
Some people I am friends with have donated to the charities of their choice. I accepted the challenge and donated to ALS and another charity close to my heart.
