Those who use Born Free bottles - question about ventilation piece

These bottles have worked well for us, but lately, when I wash everything in the dishwasher, for some reason the ventilation piece comes up with black specs in it and I end up having to hand wash them! Ugghhh. So now that DS is over 10 months old, I was wondering can I use the bottles without that piece? I can't imagine why not since many bottles do not even come with that. It would just save me so much time. Anyone have any experience not using the piece, does it make the formula come out too fast?

Thanks.

i think that peice is specifically to slow down the formula intake to avoid gas or if ur child has reflux to slow them down to avoid any pain.....i know the born free sippies come with the vent too so i figure they do want u to use them but i guess if ur dc doesnt have stomache issues it would be fine

btw the black specs...could they be from using brita water? bc i use brita water and the black specs are charcoal specs from the filter....could that be it?

I do use Brita water. The strange thing is that I always notice them after I take the bottle pieces from the dishwasher. Maybe there is some residual Brita water that is mixing in?? You're probably right though. Thanks for the reply!

it could possibly be some residual brita water....you could always rinse them after taking them out of the dishwasher and before using them

It may be the Brita b/c I use RTF formula and clean the bottles everyday in the dishwasher and I never had black specs. Chat Icon I have also tried to feed DD without the venting system when I forgot to bring it once and it made a HUGE mess leaking all over! Don't do it. Chat Icon

i would think it's the brita. don't use the bottles without the ventilation--they leaked all over on the few occasions i forgot to put it in.

i don't pt my bottles in the dishwasher. sometimes they flip over and dirty water settles in it--that is so gross to me so i only handwash them.

What's strange is I've been using the Brita water for months and only the past month I've been dealing with the specs in that one piece Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We've noticed that both the nipples and the ventilation piece (in other words, all silicone parts) have some food residue stuck to them once the washer is done. I bet there's something black in the bottom of your dishwasher, or you're regularly eating something black-sih.

we've just gotten into the habit of putting a dot of dishliquid on our finger and rinsing all of the silicone bits before dumping it into our "clean bottle part" bowl. It only takes a minute to do 5 bottles worth of parts.... (no sponge or brush necessary)

HTH!

have you replaced the filter recently? a lot of times you get the black specs for a few days after replacing it.

Sorry to crash but we had black specs in our drinking water when we changed our Brita filter. We didn't know you have to soak the filter before using it. Did you soak the filter?
