Thyroid issues

So, I just went for my physical and all was good, my bloodwork came back perfect - especially my thyroid. BUT, during the actual exam, my doctor noticed that my thyroid felt "full" and he wants to do a sono on it, and now that he said that it explains the throat pain I've been having (just thought it was residual from being a little sick last week). Anyone know anything about thyroids?

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I was diagnosed about nine years ago. If your thyroid is "full" it could be a sign that it is over active. A thyroid ultrasound takes a couple of minutes and most endocrinologists will do it in office. If you suspect you have a thyroid issue it would be helpful to set up a consult with an endocrinologist. Most general practitioners are well meaning but lack the experience for thyroid issues that are not clear cut-- at least this was my personal experience.

Thanks a bunch! I'm thinking I might have to go that route, I guess it depends on what the sonogram shows tonight. I do have a family history of goiter, apparently... I had no idea!

I have Graves Disease. I also had thyroid nodules, enlarged thyroid gland and HYPER-Thyroidism when I was in my early 20's. Very skinny, sweating a lot, heart palpitations. Then had Radioactive Iodine treatment to destroy my thyroid. (it's easier to treat hypo then hyper) It killed most of it off and I am now HYPO-Thyroid. No more nodules and thyroid has become regular size. Take Synthroid daily.

Back when I was diagnosed, I had a thyroid function test. You take radioactive pill and they test to see how much your thyroid absorbs. It went on from there. They also did a Thyroid Antibody test to see if I had Graves, which i did. Thyroids sure are tricky.

What were your thyroid levels if you don't mind me asking? Because some Drs. say "normal" is up to a 5 and I know for ME, I have to be between a 2-3 to feel good and for my body to run right. So just because it came back as "normal" doesn't mean it's normal for you, ya know?

I forgot to take my copy of the records back from my acu, but the tsh was 1.55, and the other levels were in the "perfect" range. I had my sono on Friday night (and, ps, zwanger had the report on the patient portal that night), and the report showed no nodules, just "a mildly enlarged thyroid". My acu suggested being strict with the gluten free as gluten (because it's so genetically modified) has a big effect on the thyroid.
