Tip giving at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts places like that....
How much would you tip for cofee, how do you figure it out...same way 15-20% or whatever change left over?
Anyone feel you shouldn't tip? LOL took my mom to DD for 2 medium coffees, a couple of donuts..90 cents was her change & I told her to put it in the tip cup and she says out loud are you crazy!! I personally keep going back and forth with tipping at coffee shops. I mean isn't McDonalds the same thing as far as the way they service you? They're getting your food ready, they are serving up a drink for you & yet nobody tips them. I see where Starbucks is a little more involved when making a fancy cup of Joe but Dunkin Donuts??? Edit: about Starbucks some of their coffees are delicious but all too I think

yes, as someone who works for tips. I DO NOT TIP the DD chick. I think tip jars are out of control. I have seen them in McD's. I find it tacky. JMHO

I dont think its tacky at all. Most times I use a debit card at my DD, but if I have cash I always leave them a tip. I usually just leave them whatever coin change I get back in the tip jar.
Also, if I havent left a tip in a while I usually leave a dollar or two to make up for it at a later time. Some of these places are crazy busy and they are being paid low wages. I figured its the least I can do.

You'd be surprised how much Starbucks pays some of their barisitas(sp?)

See, I have done this too but it doesn't help the person that serviced you before. Usually they are different people working when I go in again at the DD by me. So one time I go in for a medium coffe just milk paid my $2 and was getting ready to leave and I saw where the woman got annoyed. I don't know how much people get paid at DD but I'm sure it's not like $2 an hour like waiters and waitresses. Also they do not work at all as hard as waiters and waitresses. I just think it has gotten a bit too much with the tipping lately in walk in coffee shops. Are we tipping in ice cream shops now? I jusn't haven't been in a shop lately to tell and I was surprised that tip boxes are showing up in McDonalds too now.

I was thinking about working there too because of this & if you work just part time you get medical benefits. They do real well there.

My SIL works for Starbucks and she supports her two kids on her salary. She does well for working there. And the reason I dont tip is they do get a salary. Tips NORMALLY go towards those who dont get paid a salary. A waitress hourly wage is around $3 ph. so, you tip to compensate the lack of salary.

No, I don't tip and I think there shouldn't be a tip jar. DD and Starbucks employees get more than $3 a hour. Servers at restaurants only $3 plus tips. Also from their tips they must 'tip out' busboys, bartenders, hostesses (depends on the restaurant).
Tipping is so out of control.

I don't consider Starbucks/DD to be a "tip job". Just like neither is McDonald's, Burger King, Dry Cleaner, deli counter, etc...
They do have a salary. Not a base salary and hoping for tips.
They may not make much but so is the pay scale for such jobs.

ITA. If I do go to McDonalds and have change, I put it in the little Ronald McDonald house by the register.

I don't tip at places like DD, SB, McD's etc.
Like a pp said tip jars are getting out of control. Everyone expects a tip now a days for work that the majority of them are getting paid for accordingly.

I don't tip in places like that. They are making regular, not service, wages so tips are not necessary.

They do EXTREMELY well there. They even have a retirement plan.
I don't ever tip at places like this. Its getting out of control. Pretty soon there's gonna be a tip jar at the post office!!

Re: Tip giving at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts places like that....
I do tip at DD. DD was one of my sister's first jobs and most of her pay came from tips. I believe her regular pay was below minimum. Having said that .. she worked at the DD in Bay Shore where people actually sat on stools, ordered donuts and ate them there.
Actually - I'm a sucker, I tip everywhere when i get good service.

I don't tip at those places. I also feel that tip jars are apearing everywhere and its quite annoying that they "expect a tip".
I mean if I am expected to tip the starbucks barista or the ralph's italian ice worker, then I might just put a tip jar out on my desk when I do open houses and hope that the parents decide they want to tip their children's teachers for a job well done.

Re: Tip giving at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts places like that....
It's honestly never even crossed my mind to tip @ DD or Starbucks.
Yeah, I see the tip jar there and I think it's tacky. If I have change I just don't feel like carrying around, I'll throw it in there, but never intended as a tip.
If you take your theory of them making a coffee as a service, would you also tip the guy at the deli who makes your sandwich or at the bagel store or the ice cream parlor?
I think tipping is out of control. I worked as a waitress for years, getting less than $3/hr and no benefits, no overtime. That's a completely different story in my mind than a Starbucks barister.

Re: Tip giving at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts places like that....
I don't tip at places like Starbucks, DD, delis, etc. I think it's ridiculous. I don't think it compares to waiters and waitresses considering the difference in pay rates and service provided.
