My DH tips EVERYONE. I tip only the people who make low hourly wages. This includes but is not limited to:

Servers (waiters, waitresses, bartenders)
Nail Techs
Delivery Drivers
Hairdressers/Shampoo girls/etc
Eyebrow place/aesthetician

We had a plumber come last week and my DH asked if I tipped him. I'm like no why? Hes like because he came to the house, its a service. I'm like I PAID HIM, NOT TIPPED HIM! WTH?!?!?!?

No tip. You are charging me $4 for a cup of coffee that you poured into a cup and had to carry 2 feet. Plus they aren't paid like a standard waiter / waitress.

Maybe I should put a nice tip jar on my area desk at work. When someone tips me for doing my job, I'll start tipping others. I do tip in normal situations, though

How much would you tip for cofee, how do you figure it out...same way 15-20% or whatever change left over?

ZERO.

Anyone feel you shouldn't tip? LOL took my mom to DD for 2 medium coffees, a couple of donuts..90 cents was her change & I told her to put it in the tip cup and she says out loud are you crazy!! I personally keep going back and forth with tipping at coffee shops. I mean isn't McDonalds the same thing as far as the way they service you? They're getting your food ready, they are serving up a drink for you & yet nobody tips them. I see where Starbucks is a little more involved when making a fancy cup of Joe but Dunkin Donuts??? Edit: about Starbucks some of their coffees are delicious but all too Chat Icon I think

I don't think you should tip. It's ridiculous. Employees at McDonald's, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, etc, are just that - employees who get PAID a salary to do whatever it is they are doing behind the counter. They are not members of the service industry whose base hourly wage is below minimum like an actual waiter or waitress.

The expectation of a tip is out of control. My DH always puts his change in those tip jars and it makes me nuts. Why do they need extra money for doing their job????????????

Re: Tip giving at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts places like that....

I tip at Starbucks... when it's my 'regular' location. I do not tip everyday or everytime, but I will throw a few dollars in on holidays.

Why? I know on holidays the people working are the ONLY ones getting the tips from that day and splitting them. I know that they get an hourly wage, but do not get more for the holiday. I am going in to get something from someone working on that holiday and I appreciate them. So to me that is a thank you and happy holiday on my part.

When I do use cash at starbucks,,, and that is rare.. I will throw some change in. Usually not my quaters
Chat Icon but maybe something less than $.50.

I'll throw in some of my change on occasion, but I don't regularly tip at those places. I agree that tipping is way out of control these days.

Traditional servers/waiters/waittresses do not make minimum wage and need the tips to make them up. They are taxed on minimum wage too. People in DD, McDonalds and SB make at least minimum wage. I do not tip at any of the places.

Like a PP said we get our pay it's not like we make below MW and live off tips ! I have been given tips before ,and I do let them know I can't accept it , but if they leave it anyway , I put it in the Ronald House.

I tip at the DD I go to in the morning before work. If I get a medium coffee it's $1.92 and I give them $2 and put the .08 in the jar. The lady that works there in the mornings is a hard worker, works 7 days a week, knows my coffee when she sees me and is always pleasant. So I don't see why I can't give give her .40 cents a week Chat Icon

I don't know if this is so much a tip, or you just not wanting the pennies you get back. If you spent $10 in a restaurant would you leave the waiter/waitress 40 cents??

I think the OP is more talking about throwing something substantial in there.

I only tip the tip jar at my local ice cream parlor-and that's because the scooper is my neighbor's daughter (they own it).

Other than that, no-I don't tip the jar.

No...I don't tip at any of these places, it's out of control. I keep all my change in a change jar at home. I just "cashed it in" and bought myself a Michael Kors purse at Century 21...that was my "tip" to myself Chat Icon

No, i don't tip at those places.

If i was a regular customer.. maybe i would leave my random change every once in a while.
But i don't do that for the deli guy who makes me a sandwich every day either.

The tipping thing is so out of control its ridiculous - people lose sight of the fact that a tip is usually for going above and beyond the regular service, not something in addition to what is being paid anyway.

yes, as someone who works for tips. I DO NOT TIP the DD chick. I think tip jars are out of control. I have seen them in McD's. I find it tacky. JMHO

I do not tip either, give me a break, you are getting paid to do your job. Tipping is getting out of hand

My SIL works for Starbucks and she supports her two kids on her salary. She does well for working there. And the reason I dont tip is they do get a salary. Tips NORMALLY go towards those who dont get paid a salary. A waitress hourly wage is around $3 ph. so, you tip to compensate the lack of salary.

The store managers are the only ones in the store that are salaried, everyone else is hourly. The store managers are not even supposed to touch the tips! Taxes also get taken out for tips on the paychecks of the workers (although not much). I worked there for 7 years. Tips in my old store used to add on anywhere from $1-$2 more per hour worked. Tips are added up for the whole week and divided that way usually, not daily.

It is a good place to work, if you average 20 hours per quarter you qualify for medical, dental, and vision benefits. Not to mention, everyone gets either a pound of coffee or a box of tea/week for free :) + a 30% discount, and free beverages while you work!

I do tip at DD. DD was one of my sister's first jobs and most of her pay came from tips. I believe her regular pay was below minimum. Having said that .. she worked at the DD in Bay Shore where people actually sat on stools, ordered donuts and ate them there.

Actually - I'm a sucker, I tip everywhere when i get good service.

i worked at DD when i was 16 and i was very much on the books. i was always excited when someone threw change in the tip cup, but i was 16 so any extra money was huge to me.

i don't tip at any of those places. i think it's ridiculous. tipping in general is out of control.

I don't b/c they make an hourly salary. It's not like a waiter where they make $2 and change an hour and the tip is part of the salary.

No, I don't tip and I think there shouldn't be a tip jar. DD and Starbucks employees get more than $3 a hour. Servers at restaurants only $3 plus tips. Also from their tips they must 'tip out' busboys, bartenders, hostesses (depends on the restaurant).

Tipping is so out of control.

I agree.
It's so annoying. I think tip jars are super tacky!
