When are you going?

My only concern with the milk would be it getting too hot sitting in a cargo hold somewhere? Or maybe that type of milk doesn't spoil if it gets really hot?

August.

That was my one concern about sending the milk also.

Yeah I dunno if I would do that..you don't want him to get sick from drinking it. I would email Horizon and ask them if it would be okay in extreme temperatures just to ease your mind!

My crazy mother was going to call Fedex to see how they ship their things - and the temp. it will be shipped in. And - then she wants to inquire about shipping in a cooler type thing. The woman is nuts - you have no idea what I'm dealing with over here! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think the only answer is for Diana to stuff an entire suitcase full of milk and bring it as a carry-on.

Unless you ship it with dry ice, it's going to be in a hot compartment on an airplane. Say you are going for a week, 2 milks a day, so that's 14 milks. Just stuff them in your carry on!

That's what she wants to do.

I'll wait and see what Fedex tells her - thanks for the help.

Re: Tips for traveling to Italy with a 13 month old?

You could get shelf-stable milk in Europe (Parmalat, for example) long before it was available here in the US. So you won't have any problems with that.

We are going to Spain and my Ped. wants Ale to get a Hep A shot before we go so you might want to look into that with your pediatrician.

As far as food -- I wouldn't bother bringing anything, or toys either - it is a PITA to transport stuff not only to the airport but esp. if you are moving around. They have bread, water, meatballs, pasta, cheese -- everything a good little Itlian boy could want!! And usually much better than here anyway (less preservatives and all that crappola).

When we travel with Ale we bring like 2 small toys for the plane and that's it. If she needs entertainment, we give her magazines and she has a ball! Besides you may want to pick up some neat Italian toys - I love collecting toys for Ale from all over the world!

Re: Tips for traveling to Italy with a 13 month old?

I just got back from Italy with my ds who is 23 months.... The plane ride there will not be a problem becuase more than likley it is all night flying and he will sleep..... I did the same thing and shipped the diapers, wipes, shampoo, creams, vaseline and a bunch of other stuff to my grandmothers house.... It cost about $100.00 to ship and took about a week and a half.... Don't bother shipping milk, it took us 4 different parmalat milks but my son finally found one that he loved....

I also agree with pp that it is easier to use diapers on the plane.... i was lucky and he only did # 1 on the plane so I layed him on the seats and changed him....

Have a great time....

I was just there and you CAN get milk there, but the EURO is insane so You wind up paying more for it...but this may be better than shipping it.

Florence was awesome. There are many stores to dip in and out of if you are hot.

Cafe Verrazano is by far the best place for lunch.

Also, dont plan on climbing the Duomo with Jack. It is 463 windly stairs to the top

Re: Tips for traveling to Italy with a 13 month old?

Oh Diana I hope you all have a fabulous time - Lucky!!!! You all will have a great time in Florence - it is an amazing city - I studied there for 6 weeks when I was an art history major in college. There were so many families walking around (in fact I saw Madonna and her daughter when I was there). Anything you want to know about feel free to ask me I am happy to try and help.

One thing you might want to ask your ped about is eating - what is safe etc - Some drs tell you not to eat fruit without peeling first, lettuce etc since it is washed in local water, drinks with ice - so you might want to ask your ped about that just in case.

It is easy to get great food - pasta, meatballs, pizzas etc so Jack should be well fed. - And of course there is the gelato

A lot of places won't have AC (museums, restaurants etc) so make sure you bring cool clothes with you when I was there in June/July it was in the upper 90's, and a few days in the 100's. If you get sometime San Gimignano is a great place to visit. http://www.sangimignano.com/sghomei.htm

Thats not relevent in Europe, its not a country that has problems with its water systems. You can eat and drink whatever the locals eat.

(not meant to sound the way it does) but this is the 21st Century, its not the old country anymore, its a modern country these days.

I understand what you are saying - but I know the drs here still recommend that you drink bottle water and what I posted above - it's not that the water isn't safe - it definitely is - but b.c they have different bacteria in the water that we are not used to and can make some sick. While it might not affect an adult (I actually got very sick from eating something that was washed with water when I was there and was told that was what it was from) but a young child might have an issue.

I was going to add the Boboli Gardens at the Pitti Palace are amazing and that might be an interesting activity to do with Jack.

For the 100th time (and if you didn't read my responses from above) - I am shipping it for MY convenience. I want to bring it with me on tours - and I want to have it for me at hand. The room only has a minibar - so I want to be able to give Jack milk first thing in the morning when he wakes up without having to think about it. I OBVIOUSLY know that they have milk in Italy - but I am bringing a few containers with me to make MY life easier!

I can't wait!!!!!!!! You girls are getting me so excited now. I have really been dreading this for a long time bc I didn't want to think about how he would be on a plane for so long - but - I'll just get through it and hopefully have an amazing time!

My mom got us a suite too so we don't need to go to bed when he does - which I'm also excited about! Chat Icon

Al Italia

No bashing over here - my mom wants me to get some hardcore stuff for Jack from the ped. I told her that tylenol or motrin will be just fine Chat Icon Chat Icon
