typical vs/ atypical 2 year old behavior
*sigh* i'll try to keep this short.
josh has some sensory issues and i struggle with trying to figure out what is typical 2 year old behavior and what is b/c of his sensory issues.
he is very active and lately has been acting "silly" making up words (he can have full normal conversations), running around like a mad man and screaming. he hasn't been sleeping well AND has a new baby brother so i'm wondering if this is a normal 2 year old reaction to everything or if he is truely 'hyper' b/c of needing more sensory input. when i do more sensory activities with him it just seems to get worse, so i just don't know what to do.
so i was wondering if you could tell me if your 2 year olds seem like monkeys on speed (for lack of a better way to put it) through out of the day. or if maybe you could tell me what they are like so i can maybe gage if my ds' behavior is totally off or normal. the thing is he can sit for 30-60 min. activities too, so i just don't know.
THANKS!

Re: typical vs/ atypical 2 year old behavior
Unfortunately, the only way to truly tease out atypical vs. typical behavior is through evaluations.... With young children, it is hard to remotely discuss behavior and guess if its based on the kooky antics of a toddler, or indicative of a skill deficit or set of deficits - know what I mean?
If you have concerns, you really should give yourself peace of mind in a more quantitative way

I am soooo glad I saw this post! DS has gotten hyper periods as well over the past couple of weeks. He is especially hyper at night after his bath before bed...he loves to jump on the bed. But he also sings and dances throughout the day and sometimes will sometimes yell.
but like you said, other times he will sit there and do puzzles and read books. Over the weekend we took him to Thomas the Train at Nassau Coliseum and he sat through the whole thing and yesterday DH took him to his first movie and again he sat through the whole thing.
I would imagine it's normal toddler behavior. I know my mom said I was super hyper when I was younger and I remember it more so as I got older.

Re: typical vs/ atypical 2 year old behavior
There are times throughout the day when Jack is really hyper, right before bed actually. About an hour before he runs around like a little monkey. I think he has to burn off all of his energy before bed. He just gets really silly. But the rest of the day he is a normal 2 year old boy. Focuses when he should - and runs around when he should (outside, park, etc)
