Ugh, angry overcharged
We went out to dinner last night and I just reviewed my Chase account. Our total bill was slightly less than $100.00.
We left a very nice tip in cash (higher than average since it was NYE).
My Chase account is reflecting a higher charge.
Do you think they charged me someone else's bill or added on the tip because of NYE?
I'm annoyed and of course will call Chase.....
ETA: Chase was great, but I first need to dispute it with the restaurant.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
Most restaurants overcharge the card initially because they don't know if you will add the tip. they usually settle the correct charge the next day.

I've never experienced that and my receipt reflects differently.
If anything, I have noticed the tip doesn't show up for a few days.

Was your party large? Sometimes they add an automatic tip if you have a certain number of people. But they should point that out to you ahead if time. I'd def call the restaurant and question it. Did you keep your customer copy?

No. It was me and DH. AND I put the cash tip in with my card when I paid the waiter.
Nothing was pointed out ahead of time.
I do have my receipt.
By the time we left it was packed and he was juggling several large parties which makes me think it was someone else's check. But at the same time, why would my customer copy receipt show something different, KWIM?

Wouldn't you have to write in tip under the bill amount if you wsnted yo charge it?( dotted line under total) then sign? That's sneaky & wrong ..curious how much did they charge for tip? 20%?

This.
I drew a line through there, and added the total at the end. If this is really a "tip" they got almost $50.00 out of us between both.
Hence why I'm pissed!
They open at 11 so I'm calling.
ETA: Chase was great and said if they give a hard time to call them back and they will assist.

This. Or the opposite
It is a pending charge, right? Which in reality is just a hold.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
Nothing is "pending".
It was most recent activity and was already deducted from my account.
I have a Master's degree and don't make that much an hour.
No way am I paying that for an hour wait service, NYE or not.
Sorry, but I don't see the "humor" in this.
Imagine the # of people who may not check their account?

I guess I just don't feel it was malicious. It was probably a mistake, if it was, and it will be corrected.
Once I got Outback to go, literally, it was less than $20, Outback accidentally charged my card $100. They literally swapped checks and cards. It was a mistake, an accident, and it was fixed.
I'm sure yours was too

If it was a mistake?
Really?
I love this site.
And yes, I am sure it will be fixed, but it's aggravation I have to go through in the meantime.
I guess I don't "get" why people are so leisurely about their money, especially with the most recent thing with Target.

I honestly don't understand your hostility. I said the same thing has happened to me in the past, and it was an ERROR and it was corrected. As I said earlier, I'm sure it will be in your case as well. Of course it is aggravating.

Trust me, I'm not being "hostile".
And I just tried calling and the restaurant is closed today.
I left a message and I will call back.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
Most restaurants do this. The card gets charged more then it's settled the next day once they know if the tip when on or not. It's automatic % in the system. They don't key in a random amount. When the next business day occurs they settle the charge at the appropriate amount. It's done all the time.

Ugh, angry overcharged
I would be annoyed as well and think it was terrible that IF they were taking advantage, it's awful considering it's NYE..I'm sorry this happened to you and hope that the restaurant makes this right...if not, Chase will...but it is annoying and I would be annoyed having to jump through all of the hoops..it's happened to us, too, and luckily, the restaurant was able to fix it over the phone...

Again, I've never experienced this so it's news to me.
And on a random note (and I'm sure there's been threads about this before!), but what if you had a sucky waiter/waitress and didn't want to tip?
Now are they automatically charging you? (And I'm not talking about where they add a percentage onto the bill.....I'm talking w/o your consent).
FWIW, this may not even be a "tip" either but I am seriously really curious now about the tipping thing.

I agree. It happened a few times to us too! After the day or two the charge matched the receipt though! Just give them one business day, before you drive yourself crazy!

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
It's basically to make sure you have enough money in your account to cover the bill and a tip if you chose to add it. It's to hold that aside. After they see you didn't tip on the card the correct amount gets charged.

Sounds like just a mistake to me. If they had actually added the tip into the bill then that would have been reflected on your receipt. As frustrating as it is, I am certain it will be fixed tomorrow.

I actually have never had this happen, they always charge the bill amount and the tip gets added after...

Ugh, angry overcharged
It is a holiday. When card was swiped, a percentage gets added. It is deducted from your account. To make sure you do not spend it somewhere else. Funds will be released in 3 business days.

Me either
When they take my receipt up to the register, they should only be charging me the amount I agreed upon.

Huh?
I don't see anything in the response you referred to to that would merit this response.
She's making a logical suggestion based on her experience.
No one is saying anything about being "leisurely." That would be telling you to ignore it. You've done all you can today and obviously you'll continue to follow up. Whether it was a mistake or theft, Chase will take care of it. Try to put it out of your head for the rest of the day since there is nothing else you can do for the moment.

If this is true its the.most ridiculous thing I've ever herd & would not go to this restaurant again. How can they control where you spend your $

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I eat out 3-4x per week. Almost every restaurant I go to does this. It's very common. Once the account is settled, the correct amount will be reflected automatically. When I use a credit card, the amount is just pending until the account is settled. With a debit card, the check amount plus the percentage comes out of my account until the restaurant settles their account with the actual tip. It is a holiday so it will probably take an extra day.
