I don't understand the posts that say this is a common practice. I use my debit card for almost everything-and dine out on a regular basis-and have never* had this happen.
I know this is a common practice at hotels, but not at restaurants.
*I was once charged double my owed amount at a restaurant; returning the funds to my account took nearly a week.
I think it depends on the bank/card that is used.
And usually it does take like 5-7 days to have it fixed.

Is it really common practice for entities to overcharge when a debit card is used?
(I don't mean this in a snarky fashion. I'm seriously curious because I don't have this happen.)

When I had an account through Washington Mutual years ago they did in fact do this.
No clue what banks do it now.
ETA: I was mostly commenting on how if it was a mistake, it would be taken care of

I'm still skeptical guys, sorry.
It sounds ludicrous to me.
I also always buy gas on my debit and am not "overcharged".
Sorry, I am not convinced with this.
I will wait it out and see what happens and report back.
You have never been over charged when you buy gas on your card?
I get gas once or twice a week , I have been over charged every single time...once or twice a week for as far back as I can remember. Maybe you do not see it ( don't check your account when it occurs?). I thought it was standard practice ....by restaurants, gas stations and such?
side note...people are just trying to tell you to calm down and hope for the best and get it resolved once the holiday is over and you are being really testy, you may not see it but your responses are kinda terse and rude when everyone's just trying to ease your mind.
Even if it was a mistake...You know Chase will correct it, and it sounds like it wasn't more than a $20-$30 mistake so try to believe all will be fixed tomorrow. I am SURE it will be one way or the other. Did you have to do some extra work? Yeah...its annoying but we wouldn't know 'easy' if we didn't know 'hard'
ITA almost word for word. I realize you may be stressed, but you are being hostile to the people telling you it's okay. If you don't see the restaurant correcting it in a day or two, Chase will. It will be okay, annoying, but okay.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I never charge on my debit card but it usually takes a day or two for the charge to actually hit my credit card. The pending charge is often different than the actual charge. I would think your bank account would have the charge as pending.
I would wait at least a day or so to see what the charge is. I sometimes see 2-3 charges from the same restaurant as pending. The first few times, I planned to call the restaurant or hotel but it usually is corrected.

LOL A couple of us posted links, but I think they got lost in the shuffle. I just don't see why this is such a big debate--it's a fact that restaurants do it!

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I'm still stuck on people thinking I'm being "hostile" because I'm "concerned" I was overcharged.
Yeah, I'm sure it will be fixed, but I am still annoyed that the restaurant did this to begin with. Especially with what's going on lately with people's account #s getting stolen in general, KWIM?
I should bookmark this because I bet every single one of those people saying that about ME will be back with some issue DTR and will respond the same (not) hostile way.
Again, gotta love LIF for this reason alone.

It's a debate because it's NOT a fact that EVERY debit card or restaurant does this.
ETA - That Visa link specifically says an establishment should only charge for the EXACT amount and NOT overestimate on a customers bill. It goes on to say that Visa doesn't even allow it. Therefore, any restaurant that is taking it upon themselves to add a tip is in the wrong and as such, a customer has EVERY right to complain.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
To add onto that, I find it interesting that when I spoke to 2 actual representatives from Chase yesterday (not two people from LIF thinking they work for Chase), they told me the same thing----that the restaurant should have only charged what was on the bill.
But whatevs.

Omg.... Think about it. Bill comes. You hand over cc. Cc is swiped. Slip comes for you to sign and either leave tip or not. If you do leave tip...your card is not swiped again. You are already heading home with card in hand. How would server get tip? Welllllll...... When card is swiped that one time, an authorization and hold is put on it for an amount larger then your bill. If the money is needed, great, it is there. If not, no issue, funds will be released. Your cc statement never reads a charge for bill amount and a separate charge for tip...it is all the same.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I know nothing about pending charges and actual charges, but I did go to a swanky bar in Manhattan when I was younger and charged a round of drinks but left the tip in cash. I indicated such on the receipt but that bartender took it upon himself to enter a 20% tip on top of the cash that was left. I was mad, but couldn't ever get a person on the phone and chalked it up to a place I would never go again. Now, if that happened, I wouldn't let it go so easily. Good luck! I hope that it works out for you!

I don't see how this could be accurate at all. I am not denying that some places will over charge and then adjust, but I have never seen a pending charge from a restaurant on my cc be more than my bill. It is always my bill and then will be adjusted if I tip on my cc. I understand that the card is only swiped once, but they are able to make adjustments to it. Obviously they aren't going to guess the tip correctly if they overcharge, so they would still have to make an adjustment without swiping it again.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
This does happen unfortunately all the time. When I go out to eat I write $0 in the tip line and give them a cash tip .
This way the only amount they are charging me is the exact dollar amount of the check.

It happens at every restaurant. When they swipe your card it adds a potential "tip" in case you decide to tip using your card. Just in case when they go back and settle the final charge after you sign the bill you do not have enough in the account they wont get screwed
No it doesn't. I eat out a lot and always use my debit card and I have NEVER had this happen to me. If anything, I see the actual bill amount right away in my checking account under "pending" and then when it posts the amount reflects any tip I've added. I've never heard of being of charged more than you spent anywhere when using a debit.
I'd be on the phone with that restaurant right away.
I have to agree with this. I always use my debit card when out to eat and to buy gas and this has never happened to me, ever. I'm talking in all the years I've had a bank account this was never an issue. Plus, I used to work in a restaurant and we would run the card for the amount of the bill then later go back in and adjust it with the tip amount. Maybe it depends on the bank but I'd think the charge would go through and if anything, your account would just be overdrawn if you didn't have enough to cover the tip.

When you leave a tip on your card you're authorizing them to go back and adjust the amount. They don't need to swipe your card again to do that and they certainly don't need to overcharge you "just in case".

You ARE being hostile. Or if not hostile, then nasty and snarky at least and I'm surprised by it. You asked people what they thought happened and they told you. Sorry you didn't like the answer. And no, it's not a fact because it's on LIF. It's a fact because it was found on several debit card distributor's websites- like the the above link directly from Visa.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I can see why they might do it at restaurants- due to the possible tip. However why do they do it at gas stations? If I buy $40 worth of gas, that's it- it's $40. Done. Why hold more?

My debit card statement actually always lists two separate charges when I tip on it.
I'll get one charge right away for the bill, and then a separate one a few days later for the tip.
I feel like I have some weird card that no one else does

I believe they do it at gas stations because if you are doing self-serve they dont' know how much you are going to buy. They need to make sure you have enough credit in your account to cover a purchase. With the price of gas, I think most gas stations will put a hold of $75-$100 on your account to make sure you can cover your purchase.

When I use my debit card at certain gas stations the hold comes through as $1. When it posts, it's the exact amount.
I've been a using a debit card for over 15 years and I've never, ever seen a pending or posted transaction for anything over what I actually spent. Never. There is just no reason for it.
I would raise holy hell if my receipt showed anything other than what I actually purchased. I wouldn't sign a debit/credit receipt that didn't reflect my actual charges.

This is exactly how it works. I worked in a restaurant many many years ago. I use my debit for everything including gas and restaurants, and have never had an authorization for more than my purchase.
