Ugh, angry overcharged
I thought this was the norm.
When they initially swipe your card, if they did just the amount for the bill and then you wrote in a tip I would guess they can't go back without your card to raise the amount. Instead, they add a percentage to cover the possible tip and adjust it to the correct amount afterward.

Same as when you go to get gas. They overcharge you and then re-adjust later.

Ugh, angry overcharged
It's a pending transaction and not a charge. Wait until you get the charge before disputing anything.

I'm still skeptical guys, sorry.
It sounds ludicrous to me.
I also always buy gas on my debit and am not "overcharged".
Sorry, I am not convinced with this.
I will wait it out and see what happens and report back.

Ugh, angry overcharged
Is it showing up as a pending charge, or a sale? If it is pending, then it is just a hold they put on your card, like others have said (same as when you make a hotel reservation, for ex), and will be adjusted once they go through the receipts. If it isn't pending, then that's a different issue, that means that they charged you the wrong amount, which was more than likely just a mistake.

Ugh, angry overcharged
It's a pending charge. This is why I never use my debit card for anything but getting cash from an ATM. Always use cash or a credit card at a restaurant. This happens all the time.

Wouldn't you have to write in tip under the bill amount if you wsnted yo charge it?( dotted line under total) then sign? That's sneaky & wrong ..curious how much did they charge for tip? 20%?
This.
I drew a line through there, and added the total at the end. If this is really a "tip" they got almost $50.00 out of us between both.
Hence why I'm pissed!
They open at 11 so I'm calling.
ETA: Chase was great and said if they give a hard time to call them back and they will assist.
Are you saying that on the total line, you added your cash tip to the amount on the bill? For example:
Your bill is $100. You give a $20 cash tip. You draw a line through the tip line on the credit card receipt but write $120 on the total line?

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
No, the bill was X, so in the spot where they ask for the tip I didn't add anything, went down and wrote the amount of the bill and then signed.

This happens all the time. When the charge is actually settled, it will be at the corrected amount.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I always understood this was common practice at restaurants. This is why you can't always use a gift card if it is too close to the amount of the bill.

Most restaurants do this. Your card is scanned and approved before you add the tip, so the credit card company will authorize for a higher amount to make sure the tip is covered, should you choose to add one. It's nothing to stress over, and the correct amount will be updated in a day or two when the amount on the signed slip clears.

I eat out 3-4x per week. Almost every restaurant I go to does this. It's very common. Once the account is settled, the correct amount will be reflected automatically. When I use a credit card, the amount is just pending until the account is settled. With a debit card, the check amount plus the percentage comes out of my account until the restaurant settles their account with the actual tip. It is a holiday so it will probably take an extra day.
Never mind, another post clarified.

I usually write cash on that line to avoid anyone writing in another amount.

Agree. This has happened to me before. I know that your initial reaction is to want to call up the restaurant, but the best thing to do here is wait until the amount goes from pending to an actual withdrawal, and to check that the actual amount is what was taken out. As of now, with the amount pending, there is no dispute.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
It happens at every restaurant. When they swipe your card it adds a potential "tip" in case you decide to tip using your card. Just in case when they go back and settle the final charge after you sign the bill you do not have enough in the account they wont get screwed

No it doesn't. I eat out a lot and always use my debit card and I have NEVER had this happen to me. If anything, I see the actual bill amount right away in my checking account under "pending" and then when it posts the amount reflects any tip I've added. I've never heard of being of charged more than you spent anywhere when using a debit.
I'd be on the phone with that restaurant right away.

You have never been over charged when you buy gas on your card?
I get gas once or twice a week , I have been over charged every single time...once or twice a week for as far back as I can remember. Maybe you do not see it ( don't check your account when it occurs?). I thought it was standard practice ....by restaurants, gas stations and such?
side note...people are just trying to tell you to calm down and hope for the best and get it resolved once the holiday is over and you are being really testy, you may not see it but your responses are kinda terse and rude when everyone's just trying to ease your mind.
Even if it was a mistake...You know Chase will correct it, and it sounds like it wasn't more than a $20-$30 mistake so try to believe all will be fixed tomorrow. I am SURE it will be one way or the other. Did you have to do some extra work? Yeah...its annoying but we wouldn't know 'easy' if we didn't know 'hard'

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
I don't understand the posts that say this is a common practice. I use my debit card for almost everything-and dine out on a regular basis-and have never* had this happen.
I know this is a common practice at hotels, but not at restaurants.
*I was once charged double my owed amount at a restaurant; returning the funds to my account took nearly a week.
