Omg.... Think about it. Bill comes. You hand over cc. Cc is swiped. Slip comes for you to sign and either leave tip or not. If you do leave tip...your card is not swiped again. You are already heading home with card in hand. How would server get tip? Welllllll...... When card is swiped that one time, an authorization and hold is put on it for an amount larger then your bill. If the money is needed, great, it is there. If not, no issue, funds will be released. Your cc statement never reads a charge for bill amount and a separate charge for tip...it is all the same.
When you leave a tip on your card you're authorizing them to go back and adjust the amount. They don't need to swipe your card again to do that and they certainly don't need to overcharge you "just in case".
Right. After you leave and a server goes back to the computer, they go to settle the bill and close your table out. At that time they add the tip. I have, though had pre-authorizations for more than the bill be taken out of my card though....

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
i have had this happen to me before. It has happened at a few select restaurants for the reasons people have said above.
It will correct itself in 2 days or so. Just be sure to check.

Most restaurants do this. The card gets charged more then it's settled the next day once they know if the tip when on or not. It's automatic % in the system. They don't key in a random amount. When the next business day occurs they settle the charge at the appropriate amount. It's done all the time.
I actually have never had this happen, they always charge the bill amount and the tip gets added after...
This! and we eat out ALOT...My card gets charged the bill amount right way and the amount changes on my banks end a few days later when the restaurant settles all their CC receipts to reflect the gratuity written in.

This. I have never ever been charged more, ever. And we eat out alot. And as far as gas, I get charged $1 and after a day or so the rest gets charged. I am lost when some of you say this is normal. Maybe I am just lucky.

So did you call today and get an answer?
Well, I was actually at this place called work today, imagine that, so I didn't have time to feed into the drama of a select few on here.
In any event, I did call the restaurant and they are closed today due to the weather.
Higher amount remains the same though, withdrawn from my account.

Ugh, angry overcharged
I didn't read through all the comments but I have two accounts. Capital One always overcharges me for everything and adjusts later and my credit union never does. One of many reasons why I want to close my Cap 1 account. I obsessively check both my accounts and its just so frustrating to me that they do that. I don't know if that's the case here but I've gotten into a few arguments about charges because they weren't "pending" they were withdrawn and then a few days later my balance was different.

How can you say this isn't snarky?
I think everyone has been pretty much sharing their thoughts and experiences...maybe theyre not what you expected, but IDK why it requires the snark

I have to agree. Your responses on this thread (on more than one occasion) have been unnecessarily rude and uncalled for. If you don't want peoples' opinions, then you should not post on a message board that exists for people to answer questions and share their thoughts and opinions. In addition, many people have gone out of their way to post links from various companies to help you better understand the situation you are in, and it seems that rather than thanking people for their help, you are more content with throwing out these rude comments. The poster who asked if you had resolved the issue/called today was likely genuinely concerned about your situation, to the point where they reached out to you to check in.

Why are you being so nasty to people? I'm sorry that we wasted time checking in with your issue to have you be rude over and over again. Sarcasm does not read well over the net if that is your intent.

Lol, people are trying to help you, you do realize that right? As I have a chase account, all charges are pending until they receive the signed copy a couple of days later but no longer then 5. Yes the amount is deducted at the transaction but once the final comes in, its adjusted. If its that serious, you can request a copy of signed slip. But this is why the bank works for you if needed. Chances are if the restaurant does not fix, chase will write off the difference. As for people getting cards stolen and store breachers, this happens too often as credit security in general sucks as anybody can get your number and buy crap. I check my account daily for peace of mind. I hope peoples comments help as its the trurth.

How can you read this back to yourself and not think you are not being nasty? I was genuinely curious, no need to be rude.
I understand you are pissed and frustrated but no need to be rude to people you don't even know!
I have been on LIW for over a year and even majorly stressed brides aren't as nasty and rude as you.

Re: Ugh, angry overcharged
First of all, my last comment wasn't directed at you Pinksicles.
I am responding to the ridiculousness of again, a select few on here who based on THEIR history (even way before this thread) are generally looking to stir up negativity, not that they are "generally interested and concerned" with what my outcome is.
Also, I'm an adult and I don't need a lecture, especially by some of you who probably aren't even aware of what or who I am referring to.
Yes, I agree what I last posted was snarky, but this thread itself has also gotten completely out of hand even before "I" made my comment.
Other posters already posted it's like the pot calling the kettle black around here with the comments going on for pages, arguing who is right or who is wrong.
I also love how people come out to lecture me that I am being snarky, rude, etc. but how is THAT not doing the same exact thing?

Ugh, angry overcharged
I think you need to go back and read the first page of this thread and you will see why you were called hostile. You seem completely oblivious to it each and every time you are snotty and rude, and flip it around on everyone else.

There's a difference IMO of being "hostile" and not agreeing with an explanation.
I gather this is the "flipping" you are referring to.
Also, you are another perfect example right here of coming out of the woodwork to stir the pot!
Let me guess: your next response will be "don't post on a public message board if you don't like the responses".

And you may not agree with an explanation. But the truth is, it has happened to some of us here.
Whatever the case. I'm sure you will get the money back. Banks are very good with that.

I can see why they might do it at restaurants- due to the possible tip. However why do they do it at gas stations? If I buy $40 worth of gas, that's it- it's $40. Done. Why hold more?
Some people don't ask for a specific amount of gas. The station near my house is full serve only. The attendant puts the card in at the pump. If my DH has his work truck and he says "fill it" when his tank is empty it is $95, if i say"fill it" with my Prius it's $29. That's a big difference and how would the attendant know? With debit cards people can double dip and I'm sure they do and businesses get screwed. If you ask for a specific amount of gas it's very cut and dry. I guess some stations are willing to chance it with $1 charge but others are not

I was thinking that. You're replies here are not typical of you. And I was pretty surprised by them.
I don't think anyone thinks you're a rotten, horrible person. Just hostile I kid I kid!

Actually no. The one about you not seeing the humor...when no one was laughing. The one about you having a masters which wasn't even relevant, and whatever else you said. I post here often, so I didn't come out of the "woodwork". You are hostile a lot on here, and I am sure it sucks to be called that, but maybe you should read what you write. You come off as having a huge chip, and if that's not you....then.....
