Unexplained fever?
I just had to pick DS up from daycare because he ahd a 102 fever (I'm assuming that closer to 101 since they take it under the arm). He's definitely very warm and flushed, although that was also because he hadn't yet napped.
He has no other symptoms, and hasn't had any all week. He was totally fine this morning. His teacher said he wasn't "himself" today, I could see when I picked him up he was definitely a bit clingy and subdued.
I gave him tylenol and will of course keep an eye on him (and probably keep him home tomorrow just in case), but other than an ear infection is there something I should be looking out for? Maybe fifths?
ETA question:
If his fever is gone by tonight (and still gone in the morning), should I keep him home anyway, or bring him to daycare tomorrow?

Re: Unexplained fever?
Could be an ear infection, this has happened with both girls. I would get him checked if it is really 102.

I have to re-check him (DH does actually) when he wakes from his nap but after being asleep for a few minutes he already seemed cooler.

Re: Unexplained fever?
DD had this last Tuesday/Wednesday...fever until the Tylenol kicked in, then back when it wore off. We were worried about a UTI since she has a history. Starting on Thursday, she got a nasty cold that she's still battling (and now the stomach virus too )
Hopefully his body is just fighting off something and is successful so it doesn't turn into a cold, etc.

Re: Unexplained fever?
It could be coxsackie, Roseola, Fifth's,... they all can start with a fever and then develop into a rash.

Re: Unexplained fever?
Was it 102 under the arm ? If so that means it would be higher if taken rectally usually ....
Sounds like it could be early ear infection, but keep an eye out for rash since it seems like fifths is going around

Oh crap I had it backwards I thought under the arm was higher than rectal temps. Oops.
I will definitely watch out for rash... thanks everyone

Re: Unexplained fever?
Actually took DS to the ped this morning w/ fever and congestion - yet ANOTHER ear infection.
But ditto on checking for a rash, that was the first thing they asked me this morning, they've seen quite a few cases of fifths.

Re: Unexplained fever?
If it was 102 under the arm, it's probably higher. Rectal is the most accurate and is generaly a degree or so higher than any other method.
My DD tends to get random unexplained fevers every now and then. They last a few days and just go away. They don't seem to bother her. It's probably just a virus of some sort. I've always brought her to the ped, but they never find anything. One lasted 6 days and we brought her back after the 5th day and they ran some tests, nothing.

Re: Unexplained fever?
Our day care wants all kids to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. I follow it to the letter.

Re: Unexplained fever?
24 hours after the fever breaks is when I send him in.
Same thing with 3 or more loose stools. I keep him home for 24 hours after the last loose stool.

Re: Unexplained fever?
The only time that ever happened to DS was when he had roseola. He had a fever for a couple of days before the rash appeared. Hopefully he'll be OK tomorrow

Re: Unexplained fever?
this happened yesterday. i was called to pick up DS with a 102.4 fever. brought him to the doctor and he had 103. no ear infection, nothing in the urine. ive just been giving him tylenol and his temp went down this morning but just went up to 101.3. doctor said to keep an eye on the fever to make sure it doesnt spike again. he also said some babies just run high fevers.

Re: Unexplained fever?
I just went through this with my youngest. Took him to the doc on Tuesday and he has an ear infection in the left ear.
