Universal Studios Orlando

Has anyone taken a vacation to Orlando and just went to Universal Stuidios and Sea World and not do Disney?

Where did you stay? I was thinking about the Universal's Loews Portofino Bay Hotel any Recs?

Re: Universal Studios Orlando

I am going to Orlando in less than 2 weeks and am not going to Disney. DS is only 2 so too young to appreciate it.

We will likely be doing Seaworld, Busch Gardens, and Universal. That's plenty to do!

As for hotels, I heard fantastic things about the JW Marriot Resort at Grande Lakes (1o mins from Universal) and would stay there but got a nice timeshare deal from a friend so am staying there instead.

I stayed at the Portofino about 10 years ago. It was very nice. We just went for a long weekend and did Universal. The nice thing about staying at a Universal hotel is that if you show your room key, you go to the front of the line. It's kind of like Disney's fast pass. However, I heard this doesn't apply to the Harry Potter area.

I recently went a few months ago and it was beautiful. The only thing is request a hotel room on the side of the dock where the boat comes, especially if you have kids. We were on the other side of the water and could see the boat and would run to make it!

After all the walking you do at Universal I didn't feel like walking the extra distance.

We were able to go to Harry Potter for an hour in the morning before anyone else. That made a huge difference because later on in the day it gets very crowded.

We went a few years ago. They had an admission package; 4 or 5 days at Universal, unlimited in/out for something like 80 bucks total. A lot cheaper than Disney's 80+ PER DAY.

We had a great time. We didn't even goto Seaworld or anything. We spent 1 day in the 'regular universal studios' and then 1 day at the 'islands of adventure'. Then went back a third day and went on the best rides from each park again.

That package was before the Harry Potter rides though, so I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of them.
