Update from Ped visit last night... (rash related)
First off, James is 4.5 months and 16 pounds, 10 ounces and 27.5 inches long.
The doctor is stumped as to what could be causing the rash. I mentioned that I think it migh tbe from the dairy in the formula and he told me that the formula is dairy-free, which it isn't, and I went back and forth with him for a while - yes it is, no it isn't, yes it is, no it isn't...
Bottom line - we're keeping him on the formula until we see the allergist next week and we have to make an appointment with a pediactric dermatologist (Dr. Krystal - anyone have any experience with him/her?) We also have to give him .75 teaspoon on Benedryl 4x a day to control his intense itching since topical creams have no effect. Personally, I feel that .75 is a very large dose, so I only gave hin .5 this morning and it knocked him out within 10 minutes.
We also started peas last night - he seemed to like them, but he wasn't eating them as voraciously as he ate the oatmeal (which we're going to try again after the allergist as well)
So - I don't have any answers, but we're working on getting to the bottom of it.

PUPPS (according to what I have read) has no effect whatsoever on the baby
(thanks for the hugs!)

Re: Update from Ped visit last night... (rash related)
Hopefully the allergist will tell you more. It is amazing at how some peds are so uneducated regarding allergies.
I had problems with my ped and Ryan's Peanut/Egg allergy. Against his advice I sought out a consultation with a pediatric allergist (Dr. Steven Weiss in Syosset who I highly recommend) and was able to learn so much more about the allergy. And really lay out a great plan for the care of his allergy long term.
I hope you find some answers!
I am sorry to say I don't know the whole story. But have you thought about soaps, lotions, detergents, etc you are using?

Hi Jess! We've changed EVERYTHING possible to fragrance/dye free and he's still breaking out. It comes and goes in severity, but it's pretty much consistently visible. There has to be *something* that's triggering it...
I'm really hoping and praying that the allergist will be able to help us - it's killing me to see James scratching his skin off!

Alimentum
My son has a severe milk protein/soy allergy. We tried every formula out there. When the dr. switched him to Alimentum, his symptoms were 100 times worse. He had the worst reaction to it. Including a rash. He never had a rash on any of the other formulas. He had been taking Nutramigen before the switch to Alimentum. Most of his symptoms had disappeared while using it except for the blood in the stool. He is now on Elecare... I hope the allergist can figure out what is causing it and he feels better soon.

I don't know much about allergies, but what about YOUR clothes, lotions, etc? Do you wash all of your stuff in the same free/clear detergent? Maybe when you hold him something on you triggers it? Again, I have no clue really about allergies and how they are triggered but thought i'd throw that out there... although i'm sure you already thought of it!
I hope the allergist can help your little guy!

Yep - all of our stuff gets washed in free & clear as well. I've even given up wearing perfume and try to use the mildest soaps/body washes for DH and I as well.
Rusty - I had mentioned Elecare and the doc just brushed me off saying that it was for SEVERE severe allergies. I was like Ummmmm - have you seen my child?

Have they tested his stools for blood? I would definitely think that it is the formula causing his problems. Thank goodness my pedi was on top of things with the allergy. He said DS is the worst he has seen in a long time. I hope you and your son find some relief soon...

Re: Update from Ped visit last night... (rash related)
Can I ask you something, please I hope you don't mind me asking. But what age did he start solids? What has he had so far? Many peds recommend starting solids at 6 mths for reasons like this, reactions, intolerance, etc.
Maybe there is a reason you are doing solids at 4.5 mths but I just wondered if he is having reactions, why not just give formula and no solids for a while longer when many babies don't even start solids until 6 mths or later? Also, if he is having reactions, I personally feel starting ANY new food is definitely not going to help the situation at all. I am surprised your ped would even suggest starting new foods in light of your child's current reaction to something right now. The more foods you add to the mix, the less chance you have of figuring out what is causing the reactions. At least if you eliminate all foods, you can find a formula that he isn't allergic too and then take it from there.
Oatmeal is linked to wheat and it is a higher likeliness of being an allergen as is barley. Peas, according to www.wholesomebabyfood.com, are also more likely an allergen. I never knew this!
http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/allergy.htm On a side note, you asked about Dr. Krystal, we did not see him but his associate Dr. Hayman who is a very nice man, high rec.

Sorry hun, I wish there was an easy answer. Maybe the Ped Derm will help. I don't think I heard of Dr Krystal, but Mason goes to a Ped Derm not to far from LIJ in Queens. I can't think of his name right now, but I love him. He's so good with Mason. You know we've been seeing him b/c of the hermangomia. Hope things get better!

Do you give him RTF Almientium or the powder. My Dr mentioned that the powder can sometimes give kids issues but not the RTF, there is something in the powder that is not in the RTF, can't remember what exactly.

Ronan has pretty bad eczema as well and we know it is food related. However a scratch test didn't show anything...except beef once-next time it was negative. But I notice he does get patched when he gets bananna and yesterday got salmon fo rthe first time and got a few rashes so sometimes you just need to pay really close attention.
A quick search on Wiki gave me this:
"Milk avoidance and replacement for infants Since milk protein may be transferred from a breastfeeding mother to an allergic infant, lactating mothers are put on a dairy elimination diet. For formula fed infants, milk substitute formulas are used to provide a complete source of nutrition. Milk substitutes include soy based formulas, hypoallergenic formulas based on partially or extensively hydrolyzed protein (such as Nutramigen, Alimentum, and Pregestimil), and free amino acid-based formulas (such as Neocate, EleCare, and Nutramigen AA).
Soy based formula does have a risk of allergic sensitivity, as some infants who are allergic to milk may also be allergic to soy.
Hydrolyzed formulas come in partially hydrolyzed and extensively hydrolyzed varieties. Partially hydrolyzed formulas (PHFs) are characterized by a larger proportion of long chain peptides and are considered more palatable. However, they are intended for milder cases and are not considered suitable for treatment of moderate to severe milk allergy or intolerance. Extensively hydrolyzed formulas (EHFs) are comprised of proteins that have been largely broken down into free amino acids and short peptides. Casein and whey are the most commonly used sources of protein in hydrolyzed formulas because of their high nutritional quality and their amino acid composition.
Non-milk derived amino acid-based formulas, also known as elemental formulas, are suitable for the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe milk allergy in infants that exhibit allergic reactions to partially and extensively hydrolyzed formulas."
Declan could not handle regular Nutramigen and had to be put on Amino acid formula. Shame on your Dr! Regular Nutramigen is a partially hydrolized formula which means it has the milk proteins broken down but they still exist. I hope you get some answers
