(UPDATE) My wisdom tooth just chipped out of nowhere!
Could this be due to lack of calcium this early in my pregnancy? I'm 8w4d.
What could I do at this point? Me tooth doesn't actually hurt but it's annoying because the peice that chipped off is sharp and rubbing against my gum.
UPDATE: I called my dentist this afternoon and left a message. The dentist just called me a little while ago and said he would like to see me tomorrow. I explained I'm pregnant, he said in that case he would like me to speak with my doctor and ask if it's okay to take XRays and get a shot. I don't feel safe with this at all especially since I'm still in my 1st trimester. I know my doctor and she is very to the book so I don't think she will allow this. I made my dentist aware that I am still in the crucial time of pregnancy, he said but you can't leave your tooth the way it is. My tooth doesn't hurt though, it needs to be smoothed out or something because it's rubbing against my gum and irritating it.
From what I've heard in the past, pregnant women can not get a shot of novacain or XRays taken, is this true? I plan on calling my OB tomorrow to see what she suggests but I have a gut feeling she will advise me to wait until after my 1st trimester which is the end of November for me.

Schedule an appointment with your dentist... He'll tell you what to do. Mine chipped years ago, and I just let it go. It smoothed out, and my dentist told me that it was fine.

Re: My wisdom tooth just chipped out of nowhere!
My back tooth (no wisdom teeth for me) cracked off when I was about 12 weeks. Weird! I went to the dentist refused xrays- even though they said it was safe if they double drapped me and he reshaped it. He said it should last for the remainder of my pregnancy and then after I give birth he will fix it better.

Re: My wisdom tooth just chipped out of nowhere!
Since I got my BFP my teeth have been falling out of my head. I got my BFP on a Wed. that Fri. the 1st tooth broke, week 16 the 2nd tooth- these resulted in 2 root canals Last week (wk 23) #3-the whole top surface of my back molar cracked off- I'm just not in any mood to deal with the dentist again

Well it looks like chipped teeth is the norm in pregnancy, great! Pretty soon, I'm going to have no teeth left!

Re: (UPDATE) My wisdom tooth just chipped out of nowhere!
I had a chipped tooth during my last pregnancy. My dr gave me the ok for an xray (they use double the lead protection on preggos) and for novocaine without epinephrine.
I was in my second trimester though. If your tooth isn't hurting you, I'd smooth it down and wait a few weeks for a repair.

I've always continued my dental work during pregnancy, but opted against x-rays. I did however get novociane, without the epinephrine, because my OB said that can cross the placenta. Other than that, I got a wisdom tooth out and they finsihed up an implant all while I was PG.

if it were me I'd wait a few weeks.
there is also the possibliity, if you have, mercury (silver amalgam) fillings for something to chip off and if it gets in your system, not worth the risk to me...

You girls are great, thank you so much! I'm definitely going to hold off a few more weeks, at least until my first trimester is over which is about 5 more weeks from now.
Being my tooth doesn't bother me I'm not rushing to the dentist. I do not feel comfortable having anything done at the dentist until my first trimester is officially over.
Thanks so much for all your advice

Re: (UPDATE) My wisdom tooth just chipped out of nowhere!
I would not get an xray.. Ask the Dentist what kind of xray is it.. is it digital or old school?? Im an xray tech and I know that the old school xray by dentists is alot more radiation than medical xray.. They dont have filter requirements on machine, (which soften the beams, and gives the pt less exposure)...
If you do get the xray.. Demand more than one sheild covering your body.. make sure that baby is covered.. I would ask for every shield they have and also make sure they sheild your thyroid too.

This is very informative, thank you so much! To be quite honest I rather not take the chance, if my tooth isn't bothering me I'm not going to even bother. Once I get past the first trimester I will most certainly take your great advice but as of right now it's not worth any risks.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it
