I feel like Newark is such a hopeless city, my advice would be to just keep driving, but I know I would have stopped and yelled at them too. Your DH is right for being mad, but you 100% did the right thing. You had no time to call the police, they were in the street! Kudos to you for putting yourself on the line for the kids, they could have been hit bya car

FWIW- I probably would have done the same thing and I personally think you did the right thing. I'm glad everything worked out because you did put your life and safety at risk, but it would have personally bothered me all day that I didn't help break up that fight.

I would have done the same as you. I could never drive away knowing a kid was getting beat up......and I work in a really bad neighborhood too.

I can't believe how many people would drive away and MYOB.......really???? I could totally see the point of not getting out of the car and calling the police but to drive away while a CHILD is being assaulted???????? What if it was YOUR kid???

I said call the police, but I wouldn't have driven away. It probably would have taken me a second or two to assess the situation to see if I was going to physically break them up.
No matter what you say you would have done, you don't know until you're in that moment. For all I know, I would have done the same thing as the OP. Having a minute or two behind a computer to think about it is totally different than being there.
eta: The real issue now is that the OP's DH is mad at her for what she did. He should use that energy being mad at her and turn it around to just being thankful that she and all those kids are ok.

It sounds like you did the very best you could have in that situation. Sure, maybe you would've been safer if you looked the other way and kept driving, but that doesn't make it RIGHT.
ETA: And I don't think your DH is right to be mad. But then again, he probably isn't exactly angry per say, but concerned and upset that he wasn't there to help you.

I wou;d NOT get out of the car or itneract with the kids. Even with 10 year olds, you never know. i would have stopped the car and called 911

As someone who worked at NJIT public safety for 5+ years so I know the area well, I think you put yourself in danger. While I applaud you bc they are just kids, you have to understand that many kids that age have already been brought into gangs at this point, you just don't know if they are carrying or what they could do to you later since they have your plate number and I'm sure saw ur parking pass. I'm not trying to say all kids growing up in Newark are bad, not at all, but the fact remains that it's a higher chance then other places and I don't think I'd personally risk it in such a neighborhood.

I would have called the cops, but I wouldn't have gotten out of my car
I would be WAY too worried about them having a weapon and getting caught in the cross fire, or them turning on me
Also, from working in a school you're told to NEVER, ever break up a fight
might sound cruel but it's what i would do

I think u did the right thing. I would have honked and yelled first and NOT get out of the car. god only knows if they're carrying something. doesnt matter how young they are.
I would have stayed in my car and called the police.
I used to take NJTransit out of Trenton..another craptastic area.

You are really Brave because I have been to Newark many times for work and it is NOT a pleasant place. Overall, everyone is going to have there own opinion and you did what you felt was right and kudos to you!

I have no read your whole update, nor the WHOLE original OP.
I went to school (Rutgers) in Newark NJ for 5 years.
Under no circumstances would I have stopped the car and gotten out. None whatsoever.
Unfortunatly, even if they are children, you NEVER know if hey have weapons in Newark. You dont know if these CHILDREN are running drugs for someone.
I would never have stopped.

I agree, I worked in Newark for a number of years, there was a reason why my company employed Newark police officers to escort employees to the subway and parking garages. Gangs are rampart in Newark, and I totally. Dear stand why your DH was upset. Recently, I had a situation that could have turned VERY bad in Newark in broad daylight while in my car with my then 18 month old DD. All I did was honk my horn when someone changed lanes and cut me off forcing me onto the shoulder. The girl in the passenger seat, got out of the car at the next red light and started beating on my window that she was going to f'in kill me and my kid. her boyfriend got out and started screaming at her to find something to bash my window in.

I live in a pretty rough area and I would have done exactly what you did and dh would have yelled at me too. But I'm also the same person who will try and rescue a lost pit bull.

I would NOT get out and get involved or touch any of those kids.

Thanks for the responses  I feel good about the way I reacted and I'm glad to see that you ladies feel the same. DH is not "mad" as in staring a fight with me but he would have preferred that I consider my safety first. To me, children come first and again, I would hope someone would do the same for my child.
