UPDATED: 6 WK old had fever at Drs office today
Today we went for 6 week apt to get her first shots and check up. Well, when we get there and I undress her to weigh her, I noticed she felt really warm and said something to the nurse and Dr. The Dr said they would take her temp for me under the arm and sent a nurse in to do so. Well it came back 100.8 which I know is high. Dr said no shots today, and she wants to send DD to ER. Which means all sorts of injections and testing as well as a SPINAL TAP The thought of this was bringing me to tears.
I said, can we take the temp rectally, (I was really hot in the room too and thought maybe it was just really warm and DD wasn't fussing or anything and she was fine at home ) Well, DR had to look for a rectal thermometer and said it would probably be 101.8. Well it was 99.8, so Dr wants me to take her temp every 2 hours and if its over 100.4, then go to ER.
When I got home I took temp with our Vicks thermometer and it said 97.8 - I will keep monitoring her, but I really think it was just overly warm in car (I had to open a window) and then the Drs office and I had her dressed in a onsie, pjs and the bundle me lite blanket in car seat. I now have her in just a short sleeved onsie.
I guess I just wanted to share and see if anyone else had this type of thing happened to them. I'm terrified that she's
a. sick b. not sick, but I bring her to the ER and have them do these unneccesarry invasive tests and treatments.
thanks
5:00 update - temp is 98.7 9:00 pm - 98.4
UPDATE 5/9 - we just got back from Dr. Everything was fine overnight - no more high temperatures and we got the shots today after seeing 2 drs at the practice. the one dr was off yesterday and he agreed that it was really muggy and hot yesterday and it probably was just that I overdressed her, because she is "perfect" today. So she got 2 shots and she was not happy about that, but was consoled pretty quickly.
However, lesson learned - always insist on a rectal temperature before rushing to the ER. If I hadn't asked the Dr for that, she would have sent us to the ER for the Spinal tap and all...how awful that would have been!
Thanks again for all the support here when I needed it

I'm sure your DD is fine. It is very muggy today so that is probably why she was warm.

Keep taking her temp. It's so stressful with a newborn.
It's only been 2 and 1/2 weeks and swear I must take temp at least 2x a day!

Re: 6 WK old had fever at Drs office today
It kinda warm today. i'd keep taking the temp, but leave the blanket off.
Feel the back of babies neck under the clothes and the trunk, if they are warm and/or clamy or sweaty baby is warm/hot no matter how cold legs/arms/hands/feet are.
Hang in there I hope baby is not sick.

Re: 6 WK old had fever at Drs office today
But I wouldn't worry that much, I was told that in an infant that anything under 101 wasn't anything to worry about

Are you using the rectal thermometer? They are most accurate, I don't trust the ear/underarm yet.

Re: UPDATED: 6 WK old had fever at Drs office today
thank god!! glad she is feeling better. but why was the doc going to send her for a spinal tap. a 100.8 fever is not very high. my 8 week old had a fever of 102 and a spinal tap was never ever mentioned. i was just wondering. so glad it all worked out.
