Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car
Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car (AP) – 2 hours ago
RICHMOND, Va. — An executive for an anti-animal cruelty group says her 16-year-old blind and deaf dog died after she accidentally left him in her hot car for four hours.
Robin Starr, the CEO of the Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says she didn't realize "Louie" was in the car until noon. Starr's husband, Ed, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch he put the dog in her car as she got ready for work Aug. 19. She often took the dog to work with her.
Robin Starr took the dog to two clinics, but he died of kidney failure.
The National Weather Service says the temperature had reached 91 degrees by noon that day.
The board of the SPCA says it still supports Starr, who has been CEO since 1997 and does not plan to resign. It was unclear whether she would be charged.

How exactly do you "forget" you have an animal in your car?
Do you not notice a four legged furry creature in your car when you get in it?
Sorry this just makes me so

Unbelievable. That is so awful.
"The board of the SPCA says it still supports Starr, who has been CEO since 1997 and does not plan to resign." They've got to be kidding.

Yeah, I don't understand how you can NOT notice an animal in your car. It's not like the dog sits still in a corner of the car not moving. I bet it's a cover up.

Incredible display of a double standard! I used to work for an animal rescue group and if someone had read a story like this in the paper they would have used it to paint the person as a monster, but when it's one of their own it's a tragic mistake.

I do think it's a tragic mistake - one that could be easily made if the dog was sleeping in the back.

That's awful no matter how you look at it.
I hope it really was a mistake.

jackass.
they shouldn't be waiting for her to resign, they should can her behind.
pathetic, absolutely pathetic.
and so sad that NO ONE saw or thought to do ANYTHING to help that poor defenseless dog.
I'm honestly outraged by this.

Oh my, how horrible!!
I'm not jumping to conclusions here, that she really did know he was in there and forgot about him:

Somehow, I'm thinking a 16 year old dog is not running around the back of the car or making a whole lot of noise. And if he put the dog in the car while she was unaware, how would she know? Maybe she just didn't notice, isn't that possible?
I would think that someone like her wouldn't do something like this on purpose!
Assuming she's completely innocent, could you imagine, losing your dog in such a manner, and the overwhelming guilt you must feel even though it wasn't your doing, and then have people instantly condemn you for it?
It's a heartbreaking situation, but maybe she deserves a little benefit of the doubt.

It does sound like it was a mistake. I don't know if any of you have started your car before getting ready and then had a change of plans/got a phone call and wound up not leaving the house until a long time later when you realize your car was running that whole time...
It sounds like her husband put the dog in the car while she was getting ready and then maybe she never wound up leaving the house...
Regardless, it is very sad. Poor pup :(

GF - I would agree but it was her daily routine that she takes the dog to work.
It's not like this was something she didn't do all the time and her husband put him in the car and she never figured him to do it.
I understand and agree that most likely it was a HORRIBLE accident but I still can't help but feel anger toward this woman.
I just can't stop thinking about what an excrutiating way it was for that elderly dog to die.

What I'm gathering from the article is that the husband put Louie in the car, she then got in it and when on about her business. It says she stopped at two clinics.
What doesn't add up for me is that she made not one, but TWO stops (at the clinics) at no point did she or anyone else notice the dog in the car??
So sad.

I think it means when she found him, she brought him to two clinics for help. But I could be misreading it...

This article doesn't say daily, are there others that say she took the dog to work every single day? That's what I'm saying, I'm not assuming. Often could mean once a week.
I understand you're angry but maybe you're looking at her as the guilty party to have a focus for that, you know? But it really might not have been her fault, it's possible. I'd normally feel the same, but this just saddens me, and I put myself in her spot. I'd be inconsolable if something like this happened to me, and to be the focus of blame if I was innocent... Like a knife in the heart, you know?

You're correct, she didn't do it daily but often.
Like I said, I'm sure it was a horrible accident and I'm sure she's completely heart broken, it just angers me that her poor dog had to suffer a painful death ultimately at her and her husbands hands.

I agree. I really feel for this woman considering she has basically spent her career trying to prevent things like this from happening. Very tragic

This happened to a friend of a friend's dog...it was asleep in the back of the mini van...quite different from the idiots i deal with who leave their dogs in the car while they shop...and then tell me "it's not that hot out!"...i would die if i did this to my dog by accident I feel so bad for her...

i cant imagine not knowing my dog was in the car BUT it did say that her husband put the dog in there without letting her know and if he was an older dog he could have been quietly laying down in the back. Its sad either way

Okay, my first response was harsh. Given that the dog was 16, he probably didn't move or bark much.
BUT, the care was in the SPCA parking lot, and NO ONE noticed? Come on now! These people are trained to look for this sort of thing.

Re: Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car
I think this was a very tragic accident. This woman will have to live with this every day which I think is punishment enough for her. She must feel absolutely horrible.
We've heard about similar stories where people have lost children because they left them in the car. As hard as it is to comprehend EVER doing something like that, it is possible. It is possible for the routine to change. It is possible for your mind to not be in the right place. It's possible with sleep deprivation that you truly believe your animal or child is somewhere else because that's where they were yesterday. It is possible for it to happen to any of us no matter how on top of things we are. We just pray that it doesn't happen. And in the end it is a horrible, tragic accident.
