I do think it's a tragic mistake - one that could be easily made if the dog was sleeping in the back.
I agree. Its really sad - my dog often falls asleep in the car and she is only 10.

Re: Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car
It seems clear from the article that her husband put the dog in the car and she didn't realize that he was there. This was a misunderstanding and an accident. She did nothing wrong and deserves our sympathy, not outrage.

I agree, seaside. I feel terrible for her. She must feel such guilt.

Re: Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car
Given her position and how long she has held it I am sure it is a horrible accident.... she must feel so terrible right now...My only question is why the husband did not mention it..
our 2 dogs are 12 and 13 and when we take them in the car they sleep and never make a peep. If my husband put the dog in the car without telling me I could definitely see not noticing her back there....

Okay, my first response was harsh. Given that the dog was 16, he probably didn't move or bark much.
BUT, the care was in the SPCA parking lot, and NO ONE noticed? Come on now! These people are trained to look for this sort of thing.
I walk around parked cars checking inspections all the time & you'd be surprised how many dogs i find "by accident"...meaning i easily could've walked by the car & never noticed the animal because it was sleeping.

Oh my, how horrible!!
I'm not jumping to conclusions here, that she really did know he was in there and forgot about him:

16-year-old blind and deaf dog
he put the dog in her car as she got ready for work
Somehow, I'm thinking a 16 year old dog is not running around the back of the car or making a whole lot of noise. And if he put the dog in the car while she was unaware, how would she know? Maybe she just didn't notice, isn't that possible?
I would think that someone like her wouldn't do something like this on purpose!
Assuming she's completely innocent, could you imagine, losing your dog in such a manner, and the overwhelming guilt you must feel even though it wasn't your doing, and then have people instantly condemn you for it?
It's a heartbreaking situation, but maybe she deserves a little benefit of the doubt.
I agree - it could have been a mistake.....people have left CHILDREN in cars by mistake - how does that happen? unfortunately it just does

Honestly if we are going to place any blame here (which I personally don't believe any blame should be placed in this case) it would be more with the husband for not telling her he put the dog in the car. He really should have given her a quick heads up.
Either way this is an awful tragedy!

Re: Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car
such an awful thing to happen bc of lack of communication.....
i am thinking maybe the husband took the dog out and thought she will be leaving soon so i will save her some time and put the dog in the car.....but then he forgets to mention the dog is in the car to his wife.....
the wife not knowing the dog is there just goes on with her day.....
a small dog or sleeping dog in the back seat is easily unnoticed, not to compare to a dog but i have a bag of paper/office supplies that has been in my back seat for a week bc i cant see it when i get in and out of the car and i forget....
i cant imagine the guilt this family must be feeling......so sad
