Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
I'm due at the end of June and my Mom is making me sooo paranoid about vaccinations for my baby. She volunteers for this little boy who has Autism and the parents are convinced the little boy got autism b/c of the vaccination schedule he got as a baby. The Mom of the little boy has been talking to my Mom about all this and now my Mom talks to me....in turn I'm being made to feel like a bad Mommy if I allow my newborn to get all the shots in the hospital when she is born.
I understand both sides of the story....I want my baby vaccinated, but at the same time is it really necessary to give SO many shots to a little baby right after they are born and up until they are a few years old?
Are there reasonable requests I can make that will make me feel better about all of this? Are there certain shots I can refuse or does anyone think spacing out the shots helps?
Any advice is helpful. TIA!!!

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
There was a whole thread on the "infamous" vaccination and autism not too long ago on this board.
We just met with a pediatrician. In short, there are no evidence of that one study that was done several years ago. Then it was linked to Mercury as a preservative in the vaccines. Again, it was removed about 2 years ago from the vaccine.
The "pediatrician-to-be" told us that parents that wish to give each shot for the MMR separatelly is fine with him. That's what we will probably do.
In the long run, vaccination has proven to be more beneficial than not being vaccinated. I will try to push some of them off a bit.

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
also the only real shot they get in the hospital is the Heb B shot which you have a right to refuse. Me and my Dh are not going to give it to him right away, and even the doctor said they really only give it when their first born b/c its convenient with the baby being in the hospital and all. My feeling is also that i didnt want to many shots given at one time when they start their wellcare/baby visits with the pediatrician (they tend to give the babies 4 shots at their 2, 4, and 6 month app't) but my doctor offices only does 2 shots every month instead, which i am thrilled with. and we are also going to split up and delay the MMR shot

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
My DDs are vaccinated any my DS is not. I blindly followed my doctor's advice with them, but really researched it before DS was born. I think you should do the same, that way you are 100% comfortable with your decision either way.
I feel confident in my decision not to vaccinate my children anymore. After researching it all I'm not that scared of the diseases we vaccinate for. If I had decided to vaccinate I would space them out and only give one shot per visit, any never vaccinate when my DC was sick. I would also refuse the HepB at birth and delay the MMR

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
I'm going for his vaccinations this Friday. I am an autism professional. If you do a search with autism and my screen name, you will see me writing over and over again....
There is no proven link between the vaccines and autism. I work with families who have opted not to vaccinate their second child after their 1st developed autism (those who do believe there is a link) and the 2nd child still wound up having autism.
There is more pointing towards genetics than anything else....
I am taking Cailen this Friday for some of his vaccinations. I am concerned about the fever he may get, but thats it.... I plan on doing all the vaccinations. I am against them more for health reasons than anything else, but he needs them for daycare....

Thanks for your opinion and the link. I guess I could have done a search myself, but I jumped the gun and just posted a new topic.
What is your take on the hep b shot? Why do many people decide to refuse this particular shot??

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
i also work with autistic kids and just speaking regarding the heb b shot- my reason for not giving it at birth has nothing to do with it correlating or not with autism, its more b/c i feel that its to much to soon for their poor little bodies to be pumped with an unnessesary vaccination. Me and my DH do not have Heb B and my child will be watched by my SIL and a women who has no other children, so i am not afraid of him being exposed to it right now, even if he was in daycare, you can only get it, if a mom has it and has passed it on to their baby, or if in contact with someone who had Heb b such as by blood or semen, you cant get it by touch, etc. but everyone is different, some women are fine giving it at birth, it has to be what you and your DH are comfortable with. plus like i said above even my pediatrician would have prefered that me and my Dh choose to have my son get it wheh he's born, said they do it so early more out of convenience versus necessity.

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
we also chose NOT to have the Hep B vaccine in the hopsital..we waited for the PED to do it. I was told it wasnt necesary. But i would vaccinate your child, by NOT having them vaccinated could cause outbreaks of some diseases. I too will also get the MMR shots separate. I know there is NO PROOF, but I worked with a child with Autism for 3 years and knew the mom very well and she was convinced the shots did it to her son...
I never heard of people refusing the Hep B shot, we just wanted our PED to do it so it was on record that they did it in the office.

My pediatrician gave it to DS in the hospital. The practice is affiliated, so he was the one who checked the baby out before releasing him.

See - thats my beef with vaccinations - we are really getting nuts now with vaccs - I mean, chicken pox??? That won't kill anyone - we all have been exposed to chicken pox. I resent that state law insists I plug my child full of drugs... I'm sending him off to daycare, so I have no choice. I'm not worried abt him getting exposed, I'm worried they wont take him into daycare without them!

Thats ok - no reason to do a search - thats what these boards are for - to ask questions that are on our minds. I am not a believer in the "do a search first" - there are always new people out there with new advice, opinions, etc... I just linked this so you can see more opinions from the past!

I also said no to the hep b in the hospital because I wanted to talk to my ped first.
It wasn't a big deal, I didn't have to refuse. They gave me a choice, said I could get it in the hospital or not.

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
We break up her shots. I didn't follow the schedule and delayed starting them. I saw no reason to start them so young. They don't protect against common colds and things like that. I never understood the whole not taking your baby out until they have shots thing. We started at 5 months. DD is almost 2 and isn't quite caught up but she will be by 2&1/2.

Re: Vaccination Questions from a soon-to-be-Mommy
Ii got the hep b shot in the hospital because hep b is very common and they need 2 shots to be immune. I will vaccinate although Ii still am not convinced it is right. I know autism is probably linked genetically but they do not know this for a FACT. I also have a brother with MS and they do not know if that is vaccination linked. I give no more then one shot and break everything up. MMR is usually not broken up because the doc has to order a certain # of it and its too expensive--thats the bottom line--they want to save money so they are combined. I get freaked...first something isn't related to it--then it is then it isn't. So Ii just figure these are my kids and I am not takking chances until they know for a fact.

I follow the vaccination schedule but did delay the Hep B vaccination in the hospital. I felt like my son had been through enough after a difficult birth and circumcision. Also, Hep B is basically an STD so it wasn't as if he was at risk of catching it...
ETA: I've done the research and don't believe there is a link b/w vaccination and autism.

same here. But my decision had nothing to do with Autism.
I will be putting off the MMR.

We dr never gives more than 2 shots at a time. I split the MMR into 3 shots and delayed it a bit.
Otherwise I followed their schedule

Yes, you can get an exemption which allows your child to be in school without vaccinations.

My pediatrician gave it to DS in the hospital. The practice is affiliated, so he was the one who checked the baby out before releasing him. same here. I have patients who are autistic and those moms swear up and down the vaccines gave it to their sons. My gf's son has autism and he showed signs of it before he was vaccinated.
2 years ago there was a study that according to the pediatric medical journals shouldnt have been published. It had NO proof, just assumptions and FREAKED out the country. all studies after that theory proved NO LINK.
what was happening was, and why they suspected it to be the vaccines was b/c the same time the children were diagnosed with autism or showing signs of it, they had just gotten their shots. so many parents believed it to be that. Mercury has NOT been in vaccines in a long time now. Its just like the paper I had to do for school on Long Island and breast cancer. I researched it like crazy and found out that the reason why LI doesnt have Fluoride in the water is b/c they thought it caused breast cancer. NO proven link but a theory. so now our water doesnt have fluoride in it and women are still getting breast cancer.

In the long run, vaccination has proven to be more beneficial than not being vaccinated. I will try to push some of them off a bit.
I am torn & I have already refused vaccinations twice for Giovanni. I am not a fan of Western Medicine in general, but with the new strains of some of these viruses, I do understand the need to keep our kids safe. I spoke with our Pediatrician, and we agreed that we will devise our own schedule that will more than be fulfilled by the time Giovanni goes to school. Also, there are some vaccinations that I will not get, one of which is the HepB. Personally I do not see why a newborn needs this vaccination.
I think it is a very personal choice, and I think that even the Doctors, as educated as they are, come from a particular school of thought that may not be agreeable for everyone. You have to do what you think is right, as long as you know both sides.
BTW, just because they stopped making the mercury infused vaccinations, does not mean there are not some still in circulation. I very specifically asked my Ped when they acquired their vaccinations & if it was after they stopped producing the old ones.
