Vaccine....I need some education

I’m able to sign up to get the vaccine and I’m so on the fence. I want to do it to just end this craziness but there are so many unanswered questions.

They talked about changing the dosage amounts on one of them....is this something that should be concerning? Pumping extra into you when it’s not necessary?

How long do the antibodies in the vaccine actually last? This is what’s holding me back. The fact that I can’t get a straight answer on how long this will last and how often I need to get it. It just goes back to my original reason for not getting it....it hasn’t been around long enough.

I just can’t decide what to do! I need to hear some educated opinions.

Re: Vaccine....I need some education

You are going to get A LOT of different opinions and Chat Icon on this thread.

From what I have gathered, a lot of the ingredients are also in other vaccines, so that makes me feel better (I heard this from a reputable source, but I can’t find exactly where I found it).

I don’t think they know yet if we need it every year. That being said, it is a Coronavirus and it seems likely that we will.

Honestly, at this point for me it seems like this is a step in the right direction to get back to ‘normal.’ I’m in Lockdown and have been since November 1st. I was OK in the beginning, but now I am going crazy. I’ll do anything at this point to improve my quality of life.

I could sit there and say it is for the benefit of society, but at this point I feel like society has gone out the window Chat Icon .

Yes I’ve heard many of the ingredients are in other vaccines which made me feel better.

I’m just hung up on the fact that I can’t get a clear answer on how long it lasts in your body. Like are we all injecting this and it’s only lasting 3 months? Or is it close to a year? What are the side effects of getting this vaccine repeatedly year after year?

I really hope it doesn’t take a turn in the wrong direction, I’m genuinely trying to listen to everyone and be pointed in the right direction to read up a little more.

Vaccine....I need some education

I just had the conversation about the vaccine with moms (all medical professionals) at my sons hockey practice. All information so far is saying it will be a yearly shot much like how you get the flu. The will allow for them to tweak it along the way for mutations etc.

They are all getting it because of the perfectly healthy people (no underlying conditions) that are coming into their hospitals. One said she is seeing so many PEs in people that have no history that would cause it other than Covid.

In the end no one can convince anyone else. I’ll be right there to get it when I can. My 78 year old parents have received their first dose. Covid could kill me or this vaccine could. I’ll take the chance!

I don’t think they know how long it lasts in your body because they haven’t fully understood the virus yet. It’s difficult to understand a vaccine if not much is known about the virus.

As for the side effects year after year: hmm, good question. I’m just clinging on to the fact that they aren’t using totally new ingredients. They do have other data from other vaccines to go off of. People get the flu vaccine every year, and I haven’t heard of serious side effects with regards to a ‘build up’ of that vaccine.

I’m going to get mine. I’m not looking forward to it (who looks forward to needles?!), but I’ll get it.

I take 3 or more shots a day, so needles don't bother me at all... Chat Icon I'm not normal, though (in many ways) Chat Icon

When my group eligibility comes around, I'll be one of the early ones to get the shot. I'm not going to try and jump in line ahead of people who need it more than me. I work from home, and I can isolate for the most part, so it's not "urgent" for me.
I've read too many scientific studies of long-term effects of Covid that I will do whatever I can to avoid catching it.
I get the flu shot every year, since as a diabetic, I'm "high risk", so I'm starting off this topic with a very pro-vaccine outlook.

Vaccine....I need some education

They talked about changing the dosage amounts on one of them....is this something that should be concerning?

As of now, there is NO change. Places like the UK are trying to get everyone their first dosage with no definite date of when they will receive their second dosage. Fauci is against this as the research does not support this. Efficacy was MUCH higher after 2 doses.

The problem is that states lack the resources to set up the necessary infrastructure to effectively distribute the vaccines.

-------------------------
How long do the antibodies in the vaccine actually last?

They do not know. The initial studies focused on the chances of you getting Covid and showing symptoms.

Moderna expects it to provide protection for a couple of years based on the slow decay of antibodies. They need more time, research and data.

Moderna CEO says vaccine likely to protect for 'couple of years'

They have great highlights that go over much of what you are asking about.

I am part of Phase 1B, which starts tomorrow, and I plan on getting the vaccine ASAP. I work at a school and every single person I am friends with has been counting down the days until our phase begins. I have not spoken with one coworker who doesn't plan on getting it. This is in part due to the fact that students are coming into school while waiting on their Covid test results, which then come back positive and require people to quarantine. We had probably 20 teachers who had to quarantine during the holiday break due to this.

Have to agree with you on this one. Although I did hear on one of the news channels that the shot lasts up to 4 years, but I dont rely on these sources. To be honest, I dont even think doctors know how long it will last, especially if the virus has mutated into different strains.

I’ve recently switched to a new office and they seem to be pushing it and giving the line “why wouldn’t you want to help slow the spread”.

So I’m trying to do my own research

That's so horrible for so many reasons. So basically, every time a kid keeps his/her mouth shut about how irresponsible their parents are being by sending them in with symptoms or while a test is pending, you guys are being exposed and endangered and don't even know it. Does anything happen to the families that get caught being reckless like this?

ETA: Glad you're getting the shot soon. You all deserve raises and hazard pay to go with the shots.

I am eligible and have received the first dose. To me it's either getting COVID or getting the vaccine. The latter is preferable (at least for me). I'm getting a little concerned about the second dose, because sites are all down now for my colleagues looking to get the vaccine. They said the DOH would email us regarding the second dose.

As for the dosage, they are talking about halving the dose of the Moderna (I am not sure that they are actively doing that now). Moderna is about 100mg vs. Pfizer which is about 40mg. They are not sure about the efficacy of the lower dose, but the thought is that in those patients 18-55 the halved dose may work just as well. Again, I do not think they are currently doing this, but they may decide to in the future to increase the rations. From last I heard, it will take a couple months of research to see if the lower dosage is as effective.

Have you seen the explosion in numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths? I know MANY people who have gotten COVID in just the last month. People who are very careful and do not do anything other than go to work and the grocery store. Just because you haven't gotten it yet, does not mean you won't.
As for the vaccine, I have an appointment for Friday evening. I am a teacher in NYC. I am not concerned I will get COVID. I am young, healthy, and have zero underlying conditions. I would most likely be fine. I am doing it for the good of society. I am not getting this vaccine so I won't get COVID. I am getting this vaccine so many others who are high risk will not get COVID.

You constantly bring up how you feel about Covid and the vaccine when you ask asinine questions like the one you just posted. Honestly I have HAD IT with your posts. I cant be the only one who makes a Chat Icon Chat Icon face every time you post. Seriously. Covid is real, is NOT a R%$#R HOAX and the vaccine is the only path forward to some semblance of normality. Either get educated or shut the F UP!

Not debating and never said it wasn’t real. It seems they really don’t know everything about the vaccine yet, all too new. We don’t even know it is the only path to normality. We can only hope that is true.

Because anyone can get it (even you). I personally am in healthcare with high exposure risk. But even so, I see the vaccine as a civic duty to help protect others and help foster herd immunity.

Ummm.............huh?

At the rate it is spreading it's just a matter of time before we all end up getting it at some point. Nobody is immune and it takes just ONE interaction with the wrong person and you're sick.

I honestly think many of us have had it before we knew what it was. Of course we can’t tell if you can get it again. No one knows 100% about this yet.

I haven't been sick since last January nor has anyone in my household so that would NOT be the case for us.

Regardless if someone has had it before, there is a MASSIVE amount of rising cases right now and unless everyone gets on board with this vaccine, things will continue to worsen instead of improving. That is just fact.

Nobody is 100% on COVID but I get the sense you don't trust doctors and science AT ALL and the reality is, they know WAY more about this virus and treating it than YOU seem to think. Remember, this is COVID NINETEEN, there have been 18 other iterations of this virus therefore scientists and doctors aren't working from ground zero here with this vaccine.

Didn’t say since January and you can’t deny this is the season that many people get sick. I hope as much as everyone else this vaccine helps. I am allowed to question things though just like others have, even on this board.

Didn’t say since January and you can’t deny this is the season that many people get sick. I hope as much as everyone else this vaccine helps. I am allowed to question things though just like others have, even on this board.

CDC website - Cold and flu cases are WAY down this year from same time last year. No reason to believe that trend won't continue through the remainder of the season as long as people continue to mask up and social distance.

As for your comment, you literally said "most of us have probably had it before" and my response to that was my family hasn't been sick since last January so no, we have not had COVID before. Anyone who is social distancing, masking and who has not been sick all year, has not had it either.

But the point is, we can ALL get it despite it being around almost a year now. It's not like because you made it COVID free this long you are in some "safe zone". We all need to continue to be diligent until the majority has been vaccinated.
