To me it's either getting COVID or getting the vaccine.
Have you gotten Covid? It has been around almost a year now so why do you assume you will get it?
Ummm.............huh?
At the rate it is spreading it's just a matter of time before we all end up getting it at some point. Nobody is immune and it takes just ONE interaction with the wrong person and you're sick.
I honestly think many of us have had it before we knew what it was. Of course we can’t tell if you can get it again. No one knows 100% about this yet.
. Remember, this is COVID NINETEEN, there have been 18 other iterations of this virus therefore scientists and doctors aren't working from ground zero here with this vaccine.
Actually, it is COVID NINETEEN because it was discovered in 2019. Yes, coronaviruses have been around for awhile, though.
Oops you are correct. My mistake. I literally knew this, had a brain blip. LOL But yes, coronaviruses have been around for a long time.
This one is somewhat similar to SARS, which was in 2003, so they've been studying a virus very much like COVID-19 for 17 years.

I haven't been sick since last January nor has anyone in my household so that would NOT be the case for us.
Regardless if someone has had it before, there is a MASSIVE amount of rising cases right now and unless everyone gets on board with this vaccine, things will continue to worsen instead of improving. That is just fact.
Nobody is 100% on COVID but I get the sense you don't trust doctors and science AT ALL and the reality is, they know WAY more about this virus and treating it than YOU seem to think. Remember, this is COVID NINETEEN, there have been 18 other iterations of this virus therefore scientists and doctors aren't working from ground zero here with this vaccine.
Didn’t say since January and you can’t deny this is the season that many people get sick. I hope as much as everyone else this vaccine helps. I am allowed to question things though just like others have, even on this board.
CDC website - Cold and flu cases are WAY down this year from same time last year. No reason to believe that trend won't continue through the remainder of the season as long as people continue to mask up and social distance.
As for your comment, you literally said "most of us have probably had it before" and my response to that was my family hasn't been sick since last January so no, we have not had COVID before. Anyone who is social distancing, masking and who has not been sick all year, has not had it either.
But the point is, we can ALL get it despite it being around almost a year now. It's not like because you made it COVID free this long you are in some "safe zone". We all need to continue to be diligent until the majority has been vaccinated.
That is great but from the symptoms of Covid, I know many who had them before it was known and it was said that it might have been here before the first case in February.

You couldn't have known it was COVID before we had testing for COVID. So I don't care if you know 600 people who were sick and *thought* they had it, it doesn't mean much of anything. There is no validity in your statement, just a hazard guess someone made based on their symptoms, symptoms that also mimic colds and flu. I don't doubt it was here before February but it certainly wasn't widespread until March.
That aside, I am confused as to this tangent and what your point is. You posted to say "why should anyone worry about getting COVID if they have made it all year without it". My reply was that the fact that you haven't been sick up until this point doesn't mean you can't get it. EVERYONE should continue to worry as nothing is better and in fact, it's far worse. Until the vaccine is readily available and the majority take it we will continue to be on edge and not be able to live life normally.

Have you seen the explosion in numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths? I know MANY people who have gotten COVID in just the last month. People who are very careful and do not do anything other than go to work and the grocery store. Just because you haven't gotten it yet, does not mean you won't. As for the vaccine, I have an appointment for Friday evening. I am a teacher in NYC. I am not concerned I will get COVID. I am young, healthy, and have zero underlying conditions. I would most likely be fine. I am doing it for the good of society. I am not getting this vaccine so I won't get COVID. I am getting this vaccine so many others who are high risk will not get COVID.
I'm very confused about this. I've been very vocal about my hesitation to take the vaccine, and one of the reasons is the "herd immunity" theory.
They are unsure if you can still pass covid onto someone if you have the vaccine. How do we then establish "herd immunity?" Am I misunderstanding something?
(I can't post the link from my phone but it's on the John Hopkins Covid 19 vaccine info page)

No, no one could be 100% they had it but when you have had many of the symptoms and some tested for the flu and came back negative multiple times, it seems quite odd. It was really bad for many so unless you knew anyone who were sick before this came about and there was no testing for it, you don’t understand.

People can get the antibody test to see if they had the virus. It could have been around in Feb. We went away to Mexico, and many people ar Newark airport were wearing masks, and even on the plane.

I was curious about this as well.
I feel like with so many unknowns about the virus (is it spread asymptotically, does it live on surfaces, etc.... the answers are constantly changing). I just have a hard time wrapping my head around taking a vaccine for a virus that we still are learning about and just taking it “for the good of society”. I want to want to wait on line for this for hours to do my part but I’m just not convinced yet.

Trust me sweetie, I understand just fine. I know MANY who were VERY sick prior to COVID being announced, many who have been sick with COVID since March, many who STILL suffer even after "getting better" and one friend who was on his deathbed and now 10 months later is STILL on oxygen.
So again, what was your point earlier in the thread???
You said nobody should worry if they haven't been sick yet which of course, makes NO sense. So please, enlighten us with your infinite wisdom of this virus and why we don't need to be concerned now.

Yes but if I am correct that doesn’t last very long so if it was a year ago, it won’t come up.
One of my dear friends was in bed for 3 weeks. A man who is nonstop and barely gets sick and if he does, it is not bad and really doesn’t stop him much. He went for one and was negative. It was many many months later though and was told it might not show up anymore.

Exactly. I am so confused about this virus and this vaccine. I'm really trying my best to figure it out, but the information seems to contradict itself. Everyone is pushing the vaccine and saying we need to establish herd immunity, but if the vaccine doesn't stop you from getting Covid (it may only make you asymptomatic), and doesn't stop you from passing it to others (no one knows), what good does it do? I keep going around in circles!!!

(I can't post the link from my phone but it's on the John Hopkins Covid 19 vaccine info page)
You are not the only one and many of us have questions and do lots of research. If the CDC changes all the time, it is hard to know how much they really know about this. A doctor just died who took the vaccine. They are not 100% positive it was from the vaccine but that is scary to know this.

To me it's either getting COVID or getting the vaccine.
Have you gotten Covid? It has been around almost a year now so why do you assume you will get it?

I saw that. And that doesn’t worry me as much since tons of people have taken it already and he appears to be the only one right now.
It’s the long term. It’s the effectiveness. It’s the length of time between dosages. It’s the unknown as to whether or not you can still be a carrier. It’s knowing if we will even have enough when it comes time for second doses. So many questions.
I don’t want to inject something that was quickly put together that might only work for a couple months and I’m still spreading this virus. I’m doing risk vs reward right now and I’m leaning towards waiting a couple more months.

Yes, yes, yes totally agree with all of this.

Re: Vaccine....I need some education
These vaccines both moderna and Pfizer use technology never used before in a vaccine. They are mRNA vaccines. I would research what this means and the implications of this if you are looking for education before getting the vaccine.

That's not true. mRNA vaccines have been studied and used for decades and that is in fact how they were able to come up with a vaccine so quickly. I recommend the following website from the CDC:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/mrna.html
As for herd immunity, it is true that we don't know for sure if the vaccine can prevent transmission (can those vaccinated still be silent carriers?). They need to monitor areas where vaccination is prevalent to see if infections also drop among the remaining unvaccinated people. Or they could ask people to swab themselves daily and track how often vaccinated people test positive and whether they pass the virus to other members of their household.
These things take time that we just do not have. Almost 300,000 dead. This thing is worldwide and real. We do know that the asymptomatic are less likely to spread the disease, so that makes me hopeful that this will provide herd immunity. We still need to follow all of our precautions (masks, distancing) for awhile until we know for sure.

I have researched this to the death over the last few months. I did not find anything about any implications. Quite the opposite.

I just posted this exact question in a new thread! Lol sorry. Should have finished reading this one first!

Yes, I’m pretty sure it IS true. The link you posted does NOT say otherwise. It says that mRNA technology has been studied for a while it does not say that any other vaccine used mRNA technology. From what I have read and been told by doctors mRNA vaccines have never before been approved for any other disease. If you know of one please tell me I would truly like to know but, what I wrote is likely true and your link does not contradict it. And you said mRNA vaccines have been used for decades? What vaccine is an mRNA vaccine that has been used for decades? Please share.

mRNA therapies have been used in human trials safely for over 5 years and studied for over 3 decades. You are correct though that there has never been a mRNA vaccine.
Also mRNA is just based on the protein synthesis that occurs in your cells day in and day out. mRNA degrades quickly once it has been translated into the spike proteins in the ribosomes. It is an inherently unstable molecule due to the nitrogenous base, uracil.

You are going to get A LOT of different opinions and on this thread.
From what I have gathered, a lot of the ingredients are also in other vaccines, so that makes me feel better (I heard this from a reputable source, but I can’t find exactly where I found it).
I don’t think they know yet if we need it every year. That being said, it is a Coronavirus and it seems likely that we will.
Honestly, at this point for me it seems like this is a step in the right direction to get back to ‘normal.’ I’m in Lockdown and have been since November 1st. I was OK in the beginning, but now I am going crazy. I’ll do anything at this point to improve my quality of life.
I could sit there and say it is for the benefit of society, but at this point I feel like society has gone out the window .
Yes I’ve heard many of the ingredients are in other vaccines which made me feel better.
I’m just hung up on the fact that I can’t get a clear answer on how long it lasts in your body. Like are we all injecting this and it’s only lasting 3 months? Or is it close to a year? What are the side effects of getting this vaccine repeatedly year after year?
I really hope it doesn’t take a turn in the wrong direction, I’m genuinely trying to listen to everyone and be pointed in the right direction to read up a little more.
I don’t think they know how long it lasts in your body because they haven’t fully understood the virus yet. It’s difficult to understand a vaccine if not much is known about the virus.
As for the side effects year after year: hmm, good question. I’m just clinging on to the fact that they aren’t using totally new ingredients. They do have other data from other vaccines to go off of. People get the flu vaccine every year, and I haven’t heard of serious side effects with regards to a ‘build up’ of that vaccine.
I’m going to get mine. I’m not looking forward to it (who looks forward to needles?!), but I’ll get it.
I take 3 or more shots a day, so needles don't bother me at all... I'm not normal, though (in many ways)
When my group eligibility comes around, I'll be one of the early ones to get the shot. I'm not going to try and jump in line ahead of people who need it more than me. I work from home, and I can isolate for the most part, so it's not "urgent" for me. I've read too many scientific studies of long-term effects of Covid that I will do whatever I can to avoid catching it. I get the flu shot every year, since as a diabetic, I'm "high risk", so I'm starting off this topic with a very pro-vaccine outlook.
How can there be scientific studies on the long term implications of the disease?
And if the virus is so similar to the SARS virus, why don’t we know for sure how long natural immunity lasts or how effective a vaccine might be?
We either understand the virus or we don’t.
ETA- I’m not asking you Goldenrod specifically. I quoted you because you mention long term studies in Covid.

Everyone's definition of "long-term" varies, too. If people consider "long-term" to be a lifespan, we won't know if the virus or the vaccine causes "long-term" effects for 75 years or more. We will all have to draw a line in the sand as to what we think "long term" safety is.

I’m confused by this. If you researched this to death you would have seen concerns. Saying you saw no implications but researched this to death is a bit confusing to me.
All this said, op pls do not take your “education” from this thread. You can see in all the back and forth all the blatant misinformation on both sides. Talk to medical professionals and do your own research. Only you know your medical history and whether you feel comfortable to proceed with the covid vaccine.

Re: Vaccine....I need some education
Even though you get the vaccine, Dr. Fauci still said you need to wear masks, social distance and isolate from your family/friends. He doesnt know how long for. There’s still a chance you get sick or get people sick, they don’t know how long it protects you for. Based on this, I see no reason for me to get this vaccine right now. Maybe if it was 1 dose I would consider it. But to get two doses and then maybe have to get two more doses in the fall during the actual season. I rather wait on it.
And this is ignoring if there would actually be long term side effects of this vaccine, because no one can answer to this.
