Vegas Advice/Tips
DH and I are going to Vegas in two weeks. We're staying at the Mirage.
Does anyone have any advice as far as restaurants, money saving tips, things to do (grand canyon, nightlife, shows, etc)?
Thanks!

Re: Vegas Advice/Tips
How long will you be staying in Vegas?
Ask to be in the new tower rooms at the Mirage - those are all King size beds and brand new decor.
The Mirage has a really great breakfast/lunch buffet. It's about $11 or $12 (or was a year ago!) and they have anything and everything you could want. We would usually go around 10:30am and make it into brunch then just have a snack by the pool and then dinner later at night.
If you are there for 4 or more days, go to the Grand Canyon! We LOVED it! It was a very long day (5 hours there and 5 hours back), but it was highly worth it. You could do the helicopter trip out there but it's much more expensive.
The Bellagio has a dinner buffet for around $30? They have everything you could want too! Those are the only two buffets DH and I have gone to in Vegas, but they were good!
If you want a romantic restaurant with a view of the strip, try The Top of The World restaurant at the top of the Stratosphere - the Stratosphere itself isn't much to look at, but the hotel is dim, has a complete view of the entire strip, and ROTATES 360 degrees in an hour and a half. It's not "cheap" but I don't think it's as expensive as some of the fancier "name" restaurants on the strip.
ETA: We saw Cirque du Soleil's "O" at the Bellagio and my DH still talks about it to this day. Very spectacular type of show - not cheap, but I haven't found any of the production shows to be cheap in Vegas.

Re: Vegas Advice/Tips
Thanks so much for the feedback!
We're going for 5 days. We'd both love to go to the Grand Canyon but got discouraged when we found out how far away it is. Needless to say we agreed that we will go back in a few years with our son and go to the Grand Canyon, Sedona and the Hoover Dam. But this trip is more to recharge the batteries.
How is the pool at the mirage? I like your idea on combining lunch and dinner. That works for us.
As far as shows go I was doing research today and there are some good deals out there. Elton's show end this month. Jersey Boys. I'd love to go to Cirque du Soleil but DH doesn't want to. I'll see if I can work on it while I"m there.
As far as the restaurants go, do most require reservations or not? We'll probably do a buffet at least 1 night but I want to go to a nice place at least one night too. Just don't want to spend a fortune because I still have to think about gambling money.
Thanks again!

We like craftsteak at MGM. If you can get your husband to see a Cirque show I liked O at Bellagio for the entire show. Zumanity at NYNY is for adults, it's funny and pervy. KA at MGM has a war type storyline and men seem to like that one more. Phantom at Venetian was good. I think Stomp is there now?

Re: Vegas Advice/Tips
The trip to the Grand Canyon was a very long day, but soooo worth it! If you want a re-charge type vacation, then it's a good idea to do it on another trip! You'll still have lots to do (or not do!) on the strip.
The pool at the Mirage is actually one of the nicest pools on the strip, in my opinion. There is TONS of seating (although when I went for my bachelorette party in September, the chairs were all kinda smushed together so they could fit as many people as possible). It has a waterfall on one side of the pool too.
We would usually go eat "brunch" at the buffet in Mirage wearing our bathing suits with cover ups, then head to the pool and chillax for a few hours. A couple of times we go food in the afternoon at the little restaurant by the pool.
If you want to go to one of the nicer "well known" restaurants, I would make a reservation. You don't want to be turned away or have to wait a LONG time. We usually do simple stuff for dinner and have one really nice meal (that we reserve beforehand) while in Vegas.
As for the Cirque shows, I'm not sure if your DH is like my DH, but mine doesn't really love Broadway shows - I mean, he's gone with me, but he doesn't like feel excited about it, lol. Well, the "O" show at the Bellagio was a very different show, all based in this humongous pool on stage (the stage is the pool) and they do all of these acrobatic things etc. Very cool and entertaining. Still not sure if your DH would enjoy it, but maybe if you tell him what it's like?
PP, thanks for mentioning you enjoyed Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian! I just found out about it and I hope we can see it when DH and I make it out there next time! Do you think it's a good "date night" type show?

I do. The Vegas show has some extra flash but they kept all the important parts. When we went we stayed at the Venetian, went to the show, had drinks after at the Grand Lux and went upstairs. We had a great time.

I LOVE the Phantom and really didn't care for it. I found it to be to Vegas. You have to really know the story to understand because they only hit the highlites. I love going to Casino Royal. It's btwn Harrah's and Venetian. It's a small casino but they have good cheap drinks and good odds. I love going there. As far as food I like Toby Keiths for quick, affordable, LARGE sandwiches. My mom and I share a pulled pork sandwich and are full. I also like Aqua at Venetian. A bit pricey, make reservations but also be prepared to wait. I liked it and the seafood was really good. It's very chic and has a cool water vibe.
