Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
The hurricane officially ended just over 24 hours ago and I cannot believe the amount of ******ng I am hearing from people about not having electricity!!! On FB and in "real" life....its really crazy. There are 900,000 people out, clearly its going to take a while! I have no power since 5:30pm on Mon. I have accepted that everything in the fridge is garbage and within another few days the freezer will be garbage too. There are three massive tress being held up by wires and a electrical pole is down - all in front of my apartment complex. I called to report that a while ago and the women actually thanked me for not screaming at her - give it a rest people!!! Have some friggen patience and be happy your house is still standing!!!
Vent over
Just want to clarify - I am also giving LIPA A LOT of credit and they are definitely do the best they can under the catastrophic circumstances- commenting on the people who are complaining about "how long this is taking"

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
You know what? I feel like LIPA is doing a GREAT job this time around. So many people at my job are emailing in to report they have power restored. We were FULLY expecting to be out a week- at least. When we got it back in less than 24 hours I was shocked and amazed. And very grateful!

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
I am for them right now. They got many of the major intersections back up, around me, yesterday. Our house was back on today. This is a HUGE undertaking. They are being a bit more transparent with the plans this time around. Hopefullly, they keep up te progress.
After driving around surveying some of the damage yesterday, i vowed to not complain about power loss. Many people lost everything.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
I know from last time how hard it is to be without power but give LIPA a break! Of course they can't fully restore it all at once. Even before the storm hit they were saying to expect to be without power for up to a week. It does seem that they're doing a great job at getting it up quickly too.

I agree with you. People need to realize that others lost their homes...lives were lost because of this storm...losing power is NOT the worst thing that could've happened by any stretch of the imagination.

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
People need a reason to ***** and moan and while I'd like to think if they took a step back and really thought about it they'd see that in the scheme of things they've got it good because they're not homeless and have not lost everything it's still sometimes difficult to see the forest through the trees.
That said, when the CEO was interviewed the other day and said "the storm exceeded their expectations" I was a little like, "really?!" the news has been reporting this is going to be the "Storm of the Century" for the last WEEK. How on EARTH could it have exceeded your expectations?
Their job is to be prepared for this stuff. They provide an ESSENTIAL service and we pay A LOT of money for it. The fact that they basically admitted to not being prepared did irritate me.
But I agree, the guys OUT IN THE FIELD are KICKING ASS and doing a great job. My hat is off to them! Stay safe!!!

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
I haven't heard any complaining yet but I agree, they are doing what they can.
I can't complain though, they restored my power within 2 hours of losing it on Monday.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
I have no power at home. The only thing I can rely for news from the outside world is my radio.
I am not complaining, rather, my comment is this:
All we have is the radio. I have not heard one update from LIPA. Just that 90% of Long Island is out. I do not blame them, nor think I should have my power back tomorrow.
All I would like is to hear SOMETHING about whats going on as far as repair. Where are they? Still assesing? Is it worse than they thought? Are they working on priority right now (hospitals?). I just feel there is a lack of information. Thats all.
I do not feel they are doing a bad job at all. I just wish there woild be a little more communication.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
If people did have power, they would have the TV on and see constant images of some of the destruction in NJ and Breezy Point and then realize they should not be complaining about a thing!

If you or anyone would like info, just post if you can and I'm sure somoene with power will be able to give you some info.
From Lipower.org:
Welcome to the Storm Center
Storm Progress: October 31, 2012 - 10:00AM
It’s just a short time since the worst of Hurricane Sandy, and the monumental task of debris removal and damage assessment is well underway. Significant efforts are also underway to repair the “backbone” of the electric system, which includes the high-voltage power lines and the substations that distribute power to local communities. These parts of the electric system may not be near your home, which is why you may not see a LIPA truck on your street. Additionally, many of our employees who survey damage use their personal vehicles.
It is extremely important that we make sure hospitals, other critical facilities, and emergency services are up and running. Significant progress has been made and we will continue to focus our efforts on these facilities.
Restoration crews are facing hazardous conditions. Communities that are inaccessible to their own residents are to us as well. Blocked roadways and flood waters have added difficulty to the restoration process. We are working as hard as we can to restore power, while also ensuring the safety of our workforce.
A workforce of more than 5,000 strong is working around the clock and will continue to do so until everybody has power. An effort of this magnitude requires assistance from other companies off Long Island. We brought crews here before the storm and more are arriving every day.
Unfortunately, it’s a challenge to gain access to additional assistance because enormity of Sandy has strained the resources of utilities in its path. We will keep you updated as additional information becomes available.
Safety should still be your highest priority. Assume any downed wire is a live electric wire. Stay away from it and report it to LIPA immediately, anytime at 1-800-490-0075.
Electric Outage Details Affected Customers: 849,515 Active Outages: 4,571 Last Update: Oct 31, 12:18 PM

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
DH and I were talking about this all weekend - its crazy to think that LIPA will be able to get power back up and running right away. I'm sure they are doing the best they can - no one, including the LIPA workers, wants to deal with this any longer than they have to. I'm sure the LIPA workers are working crazy hours and are not able to be home to take care of their own stuff. If we see them, we will offer them coffee or water (coffee if we can get it from the 7-11 around the corner from our house), and wish them the best in this difficult situation. Complaining about it just makes it worse for everyone.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
I was SO happy to see LIPA in my town earlier that I stopped the car and my kids and I yelled out THANK YOU to the guys on the road and beeped our horns at them...they smiled and waved back...I was told yesterday 7-10 days for power to be restored so to see these trucks within 10 miles of my home made me hopeful.

It's def. frustrating to be without power, but LIPA is doing the best that they can and I think they are doing an amazing job. Hopefully they can have everyone up and running as soon as possible... its going to take some time

Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
My favorite are the people who have power complaining that they don't have cable. Even better are the people asking my dh (engineer for Cablevision) when their cable will be back on, yet they don't have power. Currently we don't have power and I'm not going to lie and say I'm hap put about it, but it could be so much worse. I am so grateful that we are only missing power. I am so thankful to be safe with no major damage to our house.

My DH and I both work for Cable (he's a trainer, I'm in billing operations). It is amazing that people think just because their power comes back that TV will come back on at the same time. In some cases it does but if there are lines down, we have to wait for LIPA to do their job and then our guys can do theirs.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
I think it was pretty incredible what LIPA was able to accomplish just 8 hours into the work day yesterday, judging by how many of my friends/family got their power back and traffic lights that are up and running again and stores that were able to open today.
People are just cold and frustrated. I get it.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
The guys in the field have a tough job and I have no complaints there - they are doing a commendable job under tough circumstances.
What I do have complaints about is LIPA communication. Updates on the radio since yesterday morning have been "we're assessing the situation" and it makes it sound like they haven't fully deployed crews. Clearly not the case since some power is coming back but given the situation with Irene where crews were standing around waiting to be told what to do while they continually "assessed the situation", it's frustrating to hear over and over again. Even the commentators on the radio were questioning how long they were going to assess and when they'd get to work.
LIPA also keeps telling you to go to their website to see the progress. What I see are areas that I know there is no power, yet it's not showing on the map. I see my MIL's large complex and DH's office in Coram, a friend's house in Holbrook, my offices in Bayport - I know they've been reported yet I don't see any markers at all.
Not an easy job for LIPA, and we prepared to be without for several days, but if they are giving out info, don't give us two days of "we're trying to figure out what to do" and make sure if you direct us to online info it's accurate and informative.

Re: Vent - People's attitudes toward LIPA
Disclaimer: I really want my power back and every night I go to sleep hoping to wake up to electricity.
But call me crazy...I'm not entirely hating this. I'm reading with kids a ton, we have created an entire Lego village and I might be losing weight. DH was going to try to get a generator but why bother. Even if it takes 3 weeks, we'll get by.
I will say that I wasn't really that prepared. We have underground wires and never lose power. In the neighborhood next mine there are tons of down trees and wires...so I know it will be a while. I think they turned our grid off so there wouldn't be live wires.
It makes me want to do my daily runs to see the progress! Lol
