Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
I'm just annoyed that Bloomberg closed the NYC schools- so DD's daycare is closed. We really have no one to watch her, so I have to take a day off.
And if it snowed, it be one thing.
But there is barely an inch on the ground. I know its "supposed" to get bad later, but we were also "supposed" to get 18 inches last night. And if it is really bad tomorrow, and the schools are closed again, then I'll have to be home again.
Now I have to make up my hours at work- and I look like a wimp for not coming into work since I'm the one closest to the office.
Damn Bloomburg.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
The weather reports were not saying 18 inches over night, they have been saying this storm could dump 18 inches by the time it's over. What I saw said 2-3 inches by morning (which is what we have now).
IMO, I think it was smart of him to close the schools. Nobody should be out on the roads right now if not absolutely necessary. I'm in Northern Jersey and it's pretty bad here right now.
I'm sorry you have to take a day off, but I'd rather people be safe then have to trek into work in dangerous road conditions.

I don't think they'll think you are a wimp - you have a valid reason not to come in. Enjoy the time, pretend you don't have to make up the work later. ;o)

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Yeah, they were saying it was not going to be bad in the morning. Bloomberg even said that everyone would get to school fine but it would be extremely dangerous getting them home. Not worth the risk IMO. I will have to make up a full day of clients as well, but my family is safe so it is all good

I'm with you Shelly. As much as I love being home with my daughter, I've just lost a day of pay from my maternity leave because of the 2 inches of snow on the ground. It kills me.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Looking at the snowflakes the size of my fist coming down right now.....I am extremely glad that he made the call he did. From what all the reports have been saying, getting home will be 10 times worse. The LAST thing I want to do today is put my child in a car and drive in these conditions. It's just not worth the risk. Enjoy the day with your LO

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
As a NYC teacher its about time this man used his head! When I have to go into work on a snow day that means my children have to be dropped off at daycare at 6:30 am. I do not like/want to drive my 2 and 4 year old in conditions like this nevermind when it is 4:45pm and I have to pick them up and we would be in blizzard like conditions by then. I love in the PAST when that MAN stands there on all the newschannels telling people how treacherous it is and how only emergency vehicles should be on the road, BUT OH YEAH NYC schools are open.......HE did the right thing for once!!! It's safer for everyone

Finally, he made a smart decision. Not only is it dangerous to have all the kids traveling to and from school, but the teachers, many of whom don't live in the 5 boroughs, also would have had to make the very dangerous commute.

The roads are really bad right now. It is a mix of the light and heavy snow and it is making the roads bad.
I am getting really worried about power outages.

DS's daycare is also closed, but I wasn't planning on bringing him anyway. They say it's going to get worse through the day. I did bring my laptop home b/c I have the option to work from home (once in a while).
Stay warm and safe and enjoy the day with DD

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
I'm sorry but as a NYC Teacher I am so glad he shut down the schools. With the threat of the LIRR suspending service I would have been STUCK in the city with nobody to pick my DD up at daycare on Long Island. Never mind the fact that when school lets out today it is supposed to be Blizzard conditions. I don't think it would be right to have 1000's of children walking home in that. If your job thinks you're a wimp than that's their problem considering there is nothing you can do about daycare closing.

I'm sorry you are annoyed, but honestly I can't for the life of me figure out what weather report you were watching. For the last three days every single weather report I heard said snow would start falling after midnight leaving up to 3 inches max on the ground by the morning commute (this morning), with snow continuing to fall throughout the day, and overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with totals up to 24 inches in some spots. These reports also said the worst driving conditions would be after noon today.
My DH had to drive to work today b/c his office didn't have the foresight to close because there is "barely an inch on the ground" and later today he'll be risking life and limb to come home when once again the forecasters are right.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
The reason is for the commute back home.
The storm will hit hard this afternoon.
Even LIRR is increasing their trains during 1-4pm for early dismissals.
You probably would have had to leave work anyway to pick up your DC for early closing.

Another NYC teacher here. While it might not have been that bad this morning, it most likely will be bad later. So that would have been a nightmare coming home. It's not worth people being on the roads.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Honestly, I couldn't believe he did it...I went to NYC in Queens and they NEVER closed...which is frustrating b/c in Queens (and other boroughs) the snow is always different than in the city usually....
We have plenty of snow in suffolk right now....it stinks if you guys don't yet...

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
I think that Bloomberg made the right decision. He also made the decision early so that parents could plan for childcare. That was a very responsible thing to do. For a change, people thought ahead of the safety of the students and teachers throughout the day.

Not much overnight into Wed morning. Still not too much to round out the morning. Picking up in the early afternoon to LOTS in the later afternoon into early evening. (Again, this is for NYC and LI)
I will personally kick the first person that complains the snow isn't here yet when they wake up in the morning. Or if they say "major storm?!?!? All I got was two inches overnight."
It is supposed to hit in about 12 hours. (Yes, lunch time for those of you that get the glorious opportunity to work an 8-5 job) It is really supposed to get nasty for the night commute.
So, no comments for 12 hours. Zip it!!!
Put on your pasties and enjoy the next 12 hours.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Those who are complaining- what would you be complaining about at the end of the work day when driving conditions are treacherous? Be happy you don't have to risk you or your childrens' lives trying to get around in this.
Such a silly thing to get up in arms about. Enjoy your snow day home with your kids.

Agreed- I was pleasantly surprised because they are always so resistant to closing, and it's usually because of the child care issue that would be posed for parents. Last year they made the decision SO late and it caused problems for parents and teachers, some who'd already left for work. I would have had to take the day- even though my DD's day care was open, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to get a train home later. And in the 13 years I have taught in NYC, there has never been an early dismissal, ever.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
So many city teachers have long commutes. This was the right call for them, their safety and their families. No one should have to risk their life to save someone some inconvenience.
