I think that Bloomberg made the right decision. He also made the decision early so that parents could plan for childcare. That was a very responsible thing to do. For a change, people thought ahead of the safety of the students and teachers throughout the day.
ITA! It's much safer to keep people home! I wouldn't want my DC to have to travel in such bad conditions!

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Another DOE NYC teacher here and it was the right call to make! Our school is lucky because most of our teachers live pretty close to school! Our principal tries to hire local teachers..but when dealing with little ones who get bussed around, I would hate if something happened to them! Then everyone would be blaming the mayor!
What many people need to do is come up with a super back up plan! Our daycare was closed as well and people were scrambling for last minute arrangements. Since I am a teacher, I offered to take 2 little ones today so parents could work.
But not for nothing, my dh works in the financial district and his company is closed today!

Those who are complaining- what would you be complaining about at the end of the work day when driving conditions are treacherous? Be happy you don't have to risk you or your childrens' lives trying to get around in this.
Such a silly thing to get up in arms about. Enjoy your snow day home with your kids.
ITA!
Its the getting home later that is concerning! Why risk you and your child (ren) in dangerous conditions?

Not a city teacher, but it made perfect sense to me. Close the schools a day in advance and daycare accommodations can be made earlier.

My law firm in midtown is having a "virtual office" (work at home day) because of the weather.

be thankful you can make up the hours. my DH was "forced" to go into work today. he went to a manhattan hotel last night to make sure he would make the morning meeting.
who knows how he will get home today. i just hope the power stays on in jersey or i'll be left home alone another night with 2 kiddos and a flooded basement
i actually think this was a good call, but it could have very easily gone the other way like saturday!

This isn't true. It was forecasted we wouldn't get much, if anything, on Saturday. It was an all or nothing storm.
This storm is totally different, there was no chance we would have gotten nothing.
I don't understand why anyone would vent about schools closing because for the safety of children.

i really could not agree more. for us in NJ it has gone from eh to BAD within 20 minutes. Our report changed from winter storm warning to BLIZZARD warning and it's incredibly windy out there. i would HATE to think that my day care workers would've had to come in today and risk their OWN lives to watch my child. They have families too...

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
I think Bloomberg handled this perfectly. He closed schools so early in advance that people had plenty of time to find alternative arrangements. It isn't only about the students, it is also about the staff. I am sure many of the staff of NYC schools don't live in the city. I am looking out the window right now and it is blizzard like conditions - imagine having to go home in this. I work for the court system and the courts are closed, which they rarely are. If he didn't close the schools, people would be screaming. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Crasher here.. but I am a NYC school teacher and live about 40 mins from my school WITHOUT traffic....... I definitely would have had to call in sick today if they stayed open!
Last year there were a few days I went in despite the weather and came pretty close to swerving into other cars!!
Also, I have students who walk a couple of miles to school everyday... in all types of weather. I wouldn't want them walking in this!
I'm VERY thankful that he closed and appalled that anyone would think otherwise because it might be inconvenient!
Safety is most important!!!!!!!

Even DH's office made the call yesterday afternoon to close today. It's a nationwide retail company and they are ALL ABOUT the bottom line.
Kids' and teachers' safety were at stake. He made the right call.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Id never feel safe putting my child on a school bus today. I dont care what anyone says, school buses can only handle so much. They are not ATV's and they are not SUVs. I'd suck it up and deal with losing a sick day. I may even do that tomorrow. Oh well!
I am not going to be of any use to any student in the future if my car is flipped over on the JRP.

As a NYC teacher its about time this man used his head! When I have to go into work on a snow day that means my children have to be dropped off at daycare at 6:30 am. I do not like/want to drive my 2 and 4 year old in conditions like this nevermind when it is 4:45pm and I have to pick them up and we would be in blizzard like conditions by then. I love in the PAST when that MAN stands there on all the newschannels telling people how treacherous it is and how only emergency vehicles should be on the road, BUT OH YEAH NYC schools are open.......HE did the right thing for once!!! It's safer for everyone
I'm not a teacher but I agree with this is about time they plan ahead and closing the schools was the right thing to do

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
I think that Bloomberg made the right decision by closing the schools not only for the safety of the kids but the teachers & administrators that need to travel to their place of work. They said the roads would not be bad in the morning but the evening commute is where they are worried. Quite honestly, DH works in NYC & stayed home just bc he knew the commute would be a nightmare & the roads are just not worth being on at this point in time. I am sorry you had to loose a day of pay to stay home but it was the right decision by everyone to close the schools

The weather reports were not saying 18 inches over night, they have been saying this storm could dump 18 inches by the time it's over. What I saw said 2-3 inches by morning (which is what we have now).
IMO, I think it was smart of him to close the schools. Nobody should be out on the roads right now if not absolutely necessary. I'm in Northern Jersey and it's pretty bad here right now.
I'm sorry you have to take a day off, but I'd rather people be safe then have to trek into work in dangerous road conditions.

I'm just annoyed that Bloomberg closed the NYC schools- so DD's daycare is closed. We really have no one to watch her, so I have to take a day off.
And if it snowed, it be one thing.
But there is barely an inch on the ground. I know its "supposed" to get bad later, but we were also "supposed" to get 18 inches last night. And if it is really bad tomorrow, and the schools are closed again, then I'll have to be home again.
Now I have to make up my hours at work- and I look like a wimp for not coming into work since I'm the one closest to the office.
Damn Bloomburg.
I worked in the NYC schools as a teacher and I can tell you, after years of them NEVER closing and forcing us teachers to drive in under unsafe conditions I am SO excited to hear they FINALLY gave a snow day. And good thing they did...........it's AWFUL out and it would've been dangerous for anyone to try and commute today.
And not for anything, they weren't predicting 18" of snow last night. They said the snow would start late Tuesday night and continue through Thursday morning and so far they were right. The city schools made a good call for once and so what if you have to take a snow day..........with up to 18" of snow expected I am sure your job will understand.

Really? Do you still feel this way? Because all of the weather reports are saying that the snow we've gotten now isn't even the start of the storm. And I have a few inches at my house right now. I always find it selfish when people get annoyed at school closings because it inconveniences them (not that I'm calling you selfish). I think safety is more important than a few missed hours at work. Clearly, Bloomberg made the right call here.

Re: Vent about Bloomberg closing the NYC schools
Maybe the OP was just venting? I mean, sheesh. I don't know her to be an insensitive person who doesn't care about anyone's safety. She's allowed to be annoyed by schools closing. Do I agree with everyone else that schools needed to be closed for the safety of the children and the teachers? Of course, but I also understand when it is an inconvenience for people. You can be annoyed about it, it doesn't mean you don't care about other people. That's all I'm saying, ya know?

I understand that you are annoyed but at the same time would you want your child on a bus traveling in the weather that we are having RIGHT NOW. That is what I would think of. It is a lot safer to have your kids home right now and not be driving... I think the decision was a smart and safe one!

Finally, he made a smart decision. Not only is it dangerous to have all the kids traveling to and from school, but the teachers, many of whom don't live in the 5 boroughs, also would have had to make the very dangerous commute.
I agree. We have to look at the whole picture. It may not have been bad early, but many kids take the bus home and it's dangerous!! And the teachers have to be given some consideration as well! I'm so glad he made the right decision!
