Re: very different mom talk from the usual my kid is so advanced...what do you think?
All my gay friends and family tell me they knew as young children.
I can see in my own DD that she is straight. She's 2. How? Because she gets all googly around little boys that are cute. She gets flirty, blushes and everything. She can verbalize it when she thinks a boy is cute.
Being gay or straight isn't just about sex, just like it's not a choice, it's about love and companionship as well.

I didn't read ANY responses. Here's my .02.. I think you DEFINITELY can know that young. I know for a fact. Now, everyone is different but here is my experience....
When my BFF and I were in our graduating year (1993) her 2 sisters were both pg and due with in only weeks of one another.
One sister had a girl. We'll call her "Mikayla and the other sister had a boy, we'll call him "Sean." When Sean was 1 years old he wanted Mikayla's bows in his hair. At 2 years old he was playing with all of her toys more than his. We all joked about it but thought NOTHING of it. At 3 he told Santa he wanted to be a girl. Ok now we're all like It just never ended.
We all said we shalll see when the day comes. By the time he was 10 he loved Britney Spears and all of his BFF's were girls.
At 14 he even dated some girls had a girlfriend or 2. Did he still seem a little gay at 14? Yes but it wasn't confirmed yet.
At 16, he was caught looking at gay porn. How embarrassing for his mom to see and to confront him. Mind you, his mother truly suspected this so she was not shocked but emotional b/c the day had come. She was really amazing how she confronted him. His answer was...I like girls...but they are so annying....I thought I'd see what guys are like. that was his answer. He is gay! He is only 16. I am sure (he is SUPER close with his mom, grandparents and aunts) that he will confirm it. It's only a matter of time.
that is my experience. I've know this kid since he was in his mama's belly. He showed signs since he was a year old. His mother knew it but the only difference is that she would never say he is as gay as Issac Mizrahi.
ETA: That was my living proof that you are born that way!

IDK, Gay is a sexual preference, not an identity ... right?
I would not call it a "preference". Gay people are born gay. Not by preference! Well said Sophie!!!
I totally think it's possible. I met a girl when she was little who totally looked, dressed, and acted like a boy from day 1.... It was no shocker when her mom told us she came out (at age 13 or 14!!!)
There is more to being gay than who you sleep with....

Only a mother can make that decision about HER child...
I absolutely think a mother can tell at that age.... she may be wrong, she may be DEAD ON... but its her son, and her intuition.... KWIM?
my brother used to tease me about my son when he was a toddler b/c I was a single mom... I'm VERY artistic... have a lot of gay friends... he would tease me that my son was *fruity* truth is... ALL TODDLER BOYS are a little *fruity.* and I reminded him of that... yes- he was being raised by an artsy single mom... but my intuition was that he was the way he was BECAUSE of that... I absolutely think mothers of homosexual children have that feeling... I didn't have *that* feeling, you know?

I'm sure she knows her son well enough to say that. You are born gay, just like you are born heterosexual, so if you know it one way, why can't you know it the other about your child? Good for her for being so supportive of him!
