my ped recommended a suppository if she was really uncomfortable....

she is FF, originally on enfamil newborn, switched to goodstart which didn't help, then gentlease...

we also use mylicon daily

Re: Very gassy newborn....

DS was a very gassy baby too. He didn't have any sensitives and we were told its normal. I BF during the day and gave a bottle of formula at night, or sometimes if he was hungry and I was just too tired or too sore to BF.

We tried everything, he's our list. It seemed to peak around 8 weeks, and he finally grew out of it by 12 weeks.

Here's my list, I share all the time:

1. Change the bottle, some bottles are gassier than others, chose one that he latches on to well. If your BF, consider that your latch isn't perfect and allowing baby to gulp air.

2. Warm bottles, always warm the bottle, at least to body temperature. If you put it on your wrist it shouldn't feel hot or cold to you.

3. Mylicon drops in the bottle. Not after, not before, But IN the bottle.

4. A pro-biotic, like BioGaia, takes 1-2 weeks to show any results, but I think it helped tons.

5. Baby Yoga - and other "exercises" and belly rubs, but we love the Yoga routine! DS still thinks its a great game (even at 16m) the Baby Yoga routine we follow

6. Our miracle potion: chamomile and fennel tea with brown sugar, always given warm. My mother suggested warm water, but that wasn't enough. Our ped said chamomile, that wasn't enough. Our favorite ped nurse said a little brown sugar in water is the safest pain reliever, yes, but it didn't do anything for gas. Our old Italian neighbor said fennel, that alone wasn't enough. But them combined, this potion always got him to poop if he was constipated, and always calmed him down. We take this with us to doctors appointments and if DS gets crazy after shots we are prepared with this!
You'll want to talk to your ped about giving it, but my ped said its fine and was happy we found the magic ingredients that worked for us.

7. Gripe Water, a quick, short term pacifier. Instantly he'd calm down and reassert his cries. I just squirt some in his mouth. He loves it. IMO its just candy, taste it! It taught me that a baby can be gassy and still be calm and sleep. It has some baking soda in it that is supposed to neutralize gas, and some have fennel, ginger and chamomile, depending on the brand. It also cures hiccups for us.

8. Lay them on their left side after meals. My ped suggested this and this is how they put him to sleep in the hospital. DS used to only sleep this way! After about week 2, we started swaddling religiously and he learned to sleep on his back.

9. When he gets too fussy, I swaddle, and I swaddle tight! The pressure on the tummy really helps. A warm towel, or warm belt on their tummy, some pressure there, helps a a lot. But swaddle with their legs loose, they need to kick to get that lower gas out! Thats ticky to do, and some babies might not like it, but DS needed to be able to kick while having his tummy held tight.

10. They say it will take a few days before you'll notice if a formula is better than another. We tried Similac Sensitive, Enfamil Gentlease, Gerber Good Start Gentle. Hands down Good Start was the best one for us. DS actually was gassier on Similac Sensitive than on regular Similac that we got free from hospital.

11. Invest in Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. This saved our lives. You can watch clips of it on YouTube. When DS was just unreasonable, I would hand him to DH, run to the DVD watch it again, come back and do the technique. We'd be calm happy family again.
Heres is the method in action

"There is no medical harm in the stool staying in the body for a long time, and the frequency of your baby's bowel movements does not really define true constipation. True constipation occurs when the baby's stools cause significant difficulty and discomfort when being passed, because they are very dense and hard. This definition excludes the baby who has soft, easy-to-pass stools once a week, even if he seems to strain a lot in the process.'

Re: Very gassy newborn....

We had the issue at the start as well. It got to the point we called the Ped and stated we need help. He recommended adding 1/2 oz of prune juice to her bottles and within a day, we noticed a difference! She was pooping nearly every day and sometimes 2x/day and she seemed content. There are still times she is gassy and fussy and we give her mylicon and usually the next day, she will have a huge poop and feel so much better!

Good luck!!!

I could've written this word for word! I just got back from the pediatrician and it turns out my DD has a milk protein allergy and is now on a prescription formula.

Maybe you should make another appt and go back. DD was not sleeping and constantly screaming...not crying but screaming.

Maybe look into it more
