Visa/Amex Gift Cards

A fellow teacher is getting married. Colleagues usually throw a shower at school and get things off the registry. However, she received everything off her registry at her family shower. I thought we could pool the money for those Visa or Amex gift cards so that she could use them on her honeymoon.

Does anyone know where I can get them? What are the fees associated with them? and can they be used abroad?

TIA!

I think most banks have them. This should give you more info: https://www311.americanexpress.com/BOLWeb/bolfeOrder.do?request_type=orderProduct&promotion=ACP&program=ACPBUS&selleracctnbr=6430098999I&extlink=NEBGOGBr&source=search_ne&ne_ppc_id=839&ne_key_id=14601815&ne_sadid=11116703212&gclid=COzJk-fQprACFYhM4AodJRibZw

I've found them very difficult to use while traveling. Hotels and restaurants often refuse to take them. If you know what hotel brand they're going to use, you could consider a gift card from the brand (Marriott, Hilton, etc.).

You can get the AMEX gcs at the supermarket, cvs, etc... They're around $5. I like them better than the visa gcs.

Do people even use traveler's cheques anymore?
maybe that could be an option?

Do you know where she's going on her HM? Maybe you can arrange for a couple's massage or an excursion. GCs are not always easy to use to pay resort expenses

Re: Visa/Amex Gift Cards

I have got them many times before for travel. They work great as long as you call the number before hand on the card. (especially if leaving the country) Some banks have them for free with no charge. I go to a credit union and they have them free of charge. I also believe that TD bank has them free of charge for there members. They also can use them for anything at home. I always loved getting them.

I always think they're a pain to use, even in the US. Is it credit, is it debit, whats the PIN, what happens if there is leftover, does the merchant allow split payments, blah blah blah. Plus they charge you for them.

Just give cash or a check. I don't look at cash or a check and think "wow, no effort went into this, I wish they wasted 5 more dollars and went and got a fake credit card that is a pain to use..."

i think they are a bit difficult to even use in the US let alone while traveling. I agree with the previous poster that mentioned paying for a couples massage, or an excursion on their trip.

Re: Visa/Amex Gift Cards

If the intent is for her to use abroad, I would just pool the money and write a check.

If anyone has an account at TD bank, you can get Visa GCs there free of charge - but the minimum denomination is $25, I think. Check with your bank, too. For the account I have, I can get Visa GCs at Chase free of charge.

Just give cash, those are too much of a hassle to use out of the country

I agree.... I would collect the money and get a bank check or a money order.
