A few people mentioned hand sanitizer, but will that really do anything, since the flu is caused by a virus & not bacteria?

Almost too good, that's why they can mutate if they build up a resistance to them. Also, Lysol works great to dry out a virus, without mutating it like alcohol can do.
But I still will be using my hand sanitizer even more than I did before.

As crazy as it may seem the reason young healthy people are being sickened and dying is from an overreaction in the body. The body with strong immune system is going to attack the virus and go into hyper mode which fills the lungs and the person can't breathe. Would almost make sense to wear yourself down and weaken your immune system before going someplace super public like Disney
!
Can someone please explain to me what this means? I haven't read anything about the Flu here in the US being worse than any other flu or that anyone has died Is this the reaction people are having here? I'm confused?

This is happening in Mexico, they arent sure why it hasn't happened here yet or if it ever will. But being that the virus is in it's early stages here (and it's structurally the same virus that is here), they don't know if it will become stronger/worse and become like Mexico, or die out and weaken....
So considering the way it is harming healthy young adults in Mexico, they are being super cautious here in case it starts hitting people/healthy people esp, hard here.

A few people mentioned hand sanitizer, but will that really do anything, since the flu is caused by a virus & not bacteria? Great question! Yes, hand sanitizers work against the flu virus (at least alcohol-based ones like Purell. I'm not sure about "natural" ones like CleanWell.) There is no evidence that viruses can become resistant to them.

So is it only bacteria that become resistant and mutate?

Hand sanitizers are by and large alcohol based, NOT anti-bacterial. Viruses and bacteria do not become immune to them or mutate to become resistant to them.
The problem with antibacterial products is that they selectively kill weaker bacteria, leaving the "strong" or more resistant strains of bacteria to survive and multiply.

Re: Wanted your thoughts re: Swine Flu. UPDATE: First Case just hit Walt Disney in Orlando--That's where I am going!
Expert on flu's spread says new strain here to stay
SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- Predicting the path of a swine flu outbreak is next to impossible, public health officials say. But Dr. Ira Longini has spent more than three decades trying to do just that.
And Longini says the apparent new strain of swine flu appears to be here to stay. "We are probably going to have to live with this virus for some time," he told CNN.
Longini specializes in the mathematical and statistical theory of epidemics. He works at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute at the Hutchinson Research Center in Seattle, Washington.
The researcher studies simulations of hypothetical influenzas and how they would spread across the United States. For the moment, he said, there is not enough information about the swine flu that has sickened hundreds in Mexico and about 50 people in the United States to accurately forecast how the disease will travel.
But Longini's simulations of a fictional killer flu that were ordered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show the importance of steps health officials can take to prevent further spread of the virus. These measures include "social distancing," or encouraging those sickened with the flu to stay home or seek medical treatment; closing places where groups of people gather; and making anti-flu medications available to large portions of the population.
In the simulations, Longini said, these forms of containment reduce the sickness by nearly two-thirds.
"The name of the game is to slow transmission until a well-matched vaccine can be made and distributed. I am fairly optimistic we can do that," he said. Watch how computer models simulate an outbreak's spread »
So far, Longini said, it appears that everyone sickened by swine flu in the United States contracted the disease while traveling in Mexico, the apparent epicenter of the outbreak.
But he cautioned: "That could change very fast. Obviously people in these communities could also get on airplanes and go other places or get on buses or cars or trucks and move around. The picture may change very rapidly. Basically, influenza is going to go where people go."
"It is too soon for us to say what the spectrum is," Dr. Richard Besser, the acting director of the CDC, said Monday on Larry King Live. "We are going to see cases in this country that are more severe, individuals who are hospitalized, and I would not be surprised if we see deaths in this country."
Longini said health officials are doing everything they can to mitigate how widely the swine flu spreads in the United States. Even if authorities examined everyone entering the country, Longini said, it would not solve the problem.
"Through simulations and mathematical work we've shown that travel restrictions -- although potentially useful in slowing spread [of swine flu] -- they are not going to stop it," Longini said. "We can screen airline passengers, but there all those asymptomatic or incubating people we would miss. So you really have to deal with these outbreaks locally, everywhere they are occurring."
Longini said he hopes that as more data come in about the outbreak, it will help to answer questions researchers have about why the swine flu appears more deadly in the Mexico cases than the ones in the United States. Researchers also hope to find out why such a large percentage of fatalities in Mexico are young people whose healthy immune systems usually protect them from the flu.
But there is good news, Longini said, at least temporarily, for populations in certain areas. In North America and Europe, summer will soon begin, ending the traditional flu season. Even outbreaks such as swine flu tend to follow standard flu season patterns, he said.
Other parts of the world may not be so lucky.
"Timing is terrible for people in the Southern Hemisphere -- places like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, parts of South America, "Longini said. "They are just coming into their flu season."

So is it only bacteria that become resistant and mutate? No, viruses can too. But in the context of alcohol-based sanitizers, alcohol kills so quickly that germs (both viruses AND bacteria) don't even have a chance to make mutations.

This is truly terrifying. It also seems like if the flu does become more virulent, those who get it now while it's still pretty weak are going to be the lucky ones. I read that that's what happened in 1918.
The idea of the government having to screen or quarantine people also scares me.

I heard on the news that the mask does little to protect you. The doctor said basically there is no reason to wear it.

Yes the only thing a surgical mask will do is give you some nice indentations on your face.
You would need a respirator mask like the N95 to provide protection against airborne viruses (the swine flu is not airborne as of yet) You would also need to be specially fitted for it in order for it to be effective.

I am a worrier....and I personally could NOT get on a plane without wearing one. same here. The problem for us is that I was planning a 12 hr flight to Europe with DD , so I guess that's not happening any time soon. If I didn't have DD I wouldn't care ,but I am kinda scared of this whole thing, and I don't scare easy

Can you please cite something to support this because it makes NO sense to me. Children are no healthier than adults and their immune systems are weaker, NOT stronger.
What you've described is NOT the normal reason people get sick and/or die from the flu. The vast majority of people who die from the flu are those with underdeveloped or weakened immune systems -- the elderly, children, and people suffering from other diseases / conditions that weaken the immune system, not those with healty immune systems. I'm not saying it CAN'T happen, but it is not the norm. Telling people they're better off with a weakened immune system is not only untrue, but dangerous. A healthy immune system is the best first line of defense in fighting off any virus.

I'm glad you posted this. I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to post anything until I did some research on my own. I feel like there is a lot of misinformation out there and making a statement like this- without scientific or medical evidence to back it up is dangerous... I hope that everyone gets the information they need from reliable sources- not rumors...

But that's what makes this virus different supposedly. The healthier you are, the stronger the immune response. The strong immune response is leading to fluid building up in the lungs, thus causing death.
That's the difference and why she was saying what she did. This virus is different in that regard and that's why the overwhelming concern.
In Mexico, healthy adults 20-40 were the largest age group dying. So that was her point in that statement.

And I am asking for a cite that explains that in greater detail. I have a difficult time understanding why the virus would respond to antivirals, but it's really a hyperactive immune response that is causing death. I'm trying to learn what is going on here...
ETA - I saw your Q&A thread... I think that may explain it. Thanks.

Okay, I think there needs to be a distinction made here. A "new" virus that causes an overreaction of someone's immune system (which can lead to it being more deadly) does not mean that weaker immune systems are better equipped to deal with the virus. A weak immune system would have trouble fighting any virus, especially a new one with no known immunity in humans. Just because it won't go into hyper drive like a healthy immune system *might* does not mean that you are better off with a weak immune system.
