Was breastfeeding harder a second time around?

The first time I exclusively pumped, but I don't even remember the contractions. This time they were so bad that they were worse than my c section recovery pain! My milk came in on day 4 both times.
Good luck.

I have heard more than once that the 'afterpains' or stomach contractions are far more painful the second time. Motrin is your friend!

Yes the cramping is way worse, but I found the whole process much easier (ie. latching, nipple cracks, etc.).

The cramping gets worse with each child. I actually took pain meds when I had #3.

Looking back, #1 was tongue tied and I didn't know it so that is why he couldn't latch. #2 and #3 was so easy to BF. I was much more relaxed because I knew what to expect.

If your DC is having trouble latching I would take a quick look to see if he is tongue tied. if he is, you can have it snipped. I didn't find out until DS was almost 4, but his speech is fine so it didn't affect him. He just can not stick his tongue out far.

The cramping was awful, but lasted about 5 days for me. Motrin really helped. As for bfing it was easier. I think the only reason is my son latched right away and refused bottles at all. Plus I was much more confidant in nursing. Hang in there. It will get easier!

Re: Was breastfeeding harder a second time around?

I had my second dc almost 2 weeks ago and the afterpains were HORRIBLE! I honestly felt like they hurt more than my actual labor contractions. They lasted about a week. I don't like taking meds unless I absolutely have to, so I used heating pads which helped a little. As far as breastfeeding goes, I don't necessarily feel like it is harder, just different. My first dc nursed 24/7 and this dc loves to sleep so getting him to nurse more frequently has been a challenge. My milk came in around day 3-4 and I have been feeling pretty uncomfortable because I always feel full. I am hoping with time that my supply will regulate.

Oh please don't tell me this. Now I'm scared about #3. I had such bad cramps after DS #2. I had to ask for pain meds in hospital which I really try to avoid. About a week or so after having DS I remember getting them so bad that I literally couldn't move. I got so scared. I called my MIL in tears and told her to come over immediately. I couldn't move from the bed and was home with two kids. Went to doctor and everything was fine. I didn't have anything like this with my first pregnancy. And yes the pain was comparable to my contractions when I was a good 7-8cm dilated.

I agree cramping was worse second time. With DD#1 I only bf for the first 2 days bc then she went to NICU and I gave up and switched to EP. So far, DD#2 is 1 week today and it was much easier this time to get started but I also didn't have the added stress of the NICU. I gave birth Thursday and my milk came in Saturday morning.

ETA: I was also surprised that it was easier this time bc #2 was a c section and #1 was vaginal.

We had a great start, and then I got mastitis, TWICE Chat Icon that has set me back a bit. I felt with DD1 the start was rocky and then I loved it, but this time I am having a love/hate relationship- good days and bad days!

It was much easier for me the second time around, despite the fact that it was twins. My older son had latch issues, so I EP for 7 weeks until he learned how to latch and started to actually BF. With the twins, they both latched while in the hospital and have been great nursers ever since. I had minimal pain and discomfort.

I found it pain wise to be about the same. Bleeding, painful nips and pain whenever she latched. Also the second time around I felt like it took a bit longer for my milk to come in. That said, mentally it wasn't nearly as bad because I knew how to position her and I knew everything was normal and that eventually we would get where we were going ya know? Best of luck!
