Weaning help
I want to wean Alex around the 6 month mark, which is March 24th. How and when do I get started? This is my schedule right now:
7am - Nurse (about 6-8 ounces) 10am - Pump (about 15 ounces) 3pm - Pump (about 6 ounces) 7pm - Nurse (about 3 ounces) 10pm - Pump (about 6 ounces)
Do I start eliminating some of the sessions or do I decrease the amount? And if I want to totally wean by late March, when do I start?
Thanks!!

A little of both. I would slowly cut down the amount of feedings during the day and slowly cut them out. Actually, I'm just reading and see you are pumping. I would slowly decrease the amount of pumping you do. Say pump half of what you are for 4-5 days and then slowly cut one pumping session out for 4-7 days (depends on your body.)
Usually when weaning, the last one or two feedings weaned are the morning and night one because it's usually the most comforting. I weaned off the night with Gabriella and kept my morning feeding as the last one. Then I slowly nursed her less and less.
I would start now because it will take about roughly a month or a little more, probably.
Does this help? Am I clear? I'm not so sure I am.

Yes, you're clear and that does help, a lot. Thank you!

Ok, good! I meant to also say that your body will tell you if you are weaning to fast and your baby will tell you if you are weaning to slow (not enough BM when nursing and getting frustrated.) The biggest thing is to avoid getting an infection.

Re: Weaning help
Is she already on formula? If not, you should try that first to see how her body reacts before you cut down your supply. Because if there is a formula reactions you do not want to have to build your supply back up from very little. JMO
The pumping sessions will be easier to get rid of then the nursing sessions. Many babies enjoy nursing and enjoy the comfort it brings them. I would start with the pumping sessions..cut them down by 5 minutes every 3-4 days. That is what I did and I was only a pumping mom. It took me 4-5 weeks to stop all of my 5 pumping sessions and there were a few times I needed to just pump a bit more off because my breasts hurt. You do NOT want to get a plugged duct though so make sure that you do it slowly and watch for any sense of a plugged duct. Once you have cut out your pumping then you can begin to wean the nursing sessions..that way you only have to deal with one type of weaning at a time. I wouldn't give yourself a solid "must be done" by date just because the baby may still want to nurse and you may need a bit longer to help her with the weaning process. A pump doesn't cry when you don't it.

We started her on formula last week just for that reason and she took to it VERY well, almost too well In the beginning Alex loved to nurse and comfort nursed all the time, but in the last few weeks she has shown very little interest in nursing and almost seems to prefer the bottle, so I don't think it will be nearly as difficult for her as it will be for me...

Re: Weaning help
Beth - don't feel bad...I started Joseph with formula in his cereal and he loved it. I went then to 1 bottle a day and he ate like a champ. Then I started pumping booby bottles and he was taking them good. Then I went to 2 formula bottles just last week and now as of today he hardly wants any part of the booby bottles! He just wants formula. So, I'm going to try mixing them - 1/2 booby 1/2 formula because I really still want him on the BM. I am still nursing him at night though... let me know how it goes

Thanks Danielle... on another note, these kids need to meet! It sounds to me like they're soul mates with all the similarities they have!

Re: Weaning help
I did a lottle of both. I started cutting down the amount of time feeding her and would suppliment with formula. Then I started cutting out feedings. I took me about a week to have her totally weened. However, she was only 6 weeks old so it may take you alittle long. Good Luck!

I was actually going to FM you and find out if you'd come for that girly weekend ever (then I was going to yell if you hadn't called me! ) Joseph is dying to meet his "preggomate"!

I'm coming, SOON, I promise! I'm just in wedding/bachelorette party/shower hell right now Once it all calms down, I'll be making a few trips to NY and these kids can finally meet the loves of their lives!
