weird question: Do you say "bye" at the end of an answering machine message?

I recently overheard someone leaving a message on a machine and they hung up without saying bye at the end- that just seemed so weird to me because I always end the message by saying bye at the end!

When I questioned the person.. the response was .. "who am I saying bye too, I'm talking to a machine"... which is a good point, but I feel like a good solid "bye" confirms that the message is over!

What does everyone else do?

my mom is the worst! She talks as if someone is there but not paying attention to her She'll say "dinner is at five, ok? let me know if you're coming....call me back...ok...alright bye bye" I am probably turning into her, cuz i do say "bye" at the end too!

Well, with that logic, the person is also asking the machine to call her back.

I am pretty sure I say bye on the messages. Now I'll be paying attention to that...thanks!

I always say Bye. I feel like the message ends too abruptly without saying it.

I just had to do this in my head.. to see if I say bye lol.. but I do!

My DH's grandmother leaves the cutest messages, it sounds like she wrote a letter and then calls and reads it she always ends her messages with Love Grandma

I'll either end with "Bye" or "Talk to you later"

Funny story, DH's great uncle (a cute little old man) called MIL and had this huge long message. I don't remember exactly what it was but he had to have it in 2 phone calls and he called back and started off right where he ended. So it was like:

Message 1:

Blah, blah, blah...when you come over, there is lasagna in the

Message 2:

refrigerator, so don't worry about bringing any food. We have plenty.


It was beyond cute, and really impressive!

For business calls, I definitely do not.

For personal calls, I don't say "bye" but I sometimes say "Hope to talk to you soon" or "hope we can catch up soon" or "talk to you soon". I sometimes throw a "bye" on the end of that.

friends/family i always say "ok, i'll talk to you later, love you, bye"

work stuff i end with "thanks and have a great day"

I can't just hang up, that seems almost "rude". Not rude to the machine but to the person who will eventually be listening to my message. But "Bye" doesn't sound right either. I think I usually just say "OK, I'll talk to you later then" or something like that.

My SIL's answering machine message ends with "Buh-Bye Now".

What drives me crazy is when SIL and I are talking (not an answering machine message) and she doesn't say "bye"- She just hangs up the phone...
On answering machines, I say "bye" to friends and family and "Have a great day" or similar to someone I don't know well or a business call.

I think I always say "bye". My message is typically something like, "hey, so-and-so, it's Jackie. Just calling to say hi. Give me a call back when you get a chance. Talk to you soon. Bye."

I would think if i didnt say either of those it may sound like the machine cut me off or smtg and didnt get my whole message

i always do regardless if the call personal or business related. it's like writing a letter or a research paper; introduction (hi or hello), purpose (reason for call), closing/conclusion (bye or goodbye.

I don't always say bye.. but I always close the conversation by saying something like "ok..talk to you later" or something like that
